ABOUT DELHI

Delhi is a city that bridges two different worlds. Old Delhi, once the capital of Islamic India,
is a labyrinth of narrow lanes lined with crumbling havel is and formidable mosques.
In contrast, the imperial city of New Delhi created by the British Raj is composed of
spacious, tree-lined avenues and imposing government buildings.
15

Delhi has been the seat of power for several rulers and many empires for about a millennium.
Many a times the city was built, destroyed and then rebuilt here. Interestingly, a number of
Delhi's rulers played a dual role, first as destroyers and then as creators.
The city's importance lies not just in its past glory as the seat of empires and magnificent
monuments, but also in the rich and diverse cultures.
No wonder chroniclers of Delhi culture - from Chand Bardai and Amir Khusro to present
days writers - have never been at a loss for topics.
In Delhi, you will discover that the city is sprinkled with dazzling gems: captivating ancient
monuments, fascinating museums and art galleries, architectural wonders, a vivacious
performing-arts scene, fabulous eating places and bustling markets.
Delhi has been the political hub of India.
Every political activity in the country traces its roots here.
This was true even of the mythological era. The Pandavas of the Mahabharata had their
capital at Indraprastha, which is believed to have been geographically located in today's
Delhi.
Redfort (Hindi) is a memorial to Mahatma Gandhi. Originally it was the name of a historic
ghat of Old Delhi (Shah jahanabad) on the banks of Yamuna river. Close to it, and east of
Daryaganj was Raj Ghat Gate of the walled city, opening at Raj Ghat on Yamuna River.
Later the memorial area was also called Raj ghat. It is a black marble platform that marks the
spot of Mahatma Gandhi's cremation, Antyesti (Antim Sanskar) on 31 January 1948, a day
after his assassination. It is left open to the sky while an eternal flame burns perpetually at
one end. It is located on the banks of the river Yamuna in Delhi in India on Ring Road
officially known as Mahatma Gandhi Road. A stone footpath flanked by lawns leads to the
walled enclosure that houses the memorial. All guests must remove their shoes before
entering the Raj Ghatwalls.Today, the Rajghat attracts about 10,000 visitors a day and is a
requisite stop for visiting foreign leaders, regardless of political ideology.

The marvelous Delhi attraction, India Gate is 42 meters tall. It is adorned by beautiful
gardens and fountains. The India Gate is surrounded by a circular road which leads to several
diversions ahead. These diversions further continue into some of the important roads
connecting other places. After the Indian Independence, the India Gate also got the Amar
Jawan Jyoti as another major war memorial. This Amar Jawan Jyoti consists of a shrine made
of black marble. There is a rifle with a soldiers cap that stands erect on the top of the black
marble shrine, to pay homage to the martyrs of Indian Independence and the India Pakistan
war. Ever since its construction, this memorial serves as a structure for paying homage to all
warriors who lost their lives for Indias pride. Along with the shrine, there burns the flame, in
the honor of these immortal warriors at the Amar Jawan Jyoti. Apart from being a remarkable
place of national importance, the India Gate also attracts people with its environment. India
Gate is filled with local people as well as tourists, who come to enjoy the parks and the

Lotus Temple in Delhi: A Remarkable Architecture
Lotus Temple is one of the remarkable architectures of Bahai faith. It is located at Kalkaji in
New Delhi. The temple looks like a lotus flower and is made of marble, cement, dolomite and
sand. The temple has no restrictions for visitors and is open to people from all religions. The
place provides immaculate environment for meditation, peace and wisdom. The Bahai temple
was completed in 1986. Since then the temple has received recognition from all over the
world for its splendid architecture and design. Lotus Temple is among the most visited
monuments in India. The credit for building this beautiful structure goes to the Persian
architect Fariborz Sahba from Canada. The design looks like a half opened Lotus flower with
27 freestanding "petals" made of marble. The architect, while designing the temple took into
account the eternal beauty of Lotus flower. The construction work took almost 10 years
before it finally got shape and was open for public. The team comprised of 800 engineers,
technicians, workers and artisans who worked diligently to give realization to one of the most
complex edifices in the world. The temple integrates the aesthetic values along with the
technological influence within the whole structure. There are nine reflecting pools that
encompass the temple from outside. Converting the geometry of the design that did not have
any straight line to the actual structure needed a lot of effort and dedicated engineering.

The Jantra Mantra (literally the 'instrument and formula' and often called the JantarMantar),
is located in the modern city of New Delhi, Delhi. It consists of 13 architectural astronomy
instruments. The site is one of five built by Maharaja Jai Singh II of Jaipur, from 1724
onwards, as he was given by Mughal emperor Muhammad Shah the task of revising the
calendar and astronomical tables. There is plaque fixed on one of the structures in the Jantar
Mantar observatory in New Delhi that was placed there in 1910 mistakenly dating the
construction of the complex to the year 1710. Later research, though, suggests 1724 as the
actual year of construction.
The primary purpose of the observatory was to compile astronomical tables, and to predict
the times and movements of the sun, moon and planets. Some of these purposes nowadays
would be classified as astronomy.

Masjid of Delhi, is the principal mosque of Old Delhi in India. Commissioned by the Mughal
Emperor Shah Jahan, builder of the Taj Mahal,in the year 1650 CE and completed in the year
1656 AD, it is the largest and best-known mosque in India. It lies at the beginning of the

Muslims, Jummah, which are usually done in a mosque, the "congregational mosque" or
"jami' masjid". The courtyard of the mosque can hold up to twenty-five thousand
worshippers. The mosque also houses several relics in a closet in the north gate, including an
