1. (6 points) The average length of time a customer spends waiting in a cashier line at a particular
store is normally distributed with a mean of 5.2 minutes and a standard deviation of 1.4 minutes. For
a randomly selected customer, what is the probability that the time spent waiting in the line will be
between 5 and 8 minutes?

Need: P(5<X<8)
5 5. 2
0.14
For X=5: z1
1 .4
For X=8: z 2

8 5 .2
2
1 .4

z2=2

z1=0.14

For, z1=0.14, the area to the left of z is 0.4443.

For, z2=2, the area to the left of z is 0.9772.

P 5 X 8 P 0.14 z 2
0.9772 0.4443 0.5329 or 53.29%

2. (4 points) Consider the same data for the cashier line waiting time given in #1 above. For a
randomly-selected sample of 10 customers, what is the probability that the sample mean time spent
, will be less than 6 minutes?
in the line,

The Central Limit Theorem applies, so we obtain the z-score:

6 5 .2
1 .4

10

1.81
z=1.81

The area under the curve to the left of z 1.81 is 0.9649. Therefore:

P X 8 6 P z 1.81 0.9649 or 96.49 %

3. (5 points) The average length of time a car is rented at a particular agency is 4.8 days. Assume
that the distribution is normally distributed, with a standard deviation of 1.4 days. Then 10% of car
rentals are longer than how many days?

For the top 10%, need 40% of the

area above the mean. Thus, the area
to the left of the z-score will be:
10%
0.5 + 0.4 = 0.9
The closest area is 0.8997 for z=1.28.
Therefore:

X 4.8 1.28(1.4)
6.6

So 10% of car rentals are longer than 6.6 days.

Compare to Sec. 6.2 #25.

BONUS (up to 1.5 points): In a normal distribution, find when = 6 and P X 56.78 0.1292 .
From the table, find the z-score that
corresponds to an area of 0.1292 to the right:
1 0.1292 = 0.8708
By locating 0.8708 on the table, it can be
determined that z = 1.13.Thus:

0.1292

z=1.13

56.78 = + 1.13(6)
= 56.78 6.78 = 50
