1. (8 points) There are 8 freshmen and 5 seniors in the campus game room.
a. How many different ways are there to select 4 people to play a game of pool?

This is selection of a group of 4 from 13 people, so order does not matter.

Therefore, it is a combination:
13 C4 =

13!
13 12 11 10
=
= 13 11 5 = 715
9! 4!
432

b. How many ways are there to select 2 freshmen and 2 seniors for a game of pool?

This is the number of ways to select 2 freshmen from the 8, times the
number of ways to select 2 seniors from the 5:

(8 C2 )(5 C2 ) =

8!
5!

= 28 10 = 280
6! 2! 3! 2!

c. Suppose 4 people are selected from the group at random to play a game. What is the
probability that there will be 2 freshmen and 2 seniors selected?

(2 Fr & 2 Se) =

280
56
=
= 0.392 39.2%
715 143

2. (7 points) A movie theater manager has 4 action movie posters and 6 comedy movie posters
a. If the manager wants to hang 5 posters on the wall, how many possible arrangements are
there?

10 P5 =

10!
= 10 9 8 7 6 = 30,240
5!

Alternatively, use the Fundamental Counting Rule for

the same result.

b. If the manager wants to hang 6 posters on the wall, where the first and last must be for action
movies, and the ones in the middle are comedies, how many possible arrangements are there?

Using the Fundamental Counting Rule:

4 6 5 4 3 3 = 4320
Alternatively, can use permutations. Order 2 of the 4 action movie
posters, and 4 of the 6 comedy movie posters:
4! 6!
(4 P2 )(6 P4 ) = = (4 3)(6 5 4 3) = 4320
2! 2!

BONUS (Up to 1.5 points): A bookstore manager has to arrange 3 biographies, 2 joke books, and 5
novels on a display counter. If the books of each type are to be displayed consecutively, how many
different possible orders for the display are there?

The 3 book groups can be arranged in 3 2 1 = 6 possible orders.

By the Fundamental Counting Rule, or the permutation rule, there are:
3 2 1 = 6 possible orders for the biographies,
2 1 = 2 orders for the joke books, and
5 4 3 2 1 = 120 orders for the novels.
Thus, the number of ways that the display can be arranged is:

6 6 2 120 = 8640
