Every artist has a definition of source; all little pools of the personal that seek to flow
towards a larger body; to somehow return to an undifferentiated unity from which the
familiar can resonate. Source can be one that creates; a maker, or that which supplies
information; a source code. Source can be a point at which substance springs into being or
the energy input point of a system. Nature as refuge from the artificial constructs of
civilization is always present as source. It is from a natural source that humanity has
diversified creating competition and inventing technologies that have brought with them
global problems of massive proportions.

Pat Goslee lives and works in Washington, DC. She received a BFA in graphic design from the
University of Georgia and an MFA in painting from Catholic University. She has served on the
Board of Directors for the Washington Arts Museum (WAM) and the DC Arts Center (DCAC), and
the Advisory Committee for International Arts & Artists' Hillyer Art Space. She has been a visiting
artist lecturer at local institutions including American University and the Corcoran Collage of Art
+ Design.

Guitarist and singer/songwriter Derek Miller will perform a mix of blues and rock including many songs by
musicians featured in the exhibition, including Link Wray, Jesse Ed Davis, Peter LaFarge, Jimi Hendrix,
Redbone, Robbie Robertson, and Buffy Sainte-Marie. Derek Miller is a journeyman musician with eclectic taste

Canada in 1974, Miller became interested in music in his early teens, and by the late '90s had not only toured
with iconic Canadian vocalist Buffy Sainte-Marie, but had also won a Canadian Aboriginal Music Award. In
2000 he performed on and co-produced Keith Secola & the Wild Band's album Fingermonkey. In 2002 he

Summer Nights: Fort Reno Concerts

Where can you find hordes of unrestrained, dancing teenagers, hipster toddlers and dogs, and
music-fanatic families and friends restraining dogs and toddlers while dodging unrestrained,
dancing teenagers? Try the eclectic crowd at the Fort Reno concert series.

Expect the best of D.C.'s hardcore rawk, punk and any-kind-of-indie music scene in these twice-
weekly concerts, which run through mid-August. It's a great way to discover local bands
(including Tereu Tereu, pictured), eat a picnic spread (sans wine — the park doesn't allow
booze) or simply lie back and people-watch.

Shows are 7:00-9:30 p.m.

Chesapeake and Nebraska Avenues NW (Tenleytown)

Fort Reno is located across the street from Woodrow Wilson High School.

From time to time shows get rained out, if you're ever wondering if a show is happening or not

D. B. Stovall, a native Washingtonian, displays his vibrant large

format photographs of classically American landscapes in this
series. Saturated with color, these images reveal the nuanced design
of mid-century American storefront architecture, from Morgantown
to North Platte, Nebraska to Cheyenne; showcasing “things that
seem mundane or commonplace to others yet define our existence,”
which is how Stovall describes “American Vernacular.”

D.B. Stovall worked for almost 10 years as a professional

photographer after graduating from the Rochester Institute of
Technology in the mid-'70s, doing mostly industrial work and
graphic. After a nearly twenty year hiatus, Stovall returned to
photography after he was inspired by a cable television program on
historical Silver Spring. Advances in digital technology, software
and printing enabled him to transform his original photographs into
richly detailed prints.

He now resides in Richmond, VA and is an electrical engineer for a

private firm. His work has been shown at The Delaplaine Visual
Arts Center in Frederick, MD and at the Glenview Mansion Art
Gallery in Rockville, MD.

The Palestine Center invites you to a book signing and reception

"The Peace Process: From Breakthrough to Breakdown"

with

Amb. Afif Safieh

Author and former PLO Ambassador to the U.S.

Wednesday, July 7, 6:30-8:00 p.m.

The Palestine Center
2425 Virginia Avenue NW

Washington, DC 20037

Former PLO Ambassador to the United States Afif Safieh will offer brief remarks about his new book The
Peace Process: From Breakthrough to Breakdown and hold a book signing as well. This is a unique
opportunity to pick up a copy of this brand new title which will not be available in bookstores until the fall.

Amb. Afif Safieh was born in Jerusalem in 1950 and is the Roving Ambassador for Special Missions for the
PLO and the Fatah Deputy Commissioner for International Relations. He served as Head of Mission in
London, Washington and Moscow, as well as in the Holy See and the Netherlands.

The Palestine Center is happy to hold this event in coordination with the Washington Report on Middle East
Affairs. Light refreshments will be provided.
This briefing is free and open to the public. Registration is required.
Unregistered guests will not be admitted. To register, click here or call (202)
338-1958 ext.11 by noon Monday, July 6.

The Palestine Center is an independent think-tank committed to communicating reliable and

objective information about the Palestinian political experience to American policy makers,
journalists, students and the general public. Established in 1991, it is the educational program
of the Jerusalem Fund for Education and Community Development.

The Palestine Center brings together people and resources within the American and Palestinian
communities to educate about Palestine and the Palestinian people's ongoing quest for
sovereignty on their land, civil and political rights and an end to Israeli occupation.

The need for an organization such as The Palestine Center can be found in the effects of the
economic, cultural and political oppression Palestinians have endured and which continues on a
daily basis in East Jerusalem, the West Bank, the Gaza Strip, the surrounding refugee camps
and for Palestinians world-wide as they struggle to retain their homeland.

Palestinians' ability to maintain their daily lives and strengthen their democratic political system
depends on international humanitarian and non-governmental organizations such as The
Palestine Center.

Opening Reception

Thursday, July 8, 6:30-8:30 p.m.

Long View Gallery

1234 Ninth Street NW

Washington, DC 20005

RSVP: info@longviewgallery.com

Long View Gallery announces the upcoming exhibition “Informed Design,” opening on July 8 and
running through August 1. “Informed Design” strives to expound on the role of art objects within
the context of interior design and architecture. This exhibition will feature a sampling of the
inventory in our newly launched corporate art consulting branch, as well as two architectural
design vignettes by leading D.C. architects Ernesto Santalla and David Jameson.

In contrast to typical gallery shows in which pieces hang on blank white walls, “Informed Design” demonstrates
how art can influence or interact with an interior. “Informed Design” aims to explore the relationship between
art and architecture, and argues that exceptional works of art establish dialogues with their surroundings. The
show will encompass a wide variety of abstract paintings and low relief sculptures by artists on our corporate art
consulting roster. These artists include: Joan Konkel, Anne Marchand, Victoria Cowles, Steve Griffin, Patricia
Burns, Wanda Wainsten, and Susan Finsen.

Local architects Ernesto M. Santalla of Studio Santalla and David Jameson of David Jameson Architect Inc.
will install site-specific vignettes to accompany our artwork selections. Santalla and Jameson both consider art
as the hub of their respective design processes.

Educated in the Bauhaus style of architecture, Santalla’s vignette adopts the unique curatorial approach of
selecting artworks according to which pieces best utilize the space. His vignette incorporates a site-specific
installation by Barbara Josephs Liotta, as well as a series of paintings by Ralph Turturro that echo the texture of
gallery’s stone pillars. Specifically created for “Informed Design,” Liotta will unveil a 20-foot tall installation
composed of white marble stones and matching tie cord that float against a black wall. She describes her work
as “stripping away the superfluous and the decorative. I strive for a sort of essence, a clarity that will allow the
work grace but not prettiness, rhythm but not contrivance, balance but not inertness. I strive to animate, not
merely inhabit a space.” The work should resonate both with the architecture of the space it occupies, and with
the materials from which it is constructed.”

Jameson’s vignette similarly allows the physical gallery space to dictate his design. Inspired by the raw feel of
the exposed brick and concrete, he has selected work by artists that complement the industrial look of the
gallery. According to Jameson, “conceptually, we are attempting to create an installation that stitches together a
tectonic experience formed by pressures of the space with an art experience positioned within the added tectonic
elements.” Displaying works by celebrated artists Steve Cushner, Mary Early, James Huckenphaler and Jackie
Hoysted, Jameson is creating a gallery within the gallery by installing pillars, echoing the existing concrete
beams, to act as walls. Not only will the architectural design choices enhance the interior of the gallery, they
will also heighten the experience of viewing the artwork that adorns them, further elaborating on the importance
of art objects in interiors.

The Friends of the Torpedo Factory Art Center

Invite you to a Reception

To honor our 2010 Artists of the Year

Marsha Staiger and Alison Sigethy

July 8, 6:00-8:00 p.m.

Target Gallery

Torpedo Factory Art Center

105 North Union Street

Alexandria, VA 22314

The Torpedo Factory Art Center’s Target Gallery will host the 2010 Artist of the Year exhibition, which is
sponsored by the Friends of the TFAC. The exhibit runs from July 8 through August 15.

The “Artist of the Year” is a juried competition recognizing a Torpedo Factory artist for outstanding
achievement in art, and awarding the winner a cash prize of $1000 and a month-long exhibit in the Target
Gallery. The juror for this year’s contest is Amy Cavanaugh Royce, Gallery Director and Vice President of
Honfleur Gallery in Washington DC.

For this year’s competition the Friends allowed Torpedo Factory artists to submit collaborative projects for
consideration. This year’s winners are abstract painter Marsha Staiger and glass sculptor Alison Sigethy.

These two artists present Art in Balance: Rhythm and Repetition, an exhibit that investigates the paradox
of balance, the nature of rhythm, and the beauty and order created by repetition. Staiger's and Sigethy's
works are very different but have in common a clean, contemporary aesthetic. Staiger's vibrant color
palette is calmed by Sigethy's soft monochrome tones, while Sigethy's tranquil round forms are energized
by Staiger's horizontal bands that pulse and vibrate with energy.

The Friends of the Torpedo Factory Art Center, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit membership organization
whose mission is to both bring art to the community and connect the community to art. It sponsors a
variety of arts-related programs and events in collaboration with the Torpedo Factory Art Center.

An Evening of Business and Social "Nautical

Networking" at Current
{ Wednesday, July 14 }

All aboard! NetParty invites you to

"board the current and embark
on a tantalizing journey that is
bound to stimulate all of your
senses" at this Dupont Circle
hotspot. (TheScene.com).

NetParty made its DC debut in April as more

than 300 young professionals joined us at
Shadow Room. On Wednesday, July 14, you
are cordially invited to another evening
"combining business networking and social fun"
(Forbes "Best of the Web") and to find out why
Cosmo called us "One of the Top New Ways to
Meet" and Las Vegas Weekly dubbed us "the
mother lode, the very seat of business/social
networking."

Our evening will be one of an aquatic nature, as we "ascend the grand

floating staircase" (The Washington Post) and take over The 2nd Floor
and The Deck at Current. That's "where the action is," according to The
Washington Post, who made Current an Editor's Pick and confirmed that
for Current, it's "full speed ahead."

Our guests will enjoy:

• Happy Hour Drink Specials (to be announced)

• Music played at a low volume to facilitate successful business
networking during our networking cocktail hours (6 pm - 8 pm)
• DJ spinning great music and creating a more social atmosphere after
8 pm while still allowing for continued conversation and interaction
• The chance to be part of a networking event unlike other boring
business card exchanges and to meet young professionals like you
for both business contacts and friendships.

Conceived as "an ultra-futuristic luxury yacht," Current is "sleek and

sophisticated" (CityLiving.com) and "nautical touches abound: The ribs
overhead look like the below-decks of a cruise ship, and "portholes" in the
ceiling allow views between floors, though a constant wash of water keeps
the glass slightly opaque." (The Washington Post).

If you choose to set sail with us, we sadly cannot promise Naked Sushi.
But we can promise hundreds of young professionals and a chance to
make lasting connections for landlubbers and seafarers alike.

We look forward to seeing you!

Opportunities

National Urban Fellows' leadership development program is a rigorous, 14-month, full-time

graduate degree program comprising two semesters of academic course work and a nine-month
mentorship assignment. Fellows receive a $25,000 stipend, health insurance, a book allowance,
relocation and travel reimbursement, and full payment of tuition, in addition to their ongoing
personal and professional development.

The program culminates in a Master of Public Administration (MPA) degree from the City of New
York's Bernard M. Baruch College, School of Public Affairs. During the mentorship, Fellows
complete course work via distance learning. An MPA degree is awarded to Fellows upon
completion of all academic and program requirements.

Following graduation, Fellows become part of a prestigious group of well over 1,000
multicultural, multiracial alumni who are graduates of the National Urban Fellows program and
who are effecting positive changes in communities nationally and internationally. Individually
and collectively, they are helping to create an equitable and just society while serving as role
models for future generations.

Fellows apply their expertise in the public sector, contributing their newly acquired leadership
skills to public service for the betterment of their communities and the nation. They return to
their former or new occupations more experienced in public policy decision-making and are
better prepared to make a strong commitment to equity and social justice, thereby fulfilling the
mission of the program. Finally, Fellows give back to the organization that supported them,
recognizing that their ongoing commitment, engagement and involvement and/or annual giving
will help to secure the future of National Urban Fellows.

To all our partners in the DC region -

Thanks again for your support of StreetWise Partners' programs over the last 12 months. We are excited
about further developing and improving our Career Ventures program, as well as our Alumni workshops
over the next year, to better help motivated low-income individuals. Currently 77% of participants have a
job, a promotion or pay-rise, or are enrolled in a career advancing education program within 6 months of
starting our Career Ventures program. We want to get this up to 100%!

I hope you will continue to support our efforts as a volunteer, and we have a new Mock Interview Day on
July 13th (downtown Washington, D.C., 6:30pm - 9:00pm) that we're offering to individuals who are
applying to participate in our Fall program. Volunteers will conduct three mock interviews in different
interviewer ‘roles’ - CEO, Line Manager, HR Manager – to give the experience of different types of interviews.
Volunteers then give feedback about their performance and their resume. You can RSVP to volunteer at this
event by responding to this email!

If you're interested in helping us with our current challenge campaign to raise $100,000 by the end of June
(last day of the campaign today!), then you can text the word ‘partners’ to 20222 now to donate $10 to
support our incredible programs. An easy way to make a difference, without even leaving your desk! (more
details below).

Thank you so much for your ongoing support.

Best wishes,

Lauren

First, THANK YOU so much for your help in making this year’s BBQ Battle such a success! We could not
have done it without you. Know that you made a difference, and we very appreciative of those who choose
to serve with us or on our behalf.

You are receiving this email because you marked on your Volunteer Form (when you signed up for BBQ
Battle) that you were interested in other volunteer opportunities with Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater
Washington. PLEASE read on about the process to becoming a regular volunteer with us as well as some
general volunteer roles that may interest you.

ABOUT THE PROCESS:

In order to regularly volunteer at a Club, the applicant must complete, sign, and return the application
packet. This will include a registration form (attached), a background investigation consent form
(attached), a fingerprint card, AND a copy of their photo ID. Fingerprint cards can be mailed to the
applicant or picked up from a Club location. Attached you will find a listing of fingerprinting agencies with
which you can make an appointment to complete the card.

**Please note that applicants under the age of 18 are not required to undergo a fingerprint
check, though they MUST complete the background investigation consent and permission form
for minors and have each form signed by legal parent/guardian. Be sure to include ALL
required information including social security number and signature(s)**

ABOUT YOUR ROLE:

Volunteer roles vary as specific Club needs change. Applicant's interests and skills may also determine a
potential volunteer role. General opportunities could easily include tutors, mentors, program aides,
administrative aides, maintenance, beautification/repair, events/fundraising, or even pro bono services
based on your skills. BGCGW also offers summer programming at most locations. Summer schedules often
times include field trips, educational enrichment workshops, sports/fitness activities, arts & crafts, and
more!

I can help narrow it down by your specific interests or region (MD, DC, VA). Speaking with staff at a specific
Club is another great way to help select a location. We have 8 Clubs in VA, 8 in DC, and 2 in MD. I have
attached a listing of our Clubs for your review. This directory includes Club addresses, phone numbers, and
contacts.

Please don't hesitate to let me know how/if I can be of further assistance OR if you have any
colleagues/classmates that may be interested as well. Thanks again for your recent contribution; we hope
to see you again soon!!!

CAAB is recruiting volunteers for the DC EITC Campaign tax season (February-April 2010). Our greatest
need is for Savings Promoters – volunteers who would talk to people waiting to get their taxes done about
taking money management classes, savings, direct depositing their refund, and the like. No experience
necessary, we train you.
We are also looking for tax preparation volunteers able to work at East of the River tax sites, during
daytime hours, or who speak Spanish, Chinese, or Amharic. It’s a good, low-commitment volunteer
opportunity because it’s only 3 months. See the email below and please pass on to your networks!

Thanks,

You Can Change Lives,

One Return at a Time

This tax season you can be a part of a tremendous effort that brings over $9 million

into the homes of DC’s low-income working families each year.

Volunteer as a Savings Promoter or Tax Preparer with the

DC Earned Income Tax Credit Campaign
(www.dceitc.org)!

Our Success Depends On Volunteers Like You!

Make a Difference
Each tax return completed by a volunteer preparer can raise a low-income working
family’s income by more than $6,000.

This income boost can help a working family get out of debt, afford winter coats, pay utility bills,
and save for future goals and needs.

Savings Promoter volunteers* will also be on site helping families use their refunds to
move up the economic ladder!

*The Campaign's greatest need is for additional Savings Promoter volunteers.

No Professional Experience Needed

If you know how to complete a tax return, or have done your own taxes, you can volunteer as a
tax preparer. All preparers receive 12 hours of free training (on Saturdays and/or weekdays
evenings) and IRS certification in January.

Or, if you would rather volunteer as a Savings Promoter, you will receive 4 hours of interactive
training to enable you to help clients save their refunds, enroll in Money Management classes
and credit counseling, and even open direct deposit accounts!

Opportunities for Everyone

In addition to tax preparers, we need volunteer interpreters and Savings Promoter
volunteers to educate clients about savings products and free financial resources.

Volunteers at some sites will even help eligible clients register for Food Stamps.

Flexible Hours & Locations

Volunteer for 3-4 hours a week from January 30 through mid April at one of 12 sites throughout
the DC area. Most sites are open on evenings and/or weekends.
