1940 Richard and Maurice McDonald opened McDonalds Bar-B-Q restaurant

on Fourteenth and E streets in San Bernardino, California. It is a typical drive-


in featuring a large menu and car hop service.

1948 Dick and Mac McDonald shut down their restaurant for three months for
alterations. In December it reopened as a self-service drive-in restaurant. The
menu is reduced to nine items: hamburger, cheeseburger, soft drinks, milk,
coffee, potato chips and a slice of pie. The staple of the menu is the 15 cent
hamburger. Speedee became the company symbol in December, 1948.
Speedee was a miniature animated chef.

1954 Multimixer salesman Ray Kroc visited MDonalds in San Bernardino intending
to sell the brothers more Multimixers. The 52 year old Kroc is fascinated by
the operation. He learned from the brothers that they are looking for a
nationwide franchising agent. He has an epiphany and is determined that his
future would be in hamburgers.

1955 Kroc opened his first McDonalds in Des Plaines, Illinois on April 15. The
attention getting red and white tiled building with the Golden Arches was
designed by architect Stanley Meston in 1953. First day sales are $366.12. By
1965 there would be over 700 McDonalds restaurants throughout the United
States.

1961 Hamburger University opens in the basement of the Elk Grove Village, Illinois,
McDonalds restaurant. Graduates receive Bachelor of Hamburgerology
degrees.

A modemistic Golden Arches logo inspired by the McDonalds red and white
building slanted roof replaces Speedee as the companys logo. Ray Kroc
purchased the interest of the McDonald brothers along with rights to the
McDonalds name for $2.7 million.

1965 McDonalds celebrates its 10th anniversary with the first public stock offering
at $2250 per share.

1967 The first international McDonalds restaurants opened in Canada and Puerto
Rico. Today McDonalds are in 119 countries around the world.

1969 The McDonalds logo underwent a major change. Massive remodeling of


restaurants did away with the old red and white buildings and more emphasis
was placed on the ever-more-famous Golden Arches.

1981 The first McDonalds restaurants in Spain, Denmark, and the Philippines
opened.

1998 The Made For You kitchen operating platform rolled out into U.S.
restaurants, allowing for greater customization of our meu items & more
kitchen flexibility. Made For You is now the common operating platform used
in McDonalds kitchens around the globe.

2003 McDonalds strategic framework, the Plan To Win, is launched. Through the
execution of initiatives focusing on People, Products, Place, Price and
Promotion, we have enhanced the restaurant experience worldwide and
grown comparable sales & customer visits in each of the last nine years.

First global ad campaign, Im lovin it, is launched in Munich, Germany on


September 2.

2008 McDonalds introduces the most comprehensive global packaging design in


the Brands History.

2010 McDonalds offers its customers free Wi-Fi in more than 28, 000 McDonalds
restaurants around the world.
