Over the course of 10 weeks, I worked with Dr. Cengiz Gnay at the Georgia Gwinnett College in
Lawrenceville. Dr. Gnay works as a professor in the School of Information Technology. During my internship,
I assisted Dr. Gnay with his research project which combined his professional subject expertise with his
passion for neurobiology. While I received guidance, direction, and goals from my mentor, much of my duties
were left to self-direction. I was generally tasked with researching neurobiological systems and the most recent
advances in the computer simulation of said systems. Later in the project, Dr. Gunay and I worked with raw,
empirical data and worked with the data to produce 3D viewing models. Through my internship, I handled the
manipulation of neuronal data, eventually coming to develop novel pre-manipulation formatting protocols.
These protocols enabled us to automate the formatting process and directly convert the raw data we received to
data capable of being processed by highly specialized interfaces such as NEURON and neuroConstruct. I gained
a rich and informative experience in my field of interest, computational science, and I hope to apply my findings
in future work.
Interning at The Gwinnett Environmental and Heritage Center
Adelina L.
For my Junior Fellowship Experience, I worked at The Gwinnett Environmental and Heritage Center. My
mentor, Ms. Long, tasked me with preparing for upcoming events. I was responsible for overseeing the crafts and
activates during special events. I directed the Viking Ship construction station for Leaf Erikson Day; I was able to
interact with children and adults. I managed the Raccoon Cursin game for Creatures of the Night. I created a
competitive point system for the game to interest the kids in learning about raccoons. I was also responsible for
commanding the yarn doll craft for Holiday on the Home Front. I helped the children, teens, and adults make their
own yard dolls while explaining the history behind them (when and why they were made). I developed my work
skills. Prior to working at The Gwinnett Environmental and Heritage Center, I had no experience in the workplace. I
utilized good communication skills, and I was able to speak to a verity of people and age groups. I also learned
about history, such as how the people reacted to the Civil War in Georgia. I used the laminator at the center to
laminate signs, booklets, and informational papers. I also had the option of using the computer at the canter to
conduct research. I had an amazing experience at the center working on many different projects. Every day was
Ketovangelist
Alif R.
For my Junior Follow Experience, I had the opportunity to work at the Ketovangelist, which is an experience that
occurred online as my mentor is stationed in Texas. My mentors name is Brian Williamson, who was an expert with
the ketogenic diet. Under his supervision I researched various topics over the ketogenic diet such as the ketogenic
diet in relation to cancer to topics like the ketogenic diet and strength and endurance. From this experience I learned
to work to a deadline, to work more efficiently, and quickly. I was charged with researching a wide variety of topics,
reporting to him when work was complete, and keeping all completed work in an organized manner. I learned how
to have a formal conversation and how to keep only the important topics in research. The main piece of technology
that I did use, however, was my laptop where I would work diligently to complete research. Over all, my Junior
Fellowship Experience was a wonderful opportunity to hone and further develop new and already present skills.
Working at EiS Tech
Amrita N.
I had the opportunity to conduct my internship at EiS Technologies this fall semester. At EiS I was fortunate to have
three amazing mentors; their names are Mr. Naveen Miglani, Mr. Alex Ringold, and Zach Batastini. My mentors
gave me two projects to work on during my time at their office. The first project was to understand the basics of
Adobe Photoshop and to create a banner that the company could post on its social media platforms. This
understanding of Photoshop is one of the hard skills I want to attain, and I did. My second task was to use Adobe
Premier to put a video together. While I did not complete the video project because of hardware issues, time
restrictions, and software difficulties, I still learned some of the key techniques in Premier. I plan to finish the
project on my own time to advance my skills. My mentors also gave me marketing lessons to implement in my work
in order to try and make the banner more appealing for potential customers. All in all, this experience has taught me

During my JFE, I worked on an independent science fair project. My mentor is Jobie Johnson, the AP Psychology
and AP Lit teacher here at GSMST. My three main goals for this individual study were to write a research paper on
the topic I chose, conduct experiments based on the procedure I constructed, and to write the final research paper as
a deliverable. As for what I have gained over this experience is mainly intellectual knowledge, as I was not assigned
with any specific tasks that required hands-on skill based knowledge. I learned about the basics of memory and
cognitive abilities, the effects music has on us as humans, the procedural requirements for conducting an experiment
with the background of cognition, and semantic knowledge based on the results of the experiments. In conclusion,
this experience was quite interesting. I enjoy learning about topics that I find fascinating, therefore my attitude
towards this project was no short of enthusiastic. I hope to continue on the path of psychology in the future.
My Experience Interning for Park Ridge Wellness Center
Bilal T.
I have been interning at Park Ridge Wellness Center in Chamblee for the last nine weeks. My mentor was the
Director of Operations at Park ridge, Ms. Laurie Simpson. While interning, I placed patients onto therapy either
before or after they had seen the doctor depending on the doctors preference. I implemented the knowledge I
gained from watching the clinical staff place patients on therapy to complete the task myself. This involved me
using the E-STIM machine which focuses electrical pulses on a certain tissue or muscle using a controlled
electoral source to relieve pain. Also, I shadowed the doctors at Park Ridge to gain experience about the medical
field and gather knowledge about the complex human body. Most of the information I learned concerned the
complex spinal cord and its branching relations to almost all other organs and parts the body. When a doctor
was not available for me to shadow, I assisted the clinical staff in any way possible. This ranged from gathering
patient charts for upcoming office hours to archiving charts after patients had seen the doctors. Overall my
internship experience was extremely positive since I gained valuable information on a potential field of interest.

My internship was located at the Lan Mahon Family Practice where I shadowed Dr. Lan Mahon. My shadowing
experience involved observing the conversations between my mentor and her patients. Other responsibilities
included, retrieving prescription coupons for patients and helping the nurse assistants. I leave this internship having
experienced various types of personalities and as a result, feel more comfortable in my communication skills.
Throughout my internship, my mentor would constantly jot down notes onto an iPad. Because of my internship, my
knowledge regarding different tools and software a doctor uses in their day-to-day job far exceeds what it was prior.
This internship has been a wonderful experience that has really help guide my future plans. I never had a day where
I regretted picking this place and career field as my internship because every day I was excited to learn something
new. Whether I learned a new medical term or conversed with patients, I knew that these experiences would help in

Over the past few months, I have had my Junior Fellowship Experience in the warehouse of Crosslink
Orthopdics, a company that holds and sells medical equipment to hospitals. In this experience, I have worked
under multiple different analysts in the warehouse, mainly my mentor, Charles Maynard. I had multiple
responsibilities, primarily combing through different kits that are used in surgeries, replacing the parts close to
expiring, and using the operating system called WebOps to send expired parts for recycling. In my time at
Crosslink, I learned much about what a person working in Logistics must be capable of accomplishing. They
must be capable of examining a system and of revising it for maximized efficiency. I also had the opportunity to
learn about factors that affect warehouse efficiency, being staff size, working hours, and product demand, in
order to best plan out controllable factors to increase warehouse efficiency. Overall, my experience has been
very intriguing, showing me the many possibilities to affect work productivity in a company scene. I hope that
these skills will aid me in my future endeavors, but I do plan to discover something new in my SCE while still

I worked under Dr. Yunker at Yunker Laboratories at Georgia Tech. My work centered around research into
aggressive bioparticle interactions in static, nonequilibrium systems. My main duty was creating and testing
simulations which modeled scenarios based on bioparticle interactions seen in nature. My responsibilities
encompassed updating Dr. Yunker on mysimulation progress and meeting with David (a grad student) to
compare his results to mine. My main accomplishments were: creating a basic simulation interactions of two
aggressive bioparticle species, developing another simulation where aggressive bioparticle species could only
interact with a rock paper scissors hierarchy, and I helping lay the framework for a simulation which would be
able to take any n number of bioparticle species and have m number of interactions to discern the
relationship between m and n. My work Spyder IDE software which allowed me code my programs in
python. The principle skills I learned were how to code in the python language and how to effectively
communicate the information gathered from my scientific research to my colleagues. Overall, my JFE was a
very fulfilling venture into professional scientific research. I will continue to work on this research until its

For my JFE, I worked on the GSMST campus in the music technology classroom as a teachers assistant and worked
on my personal album to be released on Wednesday, April 19, 2017. What made my JFE unique is that I had the
opportunity to be placed into the second period music technology class, rather than only having seventh period to
work. While in the classroom, my main duties were working with the 15 beginners level students on learning how to
use the new programs and working with the students in the studio and on studio equipment in the classroom so they
could enhance their music. In addition, I also worked closely with my mentor to record the orchestra, band, and
chorus concerts in October. I learned many things but the most notably of them was learning how to manipulate
audio in a program called Audacity. In addition, I also enhanced my communication and teaching skills while
working with students. My JFE experience was an incredible experience where I got to surround myself with many

I completed an internship at Emtech Labs in Norcross, Georgia under the mentorship of Mr. Bill Embry. During this
experience, I conducted a variety of physical property tests and explored how these impacted the final product. I also
discovered the business aspect of the chemistry industry, as my mentor started his own company and thereby
discussed various aspects to keep product cost efficient and environmentally friendly. From my results, I calculated
and altered percentages that improved previous products. These results were recorded in a lab notebook and an
Excel spreadsheet, which allowed me to understand the importance of providing detailed and accurate information
that may be used by others in the lab. I enjoyed familiarizing myself with the advanced technology including
electronic balances and titration setups, that enhanced my accuracy when creating solutions. Looking back on the
experience, I obtained a wealth of knowledge useful for both inside and outside of the lab.

I worked at the Aurora Theatre as a Teaching Assistant. My mentor was Renita James. I assisted Ms. India and Ms.
Jenise with the middle school acting class, and I assisted Ms. Jennifer and Mr. Elliot with the elementary acting
class. I checked the kids in each day, participated in theater games, worked with stage props, and read que lines.
Through this internship, I enhanced my acting and teaching skills, learned new theater games, and was introduced to
other jobs in theater, like the box office. In the box office, I had the opportunity to fully participate within the
organization systems and protocols of a business administrative environment. I also got the opportunity to watch two
final rehearsals of productions and one normal rehearsal of a production. After one of the productions, I had the
opportunity to ask the cast and director questions about the play. The overall experience was amazing and I would

My internship took place at the Gwinnett Technical College in building 900 with Dr. Schneider and, later, Ms.
Huynh. At my internship, I first worked with known bacteria in order to practice proper lab procedure and
familiarize myself with various experiments. Some experiments that were performed were culture isolation,
DNA extraction, and gram staining. After practicing these experiments, I was able to move on to my
independent research project that would be due to my mentor at the end of my internship. This independent
research project focused on the isolation and identification of bacteria from a soil sample. After testing with the
bacteria was finished, a formal research report and a poster was due to my mentor. Then, to conclude my
internship, I will shave to attend a project showcase and present my work. Throughout the course of my
internship, I learned how to do new experiments and how to do them safely. I also learned how to utilize both of
my hands while in the lab because, oftentimes, scientists do not have an extra partner to help them while in the
lab. On December 1, 2016, I will, as mentioned before, do presentations at my internship. This will help me to
better myself in summarizing events as the work that I have done will be presented to numerous people in 30
second spans. Overall, I am thankful for this internship, and I believe I may be interested in the bioscience field
of study.

For my Junior Fellowship Experience, I attended a special lab experience at Gwinnett Technical College with five
other classmates, and we were guided by our mentor, Dr. Huynh. By performing series of biochemical tests,
analyzing the results, and efficiently communicating the conclusions gained from the experiment we managed to
identify an unknown species of bacteria in a sample of soil from the environment. During the process, we learned
how to use various lab equipment, including micropipettes and micro centrifuges. Additionally, I gained experience
working with bacteria and writing a lab report. On a personal level, I enhanced my work ethic and effectiveness in
communicating scientific information. Overall, I enjoyed my Junior Fellowship Experience, and I am looking to

I worked for the Georgia Association of Student Councils alongside my mentor, Mrs. Nicole DAntonio. I was
tasked with creating an entire new website from scratch, producing monthly newsletters, and generating social
media content. From this experience, I learned how to code using JavaScript and HTML, start a website using the
platform of Weebly, manage myself in front of top executives, presidents, and employees, and properly and phrase
conduct the social media accounts I maintained. In early November, I was given the opportunity to visit the Georgia
State Capitol and the National Center for Civil and Human Rights. During the leadership summit, I met other
student delegates from across the state, listened to keynote speakers, and got the chance to further envelope myself
into the history of the civil rights movement. Overall, this was a fantastic experience that I am very grateful for. In
the future, I plan to go into the field of business, so the hard and soft skills that I obtained through this internship
supplies. My mentor is Mrs. Bennet who is the head of the Pis supplies division. One of my primary duties was to
be in charge of the cash register where I basically record customer sales and make transactions for each payment
made. Another one of my responsibilities was to troubleshoot system issues such as financial problems or frequent
glitches that can happen in payment submissions. I was also able to help film and develop advertisement videos
served to appeal the students at GSMST to purchase our products. In fact, one of my main accomplishments at this
internship was having the opportunity to create a 1-minute film that presented the supplies and clothes at the store.
As a result of this internship, I learned to make transactions to customer payments as well as understand the
advertisement behind many businesses. The only equipment and hardware I acquired was a laptop and adobe
premiere. My internship did not contain any training sessions or special events that I had to attend. My overall
experience with this internship has been great, and I got to learn many new things involved in finance and
marketing.
Internship at C-2 It, LLC
Kimberly L.
I was an intern at C-2 It, LLC, and C-2 It, LLC provides equine assisted therapies, which is essentially a variety of
activities with horses that improve a persons physical and social abilities. My mentor, Caroline Jaffee, has a
bachelors degree in psychology and sociology, and she is an Internationally Certified Equine Assisted Growth and
Learning Association Equine Specialist. I cared for the horses, guided clientele, and observed horse behavior.
Clients ranged from children to adults, but I only met younger children and teenagers while interning at the C-2 It
Ranch. Keeping children with mental disabilities engaged and well-behaved allowed me to better understand on
mental disabilities. Additionally, I became well versed in equine anatomy and physiology along with their diet
requirements. Furthermore, I observed and learned about mental disabilities in children even though we were not
allowed to know about their specific situations. This wonderful experience provided me insight on whether or not I
wished to pursue a career in veterinary science, and I decided that I would not like to have a veterinary career.

For my fall JFE, I was at The Gwinnett Eastside Medical Center and my mentor was Michelle Davis. My mentor is a
pre-operation nurse and over the course of my internship I shadowed her and conducted research over various
ailments that the patients had. There was a limited amount of activities that I could do without having some sort of
medical certification. When I was at my internship, I mostly interacted with the patients. I chatted with them during
the transitions of sorting out papers or recording the patients responses. Based on my research, I was expected to
have a general understanding of the each of the physical complications they had. I was also expected to know the
fundamental medical tools needed during most standard operations. From this internship experience, my
interpersonal skills have increased. I had to remember the environment that I was in during situations where a
patient did not like me. My time management and paperwork skills increased because of all the research I had to do
for my JFE. Overall, I think that my internship helped me grow as a person and provided insight on the environment
of my future profession.
Identification of Unknown Bacteria Samples in Soil at Gwinnett Technical College
Mahadia I.
For my JFE, I interned at Gwinnett Technical College. At the start of my internship, I was taught basic lab
techniques by my first mentor, Dr. Schneider. During this time, one of my primary tasks was to keep my lab
notebook updated with the new methods I learned. Throughout this time, I worked with a variety of lab
equipment like centrifuge, hot plates, and micropipettes. Also, I worked with a variety of selective media and
bacteria. The selective media chose for specific traits in bacteria, and the media helped in the identification of
the bacterias characteristics. After learning the basic lab techniques, I applied what I learned in a research
project. From the beginning of the research project, I worked under a new mentor, Miss Huynh. The purpose of
this research project was to identify two unknown samples of bacteria from soil. During the research project, my
primary goal was to identify my two unknown bacteria samples and produce a lab report. I was successfully able
to identify the bacteria. Additionally, I will have to give a presentation about my research project. Through this

Working as a scientist at EmTech Laboratories under the guidance of my mentor, Organic Chemist, Mr. Embry I
had the opportunity to see how science blends into the business world. My understanding was formed as I
concocted various chemical solutions for use as household and industrial products to be sold. From the solutions I
created, I was able to acquire a breadth of transferable lab skills as I conducted tests on the solutions and quality
checks on their physical properties to ensure their effectiveness under a multitude of environmental conditions while
also meeting patron requirements. Often a project was never complete after the successful mixing of one solution. I
also delved into experimentation. I made multiples of the same solution, changing the concentration of one element
or replacing a material chemical with a different chemical to determine the differences. My goal was to determine
the most effective solution for the job required of it. From cleaning solutions to paints, it is amazing how much goes
on behind the scenes to create the products used every day and how they are constantly being improved upon
because it is not just about what you can make. It is equally important how you can improve upon what has been
made.
BIOL 1000 Fundamentals of Research Internship Dual Enrollment at Gwinnett Technical College
Michelle G.
This fall, I enrolled in the BIOL 1000 course at Gwinnett Technical College, initially having Dr. Dana M. Schneider
and later Ms. Tyler Huynh as my mentor. The first half of the internship comprised of get-your-feet-wet-with-
GTC tours and talks, lectures, and supervised lab tasks. I practiced and perfected various common lab procedures
such as: aseptic technique, Gram stain, PCR, and DNA extraction. In the process, I had the opportunity to operate
expensive and delicate technology, such as centrifuges and a NanoDrop, to name a few. As the semester progressed,
I became more independent and, applying the newly learned techniques, completed my own research project, which
I will present to a professional audience. For the project, I collected various soil samples and performed a series of
biochemical characterization tests on the bacteria in the samples. By doing so, I analyzed the soil itself and
synthesized future implications. Throughout the internship, I not only obtained a decent foundation for my biology
major in the future, but I discovered and countered the weaknesses in my work ethic and recognized the importance

I interned at the Kumon Math and Reading Center of Lilburn-Killian Hill as a tutor for kids ranging from ages three
to eighteen. Kumon is an after-school tutoring program that serves both as way to help students struggling with math
and reading in school and as a way to teach students concepts beyond their grade level as advance preparation through
repetition and reinforcement. My mentor was Mr. Wook Kim, an experienced manager and educator at Kumon. There
were three main components to my internship: tutoring, grading, and recording. One of my jobs was to work with
struggling students and help them understand the material, sometimes a difficult feat considering the wide range of
math and reading encompassed in the Kumon curriculum. In between helping kids, another duty of mine is grading
homework and classwork with specific symbols. Finally, my third main responsibility was to record the homework
and classwork in each students record book and file it in the appropriate location. Through these tasks, I learned how
to explain concepts clearly and succinctly and how to be a leader that the kids would both respect and listen to, both
useful skills in the adult world. This was a valuable experience that gave me first-hand experience with being in
charge, organization, and adapting to and fulfilling the needs of a wide variety of people.
My Bioscience Experience: The Journey of Identifying Unknown Bacteria
Nooreen F.
I attended a Bioscience class which is used to train lab technicians at Gwinnett Technical College (GTC). I had two
mentors: Dr. Dana M. Schneider and Ms. Tyler Huynh. Dr. Schneider guided me for the first half of my research
project by teaching me the techniques of various processes I would be using for my research project. Ms. Huynh
assisted me by supervising my experiments and helping me format my lab report. I conducted characterization tests
to identify unknown bacteria and constructed a written report summarizing my project. Moreover, I will formally
present the results of my research project to the faculty of GTC on December 1, 2016. Overall, I discovered the
applications of biology in the lab. I also learned how to work independently without being fully directed by a
teacher. I used Chromas (a software used to obtain DNA sequences), and I operated a centrifuge, a NanoDrop, and a
gel electrophoresis ring. The presentation night on December 1 is a special event where I will have an opportunity to
share my results. My internship experience has been phenomenal because I have learned many new techniques and
Prince O.
My internship was at Gwinnett Tech College and started off under the mentorship of Dr. Schneider but is now
ending under the mentorship of Tyler Huynh because of a change of job opportunity. At the internship, our main
duty was keeping track of time so we have spare time for research. Another responsibility we had at the internship
was paying attention while the mentor is talking to us because without doing so, we are unable to start nor complete
the lab procedure. Last, we had to make sure we got to the job site in time so we can get a good start at work and
ensure a productive work day and not have to get caught up with any work that we may need to do. A hard skill that
was learnt at the internship was not procrastinating. This was incredibly important because it taught me how to
balance my time between internship and school hours. A science skill I learnt was how to characterize bacteria
through the use of differential media. Some equipment that was used was the pipette, centrifuge, microscopes and
agar plates. We are going to attend a science fair where we present a poster of a classified bacterium in the near
future.
Empowering Personalized Medicine
Sama S.
I worked at Alpha Genomix, which is a laboratory for clinical genetic testing. My mentor was Jasmine Render. She
is the labaccount senior supervisor. My Junior Fellowship Experience was a research experience project in which I
learned the daily operations and lab processes for determining how genetic differences among individuals can cause
varied responses to a drug. I learned the Operations/ Customer Service process of the lab by having lab days to see
each departments' duties/responsibilities.I had to read material and take a test to become HIPAA certified. HIPAA
stands for The Health Insurance Portability & Accountability Act. HIPAA ensures greater accountability and
simplifies administrative functions within the health care industry. I am a HIPAA certified compliant. While in the
lab, I worked with the Lab Technicians. I also observed the daily tasks and responsibilities of the lab account
supervisor, account specialists, and lab assistants. During my internship, I researched how genetic differences can
cause varied responses to a drug by performing my own swab test to review the Alpha Genomix Comprehensive
Report with the labs Medical Science Liaison. The reports that I have studied included sample reports for
psychiatry, cardiology, and pain. I was able to familiarize myself with different machines that are used in the lab. I
have worked with the Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) machine and the Roche magna pure 96 instrument to see
how they function. By working with these machines, I saw and understood the steps for the purification of DNA.
The (PCR) technique helped me see the process of amplifying DNA, which I found to be very incredible. I think that
my internship experience has been great, and that it will help me think about my future career options in medicine.
The Use of Therapeutic Equine Therapy to Help Individuals Overcome Obstacles
Ufuoma T.
My internship was based primarily in C-2 It, LLC. My mentor, Caroline Jaffee, provided us with primary duties that
were completed on a day to day basis along with experiences that highlighted the key features of the program. I was
responsible for managing each horses stall, creating each horses feed, and analyzing the differences among the
clients behaviors. With these tasks, the outcomes of the experience exemplified the skills that are necessary to grow
and develop new relationships. Throughout the internship, I developed the ability to mindfully care for and nurture
horses while promoting the therapeutic benefits of riding horses. Furthermore, I grasped the ability to safely monitor
clients that are upon a horse. In fact, I learned how to encourage clients while on the horse so they develop in their
treatment. Additionally, I built upon my social skills and found the importance of effectively communicating with
other individuals. I find it easier to interact with others and discovered the need to always ask questions. In all, this
Junior Fellowship Experience enabled me to develop the necessary relationships and skills that will further me in my
