OXYGEN SENSOR
The oxygen sensor senses the oxygen concentration in exhaust gas,
converts it into a voltage which is sent to the ECM. The oxygen
sensor outputs about 1V when the fuel ratio is richer than the
theoretical ratio and outputs about 0V when the ratio is leaner.
Based on this decision, the air/fuel ratio is feedback-controlled to
achieve the stoichiometric ratio at which the catalytic converter
operates most effectively. The ECM controls the fuel injection ratio
based on this signal so that the air fuel ratio is maintained at the
theoretical value.
The oxygen sensor has a heater
element which ensures the
sensor performance during all
driving conditions.

TITANIA OXYGEN SENSOR
The oxygen sensor detects oxygen concentration in exhaust gas for
the purpose of air/fuel feedback control, for an automobile unleaded
gasoline engine.
The zirconia oxygen sensor( ZrO2) is a voltage type oxygen sensor
but the TiO2 sensor is a resistance type oxygen sensor. The
resistance of titania element is changed by oxygen concentration in
exhaust gas. In case of rich condition, the oxygen ion is emitted into
the exhaust gas from the titania element. Hence, many electrons are
remained in the titania element. Finally, the electrical resiatance is
decreased by a flunt flow of electrons. In case of lean condition, the
resistance is increased because emitted oxygens are very few.The
resistance is suddenly changed around the stoichiometric air/fuel
ratio.The output voltage is also changed according to the resistance.
TITANIA OXYGEN SENSOR

Rich condition Low resistance 0V < output voltage < 0.4V


Lean condition High resistance 3.85V < output voltage < 5V
TITANIA OXYGEN SENSOR
The TiO2 sensor is activated for
temperatures higher than the
operation temperature(about
500C). A electrical heater on
the tip-element heats the sensor
up to the working temperture
range. The heater is controled
by the ECM(engine control
module).The operating voltage
of the heater is 6 ~ 16V. The
heater resistance is 4 ~ 5.2ohm
at 23C. The survival maximum
temperature at the ceramic tip is
950C.

CATALYTIC CONVERTER

Catalytic converters are most efficient when theoretical air fuel ratio
of 14.7:1 is maintained. The function of the converter is to absorb
the three main emission gases harmful to the environment(NOx,
CO, HC) and convert them to a environment friendly substances
such as Nitrogen and Water.
IDLE CO POTENTIOMETER

This is only used on open control vehicles(leaded fuel) in order to


control the quantity of CO at idle condition. The output voltage
changes when the shaft of the variable resistor is rotated. The
engine control module controls the fuel injection rate according to
this output voltage.

IDLE CO ADJUSTMENT (XG 25, EF 2.5L, LC)
Applicable vehicle : Leaded fuel engine for XG 25 and EF 2.5L.
Above vehicles doesn't equipt the idle CO potentiometer(variable
resistor) to adjust CO gas. Hi-scan can adjust the CO of exhaust
gas instaded of idle CO potentiometer. The emission gas tester
must be used with Hi-scan when adjusting the COgas. Checking
by gas tester, Adjusting by Hi-scan. Following figure is a idle CO
adjustment screen.

The evaporative emission canister purge solenoid valve is a duty


control type which controls the introduction of purge air from the
evaporative emission canister.
