Satire Notes:

- Use of humor, irony, exaggeration, or ridicule to expose and criticise people's


stupidity or vices.
- To portray his perspective on society
- Use irony, humor, exaggeration to make a point
- Valenzuelas satire is aimed more towards the individuals like Juan because his
perspective was able to change very quickly or opinion
- On the other hand, the govt. Were the people enforcing it and they were the ones
who were telling them it was alright.

Pacing Notes:
- How fast the story unfolds
- The way an author manipulates time in the text by controlling the actions,
dialogue, and word choice
- Actions emphasize scenes in the story, lack of action can slow the pacing of a
story
- Rapid fire dialogue with lesser or irrelevant information is captivating, swift, and
invigorates scenes.
- The language itself is a means of pacing, like using concrete words, active voice
and sensory information. These can slow/accelerate pace.

Foreshadowing:
- Literary device when the writer gives an advanced hint of what is to come later in
the story
- Author does this through dialogue, events, title, chapter titles, and actions
- Purpose is to create an atmosphere of suspense
- An example was in the first paragraph of The Censors, and when Juan tried to
organize a strike

Character Motivations:
- Motivation is what fuels a character and keeps them moving
- What is behind the goal of the character, what created the goal of them
- Juans motivation was keeping Marianna safe
- Motivation changed to working for the government, making sure there was no
corresponding. Kept saying how he was absorbed in the work

Irony:
- Two types of irony
- One is verbal irony which is when a character says something that contradicts a
previous statement made by the same person
- The other is situational irony which is when an event happens in the story going
against what is expected to happen
- Juan speaks against the government, but later he talks about how he is loyal to
his work
- Juan takes the job as a censor to send his own letter but ends up censoring it
