Dear families! Bonjour les parents!

February is another busy month in grade one. Can you believe that we will
celebrate the 100th day of school this month? We have lots of fun and exciting
learning activities to celebrate this milestone. In addition, students may bring
in Valentines Day cards for our classroom activities on Tuesday, February 14 th.
If possible, we encourage your child to wear red, pink, purple or white for our
Valentines Day celebration.

*For the 100th day of school, please have your child bring in 100 objects of
their choice ex. 100 cheerios, 100 stickers, 100 confetti pieces etc These items will be used for a fun
number sense math activity!

Here is a breakdown by subject of the topics we will be covering this month.

French Language:
Listening
Understanding Purposes for Listening : to hear and identify the sounds of the French language in
songs, chants, and poems; to increase vocabulary
Interacting : respond to a peers request in the classroom using words, gestures, and/or visual
aids

Speaking
Express wishes and needs to the teacher and their peers
Using Speaking Interaction Strategies :take turns; stay on topic; use a combination of words and
verbal cues
Ask and answer questions about themselves, their families, and their neighbourhood
Students must use taught vocabulary (i.e., classroom objects, colours, body parts, seasonal words)
and familiar language structures when participating in conversations AT ALL TIMES.
Vocabulary acquisition (Valentines Day and Feelings) through stories, songs, poems and games to
practice pronunciation and expression
Montre et Raconte Our monthly oral presentations will continue this month. Your childs
presentation date will be indicated on the attached calendar. In February, students are to bring
in a picture of their special friend Mon ami spcial or Mon amie spciale and share/tell two
things about him/her.

This is an evaluation of oral communication, students are not expected to read their presentation,
but speak.

Reading
Reading for Meaning: mime actions from a descriptive poem or comptine; make connections
between a story they have read and a personal experience
Purposes of Text Forms: poem/song - to express ideas or convey a mood; picture book - for
entertainment and reflection
Phonics/Sounds: Continue to introduce letter sounds (1 per week), sight words, word wall

Our formal Home Reading Program continues. Students are expected to read at home daily. The books
are expected to be returned to school every day as they are shared between classes. Please continue to
read any booklets your child has created using monthly vocabulary will be sent home to be used as a
nightly reading resource.

Writing
Share information about their family in an entry in their journals
Compose a personal account of a class event or outing; participate in shared writing of a class
book, list, poem, poster
Modelled/shared writing: Continue paragraph writing: learning how to put related sentences
together to form a paragraph.
Structures : Avoir et tre (Jai, tu as, il a, elle a, nous avons, vous avez, elles ont, ils ont, je suis,
tu es, il est, elle est, nous sommes, vous tes, ils sont, elles sont.
Capitals and periods, sentence to match picture, spacing, using correct printing lines

Mathematics:

Data management
Organize objects into categories by sorting and classifying objects using one attribute (e.g.,
colour, size, etc.)
Collect and organize primary data
Read primary data presented in concrete graphs and pictographs and describe the data using
comparative language
Pose and answer question about the data collected

Number Sense and Numeration

Social Studies:

The Community: describe some aspects of the interrelationship between people and the natural
and built features of their community with a focus on how the features of and services of the
community meet peoples needs.
Understanding context: describe significant aspects of their community with reference to
different areas, services and natural and built features demonstrating an understanding of basic
ways of describing location and measuring distance.
