Power Line Communications

Project Abstract
With the rapid growth of home networks, there is an
ongoing need for an economical and reliable
communications system that can be implemented in any
building. We investigate the applicability of Power Line
Communications (PLC) techniques to home networking
communications. The investigation is both theoretical and
practical, with a detailed report on all aspects of PLC
given before working power line link between two
computers is designed and tested. Topics covered include
feasible applications of PLC, currently available PLC
devices etc.

The problem of illegal usage of electrical energy, the

need of customized distribution system for efficient
energy use with maximum diversity factor. Remote
maintenance and in-house control of household
appliances like refrigerators, heating systems, smoke and
fire alarm systems. Data and voice communication in
intranet domain over power line and extend or link to
external data source or internet can be dealt with this
technique.
The power line channel is discussed at length, with
emphasis on noise and disturbances, attenuation,
channel modeling and signal coupling. Lastly, the design,
construction and testing of a working system is
performed and the results detailed.
