Abstract
Documentingthehistoryofwellbeingfromagenderperspective,aswellastrackingtheglobalprogressofwomensrightsand
circumstances,requiresananalysisofthediversityoftransformationsingenderrelationsacrosstimeandspace.Muchofthischange
hasresultedfromwomenbeingactiveagentsintheirowndestinies,individuallyandcollectively,andassumingleadershiprolesin
polity,economy,business,andeducation.Womencreatethemilestones(suchasgainingfemalesuffrage)inonecontextthatsetthe
benchmarkforwomeninothercommunities.Theseincrementalgainsparalleldevelopmentsinhumanrightsassociatedwithclassand
race.Thegeographicallyunevendismantlingofpatriarchalanddiscriminatorysocialstructuresandattitudesishighlightedin
historicalexamplesfromancienttimestothepresent.Humanrights,politics,health,economy,work,family,religion,education,
violence,andbodyimagearethekeydomainsexploredinthischaptertoillustratedisparateratesofprogresstowardgenderequity.It

istheconsequencesforwomenandgirls,andformenandboys,ofthisunequalhistorythatledtotheinternationalcallfortheUnited
NationsBeijingConferenceonWomenin1995andframedtheareasofconcerninitsPlatformforAction.Theremainingchallengesto
genderequitywerealsoakeyimpetusfortheMillenniumDevelopmentGoals(MDGs19902015)andtheSustainableDevelopment
Goals(SDGs20152030).Dramaticprogresshasbeenmadeinthepastcenturytowardgenderequityinmostfields,andinmany
countries,butfurtheropportunitiesexistforenhancementofphysical,emotional,andsocialwellbeingforbothwomenandmenofall
ages.Theseopportunitiesarehighlightedinthischapter.Currenttrendspointtoafutureofgreaterattentiontogenderrelationsinthe
incorporationofsubjectivewellbeingdataincommunity,national,andinternationalpolicyanddecisionmakingenhancedvisibility
andsocialinclusionformarginalizedwomenandashiftinresearchfocusandresourcesfromdevelopedtodevelopingcountries.
