Recommended Queue Depth Settings for G1000, G800, G600, G400,

G200

Question
What are the recommended queue depth settings for hosts attached to the G1000 and Gx00 arrays?

Environment
G1000
G800
G600
G400
G200

Answer
The G-Series Arrays have NO per PORT or per LUN queue depth limit. The only limit to queue depth is a limit of 64,000
QD per MPB. This limit is typically unreachable in any normal customer scenario. HDS recommends a default LUN
queue depth of 32 or 64 with G-Series Arrays. As a sizing guideline, we still recommend that the total queue depth to a
port is 2048 active QD in use. Customers in practice often have high LUN counts on ports with queue depths of 32 or 64
without any issue. If the Host OS or HBA defaults to 32 or 64 per LUN, our recommendation is to keep the default. If the
OS does not set a queue depth, or sets a queue depth below 32, the customer may want to set 32 as a first evaluation.

All flash, or flash heavy tiered workloads are often the only workloads to see any difference between 32 and 64. In most
customer environments, 32 provides a better throttle on fairness at the port between competing hosts, but 64 may
benefit a smaller count of large LUNs.
