From the 201314 academic session, the overall availability of MBBS seats in India rose to 42,169.
The health ministry is striving to achieve the target doctor-patient ratio of 1:1000 by 2021, which at
present is 1:2000. The government plans to increase overall availability of MBBS seats to 80,000
and of PG seats to 45,000 from the current 22,194 by 2021. The aim is to reduce the shortage of
doctors, which is currently pegged at around 800,000 (800,000).[2][3] India has 27 regional cancer
centres.400 RT machines are available for cancer treatment.[4]

The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (Amendment) Bill, 2012,was introduced in the Lok Sabha

on 27 August 2012. This bill will also replace a recent Ordinance which allowed the six AIIMS-like
institutes to become operational from September 2012.[6] Lok Sabha passed the AIIMS
(Amendment) Bill, 2012 on 30 August 2012.[7][8] The proposed measure will help the Centre
change the status of the six new AIIMS registered under the Indian Societies Registration Act to be
autonomous body corporate on the lines of the existing AIIMS in Delhi.AIIMS(Amendment) Bill,2012
was introduced in Rajya Sabha on 3 September 2012.[9][10] Rajya Sabha passed the AIIMS
(Amendment) Bill, 2012 on 4 September 2012.[11][12][13]

Future AIIMS [edit]

On March 8, 2003, while addressing the 32nd Convocation, deviating from the written speech APJ
Abdul Kalam, the former President of India asked to develop AIIMS like Institutions in other part of
country linked with AIIMS Delhi. Sushma Swaraj the then Health Minister presiding the convocation
as President of AIIMS said that 6 AIIMS will be started shortly.[14]

In 2009, the government had further decided to set up AIIMS-like institutes at Rae Bareli in Uttar
Pradesh and at Raiganj in West Bengal, now the institute to come up at Kalyani which is 50
Kilometers away from Kolkata instead of Raiganj which is 400 Kilometers away from Kolkata.

In July 2014, the Government of India has given approval for setting up four new AIIMS which are
be come up in Nagpur (Maharashtra), Hyderabad (Telangana), Gorakhpur (Uttar Pradesh),
Mangalagiri (Andhra Pradesh)[15] and Kalyani (West Bengal).[16][17]

On 28 February 2015, seven more AIIMS were announced to be set up in Punjab, Tamil Nadu,
Himachal Pradesh, 2 in Jammu and Kashmir, Assam and Bihar.

On 20 July 2016, The funding 10 billion (US$150 million), for AIIMS Gorakhpur was cleared by
the Union Cabinet under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY).[18]

AIIMS Delhi Extension (Jhajjar) [edit]

The second campus of AIIMS New Delhi (AIIMS-II), spread over 330 acre's of land was visualized
during tenure of Prof. T D Dogra as Director AIIMS New Delhi and Dr. Ambumani
Ramadoss(President AIIMS), Minister of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India in 2009
at Badhsa village in Haryana`s Jhajjar district. AIIMS-II is to be developed as the largest Medical
Education centre for super-specialities in the World.[32] Its beginning was launched on 30 May
2012. It is being built at a cost of 10 billion (US$150 million).[33][34][35] Union Health Minister
Ghulam Nabi Azad inaugurated Outreach OPD of AIIMS on 24 November 2012.[36][37]IIT Delhi is

also planning to set up an extension near the proposed AIIMS.The new campus will be
collaborating with AIIMS in the fields of Biological Science, Pharmacology and Chemical
Engineering.[38] Government is also planning to open National Cancer Institute within the campus
of AIIMS Jhajjar.[39]
