500 Words
Hopefully the children have lots of ideas for stories to write for the 500
Words competition that they have been discussing over the past
couple of weeks. The competition closes in the week after half term,
so some ideal revision (for those taking exams) and great practise for
those who are looking for a writing activity, would be to write a short
story to enter into the competition! All the details are online at:
www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p00rfvk1 including the online submission
form and consent details.
When children enter a story, please could they print out a copy for Mrs
Beach, or email one to her at sbeach@tockingtonmanorschool.com.
She would love to read them all!

WORLD BOOK WEEK Monday 27th February Friday 3rd March
We have lots of exciting activities planned for the week a chance to celebrate books, reading and the
enjoyment of the written word.
Monday 27th February - Hannah Shaw author visit. Hannah has written and illustrated many books, ranging
from picture books, to chapter books.

Hannah will be leading workshops with all of the year groups at school; talking about her work and
explaining where her inspiration comes from. We will have copies of Hannahs books for sale at school and
she will be happy to sign them for the children, if they would like her to do so. Hannahs website has lots
more information about her books: http://hannahshawillustrator.co.uk/
Wednesday 1st March Sibal Pounder visit to school. Sibal worked as a researcher and writer for the
Financial Times; interviewing everyone from designer Vivienne Westwood to director Sam Taylor-Wood.
Now she writes about fabulous witches and feisty fairies in her debut series, Witch Wars.

Sibal will be speaking to years 3-6 about her novels and will focus on character
building in creative writing. Sibals books will be available for purchase on the day and
she too will be willing to sign books. Sibals website has more information about this
series: http://www.sibealpounder.com/the-blog
Thursday 2nd March World Book Day. If the children would like to dress up as a book
character, we would love to see their costumes! We encourage them to come in
costume, bringing the book that the character is in. During assembly we can all enjoy
looking at the range of characters that have come to school!

Friday 3rd March Travelling Books book fair comes to school. Brochures highlighting some of the books
available will be coming home after half term. Each child will also have a 1 World Book Day voucher to
spend. The book fair will be in school for a week and available for children at the end of each day. Children
should be taken to the book fair with their parents. Boarders will have the opportunity of shopping at the fair
when Mrs Beach will supervise their purchases!

Books by Hannah Shaw and Sibal Pounder will only be available on the days that they are in school.
Any children wishing to buy their books (and have them signed) should bring in cash in a named purse or
envelope. In Lower School this money should be given to the form teacher for safe keeping.

E-SAFETY ASSEMBLY
For Safer Internet Day 2017, Year 6 took an assembly on the dangers associated with the
internet and gave us some important messages to remember and follow.

Showcasing the work they had produced during their lessons, the Year 6 class acted out a
game show going over the do's and don'ts of:

Social networking
Online Gaming
Uploading video or any personal info
Email

We then watched a short video which highlighted the dangers of social media and the
compromising positions children can very easily land themselves in when using social media.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_o8auwnJtqE

We highlighted the need to look closely at privacy settings, report any abuse or suspicious
activity, and think very careful before posting anything to any social media sites.
