Foreword

When I was a teenager I remember thinking, "What stories will I tell my

children that will make me seem old-fashioned?" I wondered for years
and then it happened: the internet. It didn't arrive until I was
seventeen years old and even then it was dial-up. "Oh, dad, you're so
ancient!", they'll say, as they roll their eyes.

Suddenly, my computer went from being an overpriced paperweight to

being a magic window onto the world. What I soon realized is that it
looked out on a world brimming with deserving causes. When I opened
the window I'd I see a hailstorm of worthy charities and projects that
could put my donations to good use. I felt the urge to help, but I was
overwhelmed by it all. "You can't do everything," I'd say to myself,
close the window and walk away.

Then I discovered Ukuleles For Peace. I was in my early twenties and

UFP was just what I was looking for: ukulele, politics and good people
making a difference. Since then I've had the pleasure of meeting Paul
Moore and learning more about the history of UFP, its mission, its trials
and its triumphs. My admiration for the project has only increased over
the years.

As the worldwide ukulele community grows, so too does our ability to

affect change socially, musically, and politically. Buying this book puts
you one step closer to the front line, one step closer to the crest of
ukulele's Third Wave, where history is being made. The mighty uke,
indeed!

Thanks for supporting a great project and thank you to Paul Moore and
his team for showing us just what the ukulele can be: an instrument of
joy, change, and hope. Uke on!

Introduction

Greetings Ukulele Players.

Once again, good people have come together and found the time to
put together another wonderful eBook to help us all become better
ukers. Not only that, they have done it for Ukuleles For Peace.

A big thank you to everyone who has donated their time and effort to
this book, especially Ken, who has done a wonderful job bringing it all
together and making it happen.

UFP has been going now for over 7 years and is still growing and
incorporating more communities here in Israel. Since moving to the
Galilee 2 years ago, it has been harder keeping the group going in the
center in Hod Hasharon and Tira. However, with the help of good
peoples donations, we are keeping this branch going. I have always
planned on taking the message of UFP to other areas in Israel and I am
working now to start up a group here in the Galilee. With the help of
funds raised through this book, I hope we will be able to grow and help
the poorer communities here experience the power of the ukulele as a
means to bring people together.

I am writing this now from Finland where I have been playing at a major
ukulele festival and also talking about UFP . Ukulele players are
wonderful people, always with open hearts. Together, I hope we can all
bring more joy, happiness and, of course, the peace which all the
people of the Earth so desperately need.

Projects like this eBook and the help of friends of UFP inspire us and
enable us to continue, even when times are hard in Israel.

Right now I am in the middle of building a home here in the Galilee

Mountains. The Last Homely House will also be a place for ukulele

4
players from all over the world to come and visit, and, if they wish, to
help in the work of UFP . When the house is completed, I plan to have
the first gathering of international ukulele players in Israel.

Thank you so much for supporting us through this book.

Please feel free to contact me about the work of Ukuleles For Peace.

Peace be with us all.

I would love to turn up at the United Nations and

just simply play our music to them as a statement
of what is possible. Words seem to only divide,
whereas music unites us all in harmony.
