LECTURE ON CASE ANALYSIS METHODOLOGY

How do you proceed in solving a Case Study? Read the given case study once,
twice or thrice and then reflect on it. Analyze the case study by preparing or performing
the following step by step procedure:

1. STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

2. ANALYSIS
3. ALTERNATIVE COURSES OF ACTION
4. RECOMMENDED SOLUTION AND RATIONALE
5. IMPLEMENTATION

These steps are explained are explained below:

The following are the components of a case analysis:

1. STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM should focus on the identification of the issue

or concern that needs to be addressed. This should have enough background to
establish the condition or situation that need to be addressed.

Short term and long term problems should be identified whenevernecessary. The
statement of the problem could be stated as a question that could be answered
by a set of Alternative Courses of Action (#3).

2. ANALYSIS should enumerate problems concerning the project. In details, it will

enumerate problems about the facts that are pertinent to the problematic
situation, and the factors that will affect the course of action to take in order to
address the problem. This section should also contain any assumption being
made regarding the case.

3. ALTERNATIVE COURSES OF ACTION should enumerate as many alternatives

available. As alternative, the status quo will always address the questions being
asked in the statement of the problem. In addition to the status quo, there should
be at least two (2) or more alternatives. Grading will be based on the quality of
the alternatives rather than quality.

4. RECOMMENDED SOLUTION AND RATIONALE should contain the

arguments/reasons for choosing the recommended alternative course of action.
Short term and long term solutions should be determined whenever applicable.

5. IMPLEMENTATION will contain how the solution will be implemented. This is a

step-by-step plan of action on how to implement the solution, including conditions
or constraints for the implementation.
