A knyv clja, hogy segtsget nyjtson mindazoknak, akik az angol nyelvet magn, vagy
hivatalos levelezsek kapcsn a mindennapi letben hasznljk, illetve azoknak, akik a levelezs
nyelvezett az alap-, vagy a kzpfok nyelvvizsgra val kszlsk sorn most
tanulmnyozzk.
knyv felptse teht a kvetkezkppen alakul:
Mint lthat teht, a knyv minden szinten a felmerl leggyakoribb levelezsi problmk
megoldshoz kvn segtsget nyjtani.
Mind a magn, mind pedig a hivatalos leveleket tartalmaz fejezetek elejn magyarul
olvashatunk rvid tjkoztatt az adott levltpusokkal kapcsolatos ltalnos szablyokrl. Az
alap-, illetve kzpfok levelezsi feladatok megfogalmazsa teljesen megegyezik a

(Angol alap- s kzpfok)
FEJLC
A felad cmt ktflekppen rhatjuk a jobb fels sarokba:
A cm sorrendje teht a kvetkez: hzszm, utca neve, vros/falu, megye, postai irnytszm,
esetleg az orszg. A sorok vgn lev vessz elhagyhat, csakgy, mint a megye neve utni pont.
A rvidtsek utn viszont nha elfordul, hogy pontot tesznek.
A 'Street' s a 'Road' szavak rvidthetk, mgpedig 'St' illetve 'Rd' formban.
A dtumot egy sort kihagyva rjuk a cm al. Lehetsges varicik:'

MEGSZLTS
A megszltst a baloldali marg mell, vagy ahhoz kzel rjuk s utna mindig vesszt tesznk..
Barti levlben a szinte kizrlagos megszltsi lehetsg a kvetkez:
Dear Judy,
My dear Judy,
A LEVL SZVEGE
A levl tartalma ltalban hrom knnyen
elhatrolhat rszre oszthat:
a. bevezets;
b. trgyals (clok megnevezse, hrek kzlse);
c. befejezs.
a. bevezets
A bevezets rendszerint vagy egy korbbi levlre, vagy egy olyan esemnyre val utalssal
kezddik, amely a levlrst kivltotta. Ennek megfelelen a leggyakoribb angollevlkezdsi
kifejezsek a kvetkezk:
I have just received your letter and I ppen most kaptam meg a leveledet

b. trgyals
Ez a mennyisg alapfok nyelvvizsga esetn 6-8, kzpfok nyelvvizsga sorn pedig 15-20 sor

c. befejezs

BCSZS
Barti levlben a tnyleges befejezsre, bcszsra hasznlt leggyakoribb kifejezsek a
kvetkezk:
A bcszs a levl befejezse alatt egy sort kihagyva kezddik ltalban a margtl kiss jobbra,
de lehet kzvetlenl melette, vagy kzpen is. A bcszsban az els szt mindig nagy betvel

ALRS
Az alrst szintn egy sort kihagyva rjuk a bcszs al, vagy attl egy kicsit jobbra. Ez barti
levlben rendszerint a keresztnv, vagy annak beczett vltozata.
UTIRAT
Ha a levlbl valamit kifelejtettnk, vagy a levl megrsa utn jut tudomsunkra, akkor 'P.S.'
baloldali sorkezds utn kvetkezhet rviden a mondanivalnk. Tovbbi utiratokat 'P.P.S.'-szel

A BORTK

Dear John,
Perhaps you would be interested to know that we managed to move to another fiat! house
after alI. The whole family is very happy about it, because it's a lot bigger than the old one
and it's also in a much nicer area.
The new fiat is in a semi-detached house/ Our new house is a suburban bungalow/ and
there is a small/ big garden around it. The kitchen, the dining-room and the hall are
downstairs, the bathroom and the bedrooms are upstairs. There's also a garage at the side of
the house so we won't have to park our car in the street any longer.
I must say good-bye to you now because I still have some things to fix up in my room. I am
going to write alonger letter when I have more time.
Love and best wishes,

DearTom,
Thank you so much for your last letter in which you ask me about my school.
Well, as I said, I go to an academic grammar school, which I started at the age of 14 and
will probably finish at 18. The standard of teaching is quite high in grammar schools in
Hungary, that's why most students who would like to go on to university study in such
schools. We mainly have arts and science subjects here as opposed to secondary technical
and vocational schools, where students also learn a trade.
Howare things with you? Have you thought about what to become yet? What types of
secondary schools are there in Britain and what is your schoollike?
Tell me all about it and please write again soon.
Yours,
Csilla

Dear Carl,
Thank you for your letter, which I have just received. H'S really very thoughtful of you to
ask me about my eating habits.
To tell you the truth, I am not at alI choosy, I do eat everything I get. For breakfast I usually
have /rolls with butter and jam/ cornflakes with milk/ scrambled eggs/ sausages and tea. I
never eat anything untillunch, which is always a hot meal, but I could also do with some
cold snacks. I never have a big dinner, just some cold cuts and some fruit to follow.
As you can see I don't make much fuss of my meals so please don't worry about my diet.
Thanks for your concern again. I hope to see you soon.

I really am very happy to see you soon in my home. There is just one minor thing left that I
would like to ask you about and this is food. My mother is eager to know what she should
prepare for your first dinner in Hungary.
She is very good at making soups, especialIy vegetablel meatl fish soup. Then for the
second course we could have roast beefl pork chopsl veal cutlets and for dessert she
recommends pancakes. If you prefer vegetables to meat she could make you some delicious
salads, or if you have a sweet tooth she'lI bake you a cake.
Don't forget to write by return post and let us know what you would prefer to have.
Lots of love,

I have just leamt from your letter that your father has been taken to hospital. I'm desperate
to tell you how sorry I am and hope that it's not very serious.
When did it actually start? What symptoms did he have? Are you sure that he'll have to be
operated on or can medication help? How long do you think he'll have to stay in and when
do the doctors say he'll fully recover by?
Please, remember me to him and tell him that I wish him a quick recovery. I do hope that

Dear Jenny,
I have just received your letter and I'm absolutely delighted to hear that you will be able to
come and see us at Easter.
Usually spring weather in Hungary is quite nice but you can never count with certainty on
really warm weather in April. It is unpredictable so it may rain or there may be beautiful
sunshine. The temperatures can also range from 10 to 25 degrees so I think you should
bring both warm and light clothes with you. What I usually wear in April is a pair of
trousers/ a long skirt, a T-shirt/ a light blouse and a sweater/ windcheater/ jacket. Whatever
the weather will be like I'm sure weIll enjoy ourselves.
We are alI looking forward to seeing you soon.

I'm writing to you to tell you that I've taken up a new sport. You know I did the high jump

Now I'm playing basketball and I must tell you I prefer it to high jumping. I can't wait to go

not alone, you play in a team and, if you are good enough, you can even score for this team.
That's what I call real pleasure.

I've just returned from a class outing in one of the most beautifui parts of the country and I

It was a two-day trip; we did Veszprm on the first day and went on a hiking tour in the
Bakony Hills on the second. We saw all the exhibitionsl museums and the famous sightsl
landmarks and had a lovely dinner in a restaurant in the old part of the town.
We were very lucky with the weather. Although it was a bit windy in the beginning, we had

I'm writing to ask you for some advice: my husband and I are getting very worried about
our son, Tom.
He used to be such a nice boy but recently he has been staying out late at night and is
always too tired to do weIl at school. He spends alI his time with greasy-haired, tight-

Most of the boys at this age play a decent sport. And what do you think my son loves

but he has several.
We used to get on very weIl with each other, he always listened to our warnings and

I know you also had some problems when your son was a teenager.
What did you do about it? If you could give us some advice it would be very welcome. I

Give my love to Charles and the children.

We met five weeks ago at a party. It was love at first sight - I feel as ifI have known her all
my life. We share so many things; she loves travelling and languages just like me. She is

wedding reception. So an invitation to the wedding will reach you very soon. I do hope you
will be able to come.

Dear Linda and Terry,
As agreed in our telephone conversation the day before yesterday, here are the instructions
for what to do when you arrive at the house.
First of alI collect the keys from the neighbour. The largest key is for the gate, the two
smaller ones are for the garage and the main entrance door.
When you enter the house, the mains electricity switch is clearly marked on the wall right
in front of you, opposite the entramce door. In order to connect the water supply, tum on
the large blue tap, which you will find in the cellar, right undemeath the stairs.
Feel free to use any of the household appliances and kitchen utensils you want. I'm sure
you'll have no trouble in finding them. The only exception is perhaps the iron, which I keep
in the big wardrobe in the living-room. Note that the washing machine is not in the kitchen
but in the bathroom. It's an old type machine so it can be a bit tricky if you are not used to
it. The dials are on the top and I'llleave the instructions right next to them.
Some of the plants are on the balcony and we usually water them in the moming before the
sun comes round. The others are inside and it's enough to water them twice a week.
Before leaving the house make sure that all the switches and taps are tumed off and the
windows and doors are securely locked. And please remember to return the keys to the
neighbour!
Well, have a lovely time and phone me if I have forgotten about something important.
Yours sincerely,
Margit

Dear Debbie,
I'm writing to you to tell you some good news. We managed to change our fiat for a
detached house. At long last! You know how long I've been waiting for this moment.
The house is in a very nice place - just outside the town, on the edge of a smalllake. H'S an
old house, but it's in quite good condition and with some reconsruction and redecoration
we'll make it very comfortable.
There is a big garden around it with old chestnut and almond trees. Just what I have always
dreamt of. In the back of the garden we have a small outbuilding, which could be turned
into a garage later.
There's a lot to be done inside the house too. The walls need papering, the windows and the
doors need repainting and weIll have to have some tiles fixed on the bathroom walls. We
would also like to have the hall and the living-room made into one large room.
In fact we have plenty of spare room, so why don't you and John come and stay with us for
a week or two?
Just let us know when to expect you.
Yours,
Rka

Dear Allan,
I was interested to hear that a friend of yours is coming to Hungary to teach English in a
secondary grarnmar school. I want to quickly write to you about everything she needs to
know.
The school year in Hungary is devided into two terms; the first term begins in September
and finishes right before Christmas and the second term begins on one of the first days of
January and finishes in the middie of June. Then alI the schools break up for the long
summer holidays, which last for almost three months.
The lessons in grammar schools usually start at 8 o'clock in the morning. Each lesson lasts
for 45 minutes and there are about six lessons a day. On the average teachers have 18
lessons a week.
28 MAGNLEVELEK KZPFOKON
There has been great emphasis put on language teaching recently and secondary school
students have to opt for two foreign languages to study and these are usually English and
German. In bigger schools they can also learn French, Italian or Spanish.
,
The school sends a report to the parents with grades in every subject at the end of each
term. The final grades are based on the teacher's continuous assessment in class. Hungarian
secondary schools are quite strict and competitive therefore there are very few discipline
problems. The students are already used to having native speakers as their teachers, so she
shouldn't worry about this. I'm sure she'lI get on very weIl with most ofthem.
WeIl, I hope I've remembered everything, but if I haven't, please write again and ask any
questions you've got. Please, tell your friend that I wish her success in her future job.
Sincerely yours,
Gerg

Dear Daniel,
Now that the new school year began I decided to change certain things in my life, which I
would like to share with you. In fact I have made some new year resolutions, I mean new
school year resolutions.
This year I will be more attentive in the lessons and 1'11 study a lot more in the afternoons. I
want to be more effective than I was last year so 1'11 do alI my homework and I won't ever
play truant from school.
We've got some new teachers from different parts ofthe country. They alI seem to be very
kind but strict and want us to study hard. I decided to make a very good first impression on
each of them because - as you may weIl know - you'l1 never get a second chance to make
the first impression. Actually, I want to be very polite to alI the teachers in the school and
avoid quarrels with any of my classmates.
I also swore that I would try to avoid the big rush at the end of the term by starting to
prepare for the final tests weIl in advance. This is a question of managing my time
properly, which I haven't been very good at for the past few years.
Now that I've told you alI about it I feel that 1'11 be able to do it. Why don't you try to folIow
my example? You have no idea how much I am looking forward to hearing your opinion
about the whole thing.
I hope to have a letter from you before long.
Love,

Dear Frank,
You may be surprised to hear that I've changed my job, but I'm sure you'll understand when
you find out about my reasons.
You know I worked as a teacher of English and German for ten years and I was quite happy
doing it in the beginning. But then I realized that I don't ever have any free time and my
salary was lower than anybody else's in the family.
Some time ago I got an advantageous offer from the manager of a big company so I
decided to take the chance. Now I'm a sales manager and I enjoy my work more than I
would ever have thought. I work with three other colleagues in the department who seem to
be quite easy to get on with. I travel a lot and not only within Hungary but also to different
parts of Europe and have talks in English or sometimes German.
I work flexitime and my salary is almost three times as much as what I used to get as a
teacher. I may be appointed divisional head, which would mean an additional rise in pay.
I would very much like to hear your opinion about my decision. Did I do it right? Please let
me know what you think about it. 1'11 be looking forward to your letter.
Yours sincerely,
Ott

Dear Pam,
You asked me about the recipe of the dish I made you for lunch on the very last day ofyour
stay in our home. I'm overjoyed to hear that you did like it so much that you want your
colleagues to taste it. Oh, I had a lovely time when you were here, did you?
So, beef stew is really very simple to make. eut the onions into cubes, braise them in oil
and sprinkle some hot paprika on them. Do you get real hot paprika in England or shall I
send some to you? Now, add the cubed beef then some tomatoes, green pepper and salt
according to taste. We like it quite salty. The stew is usually served with boiled potatoes or
noodles.
Mind you, this dish is quite greasy and spicy, which most English people don't really like.
Why don't you try something that is also typically Hungarian but a lot healthier.
30 MAGNLEVELEK KZPFOKON
What would you say to some paprika chicken or pancakes Hortobgy style? Or perhaps
noodles with cottage cheese, sour cream and bits of bacon? Do you remember? You had
thema11 when you were here.
If you should change your mind just drop me a line and 1'11 send any recipe you want.
Good luck with the cooking!
Love,
Jane

Dear Kevin,
H's only yesterday that I got back from you but I feel I must write immediately to thank you
for the warm welcome I got from you and your family.
I'm sure I will always remember the wonderful days I spent there and the beautifui places
we visited together.
Actua11y, what came as a complete surprise to me was English food. I would never have
thought that it was so delicious and I couldn't help eating a lot more than I do at home.
Your lovely puddings are simply unforgettable! There's so much variety and there's fmit in
most of them, which is very much to my taste. And the way you prepare turkey! So tender
and juicy and never too greasy. I'm afraid 1'11 have to go on a slimming diet till I get a bit
slimmer.
I do hope that 1'11 be able to retum your hospitality some time in the near future. I can't
thank you enough for your kindness.

Dear Jenny,
I was very pleased to receive your letter yesterday. I'm writing to you by return post and
hope that I can give you some ideas for your Christmas shopping.
In Hungary there's a great rush in the shops before Christmas; everybody is trying to buy
something for their relatives. Big stores have sales and they are open alI day, even at the
weekends. Still it's really difficult to find the right present for everyone.
I can understand how you feel, because it took me several days to find something only for
my parents. My father will get an electric razor because he lost the old one when we went
skiing in the mountains last month. Has your father got one? If he has, why don't you buy
some shaving foam and an after shave lotion for him? They always come handy for a man.
My mother will get a lovely scarf with fringes. She's been wanting one for years. Women
like alI kinds of accessories. If she already has a scarf try to find her a nice belt, a pair of
gloves or some nice jewellery. I haven't bought anything for my brother yet. I might just get
him some chocolate. A lot of chocolate. He loves sweets.
I hope you'll also find the right presents after alI.
We alI send our love to you and we wish the whole family a very Merry Christmas.
Yours,
Rita

Dear Steve,
I'm writing to tell you about the accident I had the other day. Don't worry, nothing very
serious. I just broke my leg.
I was driving on a minor road which was still quite snowy. So the car slipped in a bend and
swerved into a ditch by the road. I know it was my fault, I was not careful enough. Luckily,
there were no other cars on the road.
At first I got frightened because my knee was bleeding heavily and I couldn't move my
right leg. But soon the ambulance came and I was taken to the casualty department. I got a
bandage on my knee and my leg was put in plaster. Before setting the fracture they gave me
a local anaesthetic. They say it will take at least six weeks before the bone heals.
32 MAGNLEVELEK KZPFOKON
We are six in a ward and almost everybody has a bone fracture here. The nurses are very
kind but the food is awful. Have you ever tasted hospital food? If you have, you know how
tasteless it is.
My days here are terribly boring. The only thing I can do is read. At least this is sornething
I enjoy but you can't do it for days on end, can you?
I hope everybody is alI right in your family. Do write soon and let me know how you are
gerting on.

Dear Keith,
I must apologize for not writing to you for so long but I've just got over a serious illness.
I had lost my appetite and I had had sharp pains for over half a year when, finally, our
family doctor decided to send me to hospital for a medical check-up. There they diagnosed
stornach ulcer and soon I got operated on for it. Fortunately the operation was successful
and I was soon discharged from hospital.
Now I'm lying at home recuperating. I'm still not allowed to do any hard work although I'm
alI right now and feel that I could do some. The doctors say I need a lot of rest. You can
imagine what a difficult situation we've been in. The sickness benefit is a lot less than my
salary so we can hardly manage to live on that money. Anyway, I hope 1'11 fully recover in

some weeks' time and can start work again.
I look forward to hearing from you.

Dear Lucy,
I was delighted to hear that since you took up gymnastics you have been fee1ing really fine
and fit.
To tell you the truth this little piece of news impressed me a lot. I realized I had been
leading an extremely unhealthy way of life. I virtually don't move apart from the
housework I do in the flat. Can you imagine? I go everywhere by car, even to work!
When I read your letter I decided to do physical jerks for 10 minutes every moming and go
jogging for a quarter of an hour every evening. And that's not alI yet. I love watching those
skiers on television. So I thought to myse1f: why couldn't I try that? It should be great hm!
And then there's swimming. I know how to swim, so why don't I ever go to the swimming
pool? From now on I will.
You know when I was young I did gymnastics for four years. God knows why I gave it up.
Then carne running. I was a sprinter. I often went to competitions and won quite a few
medals. I can't really explain to you why Iturned into a couch potato.
Anyway, thanks a lot for your advice. I hope 1'11 be able to live up to my resolutions. 1'11
write to you about it in more detaillater.

You are asking me about the weather we have in the different seasons especially during the
time that you'll spend in our country. WeIl, August is always very hot; actuaIly, it's stifling

some shorts and T-shirts, that'll do for the end of summer and even the beginning of
autumn. Remember your bikini, you might want to go down to the beach.
The rest of autumn is trickier; you can never know what to count on in October and
November. UsuaIly, the latter is quite cold already. More often than not we have frosts,
slippery roads and even snow. Last year, for example, we skied in the nearby mountains in

DearNancy,
I know it's a long time since I last wrote to you but don't think this means that I've forgotten
you.
Actually, I had been quite busy until very recently when I finally found some time to go to
the cinerna. I saw an excellent English film entitled 'Room With A View'. I know it's an
adaptation of a book written by Foster, which I would very much like to read.
Now, there's somethimg I would like you to do for me, if you don't mind. I wonder whether
you could buy that book and send it to my home address. I would be really grateful to you
if you could help me with this.
You know there're so few good films today because most of them are either crime or horror
stories. They are full of violence and aggression, which I can't tell you how much I hate.
The saddest thing about it is that this is what you get on TV as weIl. My children always
have the telly on and watch these absolutely stupid programmes for hours on end.
Unfortunately, there's not much variety on the Hungarian channels and the satellite
channels are even worse. Just imagine a generation growing up on this rubbish.
How about television programmes in England? Are they of any higher standard?
I'm looking forward to your answer. I hope I'm not causing you much trouble with that
book.
Thank you in advance.

Dear Pat,
I am very pleased to hear that your parents intend to spend their holiday in Hungary. There
are so many beautifuI places here that it is difficult to choose the most idea!.
My own choice would be Lake Balaton and of course the capital city. The Balaton area is
really inviting, especially in summer. There are long grassy beaches and nice little bays
with white-sailed boats. Forest covered hills rise on the northern shore with vineyards and
orchards on their slopes. By the way, once they are there it's a must to taste some of the
Balaton wines. There are castIes, caves and picturesque little towns and villages in the
surrounding area.
The people in the region like to let their houses to foreigners, so they can either choose this
kind of accomodation or stay in one of the lovely hotels that are scattered alI over the place.
Budapest, the capital city, is another must that your parents shouldn't miss. If I were in yor
parents' place I would definitely visit all the main historic monuments that the city is
famous for and I would also go to some of the many thermal baths that are so popular with
the tourists.
I am enclosing a map, some folders and information sheets about accomodation. Please, let
me know when they are coming. I would like to call on them and show them some
interesting places myself. Can't you possibly manage to come with them?

Ami

Dear David,
I can't tell you how delighted I was when I got your letter. H was very kind of you to answer
my letter so quickly. I was pleased to hear about you, your family and your hobbies.
I'm also interested in corresponding with students of my age from different parts of the
world. This way I can learn so much about their homelands and their lifestyles. H's both
enjoyable and useful, because I can improve my English in the meantime.
I also like reading books in my free time. I love fiction and I read a lot of poetry. My
favourite poet is J. Pilinszky, whose short, 5-10 lined verses especially appeal to me.
What kinds of books do you enjoy reading in you spare time? Whose books do you
especially like? Have you got a favourite band or piece of music?
As for me, I'm not particularly keen on music, although I played the violin for four years.
The kind of music that I often listen to these days is basicaIly light pop music. I've got
some favourite bands at the moment, but this always changes. Now Ilike the songs by
Guns and Roses and Stiltskin. If you should come across any photos of them could you
send them to me? I would be really grateful.
In the rest of my free time I love keeping company, going out and having fun. I've got quite
a few friends, which I'm very happy about. In this, I think, I take after my father.
How about you, David? Do you like making friends? I'm very eager to hear from you, so
please, write me as soon as you can.

Dear Fiona,
In your last letter you asked me to write you about Hungary, her location and climate.
Well, Hungary is a lovely little country in Central Europe bordered by Austia in the west,
Slovakia in the north, the Ukraine and Romania in the east and the successor states of the
former Yugoslavia in the south.
Unfortunately, we are not a coastal country, but we have a beautifui lake called Balaton,
which is the largest freshwater lake in Central Europe. H's in the west of Hungary, in a nice
hilly area. Otherwise, we don't have high mountains; the highest peak, in the north of the
country, is j'list ~ver 1,000 inetres.' ... ' ..
The eastern region is level and it's called 'The Great Hungarian Plain'. H'S a rich source of
experience for those who want to learn about Hungary's past and traditional village life.
Wouldn't it be nice to visit all these places together some time? Especially in spring or at
the beginning of summer when the weather is not yet awfully hot.
By the way, we are having a heat-wave right now and it's more than 30 degrees. Actually,
it's quite normal in summer, and usually it doesn't last longer than two or three weeks.
Since we are in the temperate zone, we don't have really extreme weather conditions. In
winter it can drop to minus 15-20 but rarely does it go below that.
I have heard that in America you have tomadoes, torrential rains and floods in some parts
of the country and droughts in other parts. I would be very interested to hear a bit more
about it.
I'm looking forward to your answer.
Yours',
Zsolt

Dear Al,
Thanks a lot for your letter. It was nice to hear that you have become so interested in
Hungary and her people. Now 1'11 try to summarize the most important things in a few
sentences.
Our ancestors settled down in the Carpathian Basin more than a thousand years ago. There
are at present about ten million Hungarians living in this area, within the borders of the
country. Contrary to what most people think Hungarian is not a Slavonic, but a Finno-
Ugrian language and they say it's very difficult to learn.
Hungarians are known to be a hospitable nation. They say we are kind and sociable and
like to invite people to our homes to serve them good food and drinks. Perhaps the fact that

Dear Gary,
Thank you for your letter full of so many questions about how people live in this part of the
world. You also asked me about the political system of Hungary. You seem to be really
interested in the way things go over here.
I'm sure you know that Hungary has been a republic for some time now. Actually, she
became one in 1989 after more than forty years of socialism.
It was a fairly conservative, centre right-wing party that won the first free elections in 1990,
but four years later the people of Hungary voted for the socialists again. It doesn't mean
that they wanted the return of socialism, it just means that they would have liked to fee1
socially more secure than they did during the first four years of democracy. The truth is that
the people of Hungary are not used to the harsh laws of capitalism. They want both
capitalism and social security. But, unfortunately, the country is far too poor to reach this
stage ovemight.
Despite the fact that apart from the normal 40-hour week, most of us have second, and
sometimes third jobs, we are still doing better than the countries around us. To the south of
our borders there are ethnic wars, to the east there is galloping inflation and extremely
difficult living conditions, and the new country to the north of us, Slovakia, is also
struggling hard with all the hardships of change.
We have always been in the forefront of these changes and hopefully things will pick up
soon. Just fee1 free to ask me about anything you want to hear more about. I am looking
forward to your letter.
Yours sincerely,
Laci .,

Dear Julie,
"
Thank you so much for your letter. Sorry, I haven't written to you earlier, but I've been
really busy studying for the exams.
Now things are getting a bit more quiet and so I have a little more time for other things,
like writing to you. First of all the great news: I managed to pass all my exams with quite
good results. I think I deserved it. I had been studying really hard.
I haven't got any definite plans for the summer yet. All I know is that I would like to go
somewhere by the sea with my friend. But I haven't told my mother about it yet.
Actually, my mother is not very weIl these days. She complains of strong pains in her small
of the back. I have told her several times to go to the doctor's, but she won't. She says she
doesn't want to go on sick leave and that the pain will wear off by itself.
What else has happened? My father has just returned from a business trip in Prague and I
think he has fallen in love with the city. He says it's a maze of beautifui buildings and it has
a nice historic atmosphere. What I don't like about my father is that he travels so much that
he never has time to sit down and talk to me. I don't really have great problems, but very
often I just miss his presence.
44 DIKLEVELEZS
My brother, who is only 14 now, would need him even more than I do. He is not doing
particularly well at school and he would need a lot of prodding. The other day he got a one
in Maths and father doesn't even know about it. I understand that he has to earo money to
keep the family, but is it worth it?
For my part, Istill devote most of my free time to handball. I go to work-outs every other
afternoon and there are the matches at the weekends. I wouldn't mind spending so much of
my time on it, if our team were doing weIl. But it's not. You know there's a certain
satisfaction which you get from the feeling of success, but if you are always beaten you
lose confidence after a while. And without confidence there's no sport. So I'm seriously
considering giving it up for good. What do you think?
Now I'm sitting in my room and looking at the rain pouring down. We haven't had really
warm weather this summer yet. Actually, it's been quite cool and wet. They say it's good
for the crops, because the soil is extremely dry due to that long period of very little rain
we've had for the last few years.
No more news for the moment. Write soon and let me know about what's going on around
you these days.
Lots of love,
Ildik

I'm sure you'll enjoy yourself because we have a weekend cottage near Lake Balaton and

Dear Fred,
Thank you very much for your kind invitation to England. Although we would love to

One reason is because Istill don't know if I could get away from the office. I know I really

The other thing is that this summer we must have the whole fiat done up. We can't put it

I am writing to you to apologise for my early leave from the last session of the further
training course for teachers of English.
I hope I did not miss out on much as it was approaching the end anyway.
I must tell you that I enjoyed alI the sessions very much and I was happy to have taken part
in them. What I especially appreciated was the way you made us work so consistently,.but
still tactfully.
I hope you did not put down the low attendance in the last session to the level of the
course. I certainly believe that the course was very well-prepared and it was of enormous
help for those who took it seriously. To the best of my knowledge the low attendance was
due to the fact that the final session had had to be put off unti! such a late date and also
because some of us had failed to devote as much time to the course as it would have been
desirable.
I am fully conviced that there should be more courses like this for Hungarian teachers of
English. I, personally, would also like to attend courses in language testing and curriculum
design.
I wish you a pleasant stay in Hungary and look forward to seeing you again.
Yours sincerely,

Dear Sir,
On printing my letter on the 'Fate of Marriages in Hungary' on July 12 I notice that you
omitted some paragraphs.
I appreciate that some shortening or abridgement of articles is often necessary, and that in
this case the points.left out may at first sight appear to be minor ones.
However in the opinion of those who have studied the subject thoroughiy the statement I
made in the third paragraph is, in fact, of considerable importance. After dealing with the
reasons of divorce I wrote that the Hungarian legal system seems to favour the mother as
far as the custody ofthe children is concemed. The father, who is deprived ofhis home and
family, becomes dpressed and quite often tums to alcohoI. I do want to emphasize that this
is most unfair especially in cases when it is not the father who is to blame for the divorce.
I wonder how it fits in with the legal procedures in other European countries, but if it does
not; I find this fact all the more important to point out.
I would be grateful if you would include - if not all, - but at least some parts of the above
mentioned paragraph in the article in order to make this issue clear to European readers.
y ours faithfully,
. Vendel Fldesi

I am writing to ask you if it is possible for me to work with a different family in future.
Although my present family is really kind I am expected to do too much work. Apart from
cooking I clean the whole house and occasionally I am asked to do the shopping. On top of
aU this I have three impertinent children to look after, aged three, five and eight.
When my employment by the family began they said they would give me extra pay for
doing jobs that were not included in the contract. I agreed because I thougth I would still
have enough time to join a language course and because I knew I would need the money for
my travels around England. Now, not only have I not received any of that money but I have
not had amoment of free time since I started work a month aga.
I would be grateful if you could manage to place me with another family, preferably in the
same area where I am at the moment. I would appreciate if I could work with not more than
two children, both under the age offive. I will be free to move at the end of the month.

Dear Mr Evans,
Thank you for considering my name as a character reference when applying for a job in a
Hungarian secondary school.
I would certainly like to help you but there is a difficulty which I think you would
understand. A reference of the kind you would be looking for should come from someone
who knows you far more closely than I do, and anything I could honestly say would not
therefore be very helpful.
Nevertheless, I suppose that I could still offer you assistance in obtaining a job in Hungary.
I will find out about the schools in the region which are to employ native speaker teachers
and I will send a list of these places to your address as soon as possible.
I do hope that you will find the right job for yourself after aU and that you will spend some
memorable years in Hungary.
Once you are here I shaU be more than happy to give you help.
I believe that you will be able to find someone else who will be of far more use as a
reference to you than I can be.
With the best of wishes,

Dear Sir,
Two weeks ago I purchased a pair of black corduroy trousers from your department store,
the one in Princess Street.
I had wom the trousers only three times when I was surprised to discover that they had
burst at the seams. What is more, the trousers were not cheap at alI.
I took them back to the saleswoman from whom I had bought them. She refused to
exchange them and said that the trousers must be smaller than my size and that I ought to
have looked more thoroughly. When I informed her that my size was exactly what the
product featured she referred me to you.
Now I am writing to you in the hope of some kind of compensation. I never buy cheap
products because I believe in paying for quality. I do take care of my clothes and I have not
had any problems similar to this before. Believe me I only know far too well what my size
IS.
I enclose the trousers and the receipt, which shows the date of purchase.

Dear Mr McIntosh,
I am writing to inform you that I have for some time been anxious to move to acompany

As things stand at present it is unlike1y that the expansion which is taking place at this firm
at the moment is in this direction. I, therefore, have secured a post as transport manager of

While I wish to join that company as soon as possible I am most anxious to cause my

little inconvenience as possible.
Our contract stipulates a month's notice on either side, but I would be willing to stay on
until I have performed aU the tasks undertaken by me during this present rush, if this is of
any help to you. This would mean six more weeks of employment at your firm.
If you could let me know about your decision within the near future I would be most

them.

It is my most unpleasant duty to inform you that we are no longer able to employ you and
must ask you to accept formaI notice from today's date.
We are most reluctant to take this step, which has been forced on us by the contraction of
business. This contraction accounts for the fact that we are unable to retain a post of an
interpreter in future. We also believe that those members of staff who need English in their
everyday work have now reached astage where they can communicate in the language and
cope with their tasks successfully on their own.
Nevertheless, we are appreciative of what you have done for us and I hope that we will be
able to show this when it comes to your severance pay.
I will also be glad to supply references and to help you in any other way to secure another
post.

I have recently heard that you are involved in a research study about the differences
between the system of education in Britain and that of Hungary. To our knowledge nobody
has ever attempted to deal with this issue on an academic basis and we are extremely
interested in the tindings you have so far discovered.
The current activity scope of our society covers a relatively wide area. We regularly offer
lectures in virtuaHy aH disciplines as weH as running arts clubs for those who are
interested. We are also concemed about organising sensible pastime activities such as
sewing circles, photo societies and some more prograrnmes of this kind.
We have a teachers' club, the members of which would highly appreciate a series of
lectures on the topic of your tieid of interest. IdeaHy, they should be held at regular
intervals between now and the end of July as we are planning to take a holiday in August.
Since there are a few questions in connection with the lectures which require further

Dear Sir,
I am writing to you to enquire about some pieces of clothing which were lost in your hotel
laundry service.
I was staying at the Open Arms Hotel from 15th July to 29th July. Three days before my
leave I gave my laundry to the valet. When it was retumed two days later I discovered that
aH my underpants were missing. There were five of them, two striped and three plain.
Apart from the fact that I had to go and purchase some new ones, which I had not counted
on financiaHy, I discovered something else to worry about. A shirt which had also been
laundered had lost its bright purple colour and had become virtuaHy unwearable.
The valet, to whom I complained, said that the underpants and a new shirt would be
forwarded to my home address. It aH happened more than two weeks age and I have not
received anything yet. I am shocked that a three-star hotel should handie this case in such
an unhelpful manner.
I would also like to mention the question of compensation for the items which were either
lost or ruined. They were aH brand-new pieces and cost me about 50 pounds. I hope you
will understand my claim and act accordingly.

I happened to see your splendid performance of 'The Tube' in the local community centre
on Monday and I must tell you that I was very much impressed by it.
I am also a teacher trainer myself and work in the Teacher Training Department of the
University of Veszprm. I am writing to you to invite your theatrical group to give an extra
performance to the students at our institution.
As I said I was totally impressed both by the play itself and the way your students
performed it. Congratulations! I especially liked the fellow who played the part of the Irish
nationalist. But, in fact, all the others acted excellently and they all deserve praise. It was
interesting to realise how diverse British society is.
We have seminars in British Culture and Civilization and this performance would
contribute a great deal to our students' picture oftoday's Britain. We are also in the process
of introducing drama classes into our training programme so I think your experience would
be of great help for us.
With regards to the place of the performance I must assure you that we have a big stage
with all the necessary equipment you would need. But should you have any special
requirements we would be happy to meet them.
I would be really grateful if you could contact me at the above phone number so that we

Dear Mr Craig,
The purpose of this letter is to invite you to undertake the required revision of an old 300-
page long English coursebook written by two Hungarian authors, Gyenes and Balassi.
You will see from the content and organization of the book that it was written in
accordance with the teaching principles of the traditional Grarnmar Translation Method,
therefore each unit would need extensions which would contain authentic and challenging
exercises for the learners.
The other task to be performed is connected with vocabulary use. In recent years many new
words have found their way into the accepted vocabulary, whereas others have simply gone
out of fashion. We would like you to replace the words which have fallen into disuse with
those that are more up-to-date.
Until a start has been made on the work, it is difficult to estimate the length of time it is
likely to take, however, I would fee! it should not last longer than 100 hours altogether. The
most convenient arrangement for your fee would be to base payment on the time factor.
This, along with other details of work, could be agreed on at a meeting between us.
May I suggest that you join me at lunch one day next week, when you could perhaps give
me your decision.
I look forward to hearing from you.

Dear Mr Whitehouse,
I am turning to you to ask you for some advice about language learning.
I have been studying English for five years now, but my level of knowledge is much lower
than it should be after such a long time. I began my English studies in secondary school,
where I had three classes a week. Then I joined a crash course lasting for three months,
which meant a complete change both in terms of intensity of learning and style of teaching.
While in the school we were mainly involved in reading texts, translating them and doing
boring grarnmar exercises; the classes on the course were much more enjoyable. We often
played language games and did a lot of role-playing. We were also asked to do some
written projects, but we were never made to do any tests. Consequently, I did not learn
much.
I have been taught by several teachers believing in different approaches and, still, I cannot
say I have a good command of the language. To be quite frank, half a year ago I decided to
learn on my own, but that, also, was in vain. However, I would badly need English for my
future career; I would like to become a marketing manager and my goal is to work in the
field of foreign trade.
It is not long ago that you came to our town and you have already made a name for yourself
as a very good and competent teacher of the language. May I be so bold as to ask you if you
would have some time to spare for me? I would be really grateful if you could suggest a
suitable time that we could meet.
Thank you in advance.

I shall be very much obliged if you will let me know whether you have accomodation for

my fourteen-year old daughter and myself. We would require one double room, if possible
with private bathroom, and one adjoining single room for my daughter. Preferably, the
rooms should face the sea.
We would require an evening meal as weIl as breakfast. Could you tell us if there are any
possibilities to have a mid-day meal either in the hotel or in the nearby area? AIso, please
let us know whether the accomodation provided includes any special services such as the
use of a swimming pool or any other sports facilities.
We would be grateful to hear some more details about the location of the actual building.
Could you please inform us about how close it is to the sea and whether it is handy for
shopping or if there are any points of interest within reasonable distance.
If you are able to accomodate us at the time indicated please let me know at your earliest
convenience and send details ofyour charges. I thank you in advance for your reply.

In January I rented a cottage for one week in 'The Yews' near Lake Windermere through
your company for May 14-21. I paid 150 pounds for the holiday, which included breakfast
and dinner. I am writing to express my strong dissatisfaction at the accomodation we were
given.
We had expected to be put up in a nice and cosy cottage since in your brochure you
advertised a charming little house which was newly furnished and carpeted throughout. So,
we reaUy were looking forward to apleasant holiday in the beautifui Lake District.
On our arrival, however, we found that the cottage was not at aU as we had been led to

and we decided to clear it up only to realise that the vacuum cleaner was out of order. As
there was no other accomodation available, we were forced under protest to accept these
terrible conditions.
I trust you will agree that we deserve a letter of explanation from you and that it is only fair
that we be offered compensation for our inconvenience. We would appreciate if you could
let us know what steps are going to be taken to rectify the problem.

Dear Ms Hove,
I was interested to read about your plan to launch a series of articles from readers' letters in
your column. I consider this an excellent idea and I am convinced that you will get many
strange stories from different parts ofyour country.
I, myself, am writing to you from Hungary, a small country in Central Europe, but my story
does have some connection with Britain. I decided to tell this story because I am still
unable to provide any explanation for it although it alI happened more than six years ago.
I had been staying in Scotland for two months when I had a strange dream. I was at a party
and I was dancing with my brother-in-Iaw when suddenly the music stopped. The picture
got frozen for a while and there followed an uncanny silence. Then I heard somebody
asking in a sinister voice while showing a bleeding tooth to the company: 'Who does it
belong to?' I began to fee! my gum and to my greatest horror I realised that it was mine.
In the moming I remembered my dream very vividly, and when I recalled some vague
memories about bloody teeth meaning the death of a close relative, I began to fee! uneasy. I
tried to brush away the thought and remind myself of the fact that I had never believed in
anything that is so impalpable.
However, when I arrived home two days later I learned that my brother-in-Iaw had died in a
car crash. Apart from developing a sharp pang of pain in my heart at the news I felt
something inexplicable. I wanted to say I knew it, but nobody would have believed me.
Even now, when I think of it, I get a cold chill down my spine.
This is the story, which I certainly hope you can use in your new column. If you want to
change anything in it that is incorrectly worded or grammatically wrong do not hesitate to
do so.

I have been informed by your good friend Mr Alfred Evans that you might be interested in
arranging an exchange visit with a school in Hungary.
Our school is an English medium school, where the main subjects are taught in English.
There are 76 students in each year. They are really talented as they were selected from
among one thousand applicants on the basis of their abilities and language learning
aptitude. Our objective it to have students who are totally bilingual.
The language department of this school has arranged many visits abroad in previous years,
for example, Romania, Slovakia, Austria and Germany. I would therefore be very
interested to hear your views about the possibility of working together in arranging an
exchange visit of some kind next year.
We have two months' summer holidays beginning tomorrow and you can contact me at my
home address (see above) if you prefer.
y ours sincerely,
Marcella Fejes

Dear Sirs,
We were impressed by the wide assortment of jeans you displayed on your stand at the
recent International Fair in Budapest.
We are a large chain of department stores and we are looking for manufacturers who would
be able to supply us without delay with a wide range of jeans and denim clothes in various
colours.
There is a steady demand here for high-quality goods of this type and a good price can be
obtained for fashionable designs. As we usually place large orders we expect a lower
quotation than indicated in the price list. Could you let us know what discounts you offer
for large orders?
We would be grateful if you could forward any further information you may have about the
products and terms of payment.

Dear Mr Roddler,
I wish to apply for the post of Hotel Manager in your hotel in Sifok, which you advertised
in today's Balaton News. I think I am competent enough to meet the requirements you have
specified.
I was bom in 1955 and I went to primary school in Budapest from 1961 to 1969. Later I
was educated in szak-Pesti Gimnzium, a renowned academic grammar school and left
with very good grades in Maths, English and History.
After leaving the secondary school I took a three years' course at the Budapest College of
Trade and Catering. In the meantime I obtained a certificate of advanced level English and
I can write and speak the language fluently. From 1977 to 1979 I attended a business
course at the Budapest University of Economics, studying business and home affairs.
For the last fifteen years I have worked as sales manager, tourist guide, restaurant manager
and now I am employed as Assistant Manager at the Prmium Hotel, Budapest.
I am fairly ambitious and energetic and I wish to take up a job which requires greater
individual responsibility and judgement. I feel that both my qualifications and my business
experience have been sufficiently broad for me to suit the position you advertised.
Enclosed you will find references from two of my previous employers. I shall be glad to
give you more complete information about myself during a personal interview. I may be
reached at the above address or by telephone at 88 355 489.

Dear Ms WattIey,
I would like to apply for the position of au pair with an English family for one year,
preferably from Oct. 1994 until Aug. 1995.
I am a Hungarian girl and I am 19 years of age. I left secondary school last year and I took
an entrance exam in English to get admission to the English Faculty of the University of
Veszprm. Regretfully though, I was not accepted.
For one year I worked as a nurse in a nearby nursery school. I enjoyed my job very much
but my final goal is to teach English in a secondary school. Therefore I tried the university
144 EGYB HIVATALOS LEVELEK
once again this year and I obtained a much better result. But this still was not enough for
admission. I think I know the language very we11 but I am not confident enough to use it. I
also studied German at school and I am functiona11y literate in it.
I am a fairly reticent person, I do not open up easily. But once I have grown to like
somebody I tend to be faithfui and affectionate to them. I love children and I believe I have
enough patience in dealing with them. I am particularly attracted to those between two and
six but I am sure I will get on we11 with any age group of children.
I live with my parents and since I left school I have been doing most of the housework at
home. What I really like is cooking and I am especia11y good at making salads from alI
kinds of vegetables and fruit.
In my free time I try to keep fit and read as widely as possible. I go to the swimming pool
three times a week and I always take exercise in the momings. Ilike getting up early and
going to bed early. Preferably, I would like a family which has the same routine but, in fact,
I can quite easily accomodate myself to any circumstances.
I would also be grateful if you could register my name in the local language school for
English c1asses. I have read in your advertisement that most families are ready to pay the
tuition fee. I, too, would appreciate that very much.
Enc10sed is my official application form and references from a previous teacher of mine
and the senior teacher in the nursery school. I hope to hear from you soon.
Yours sincerely,
Eleonra Horvth

Ms Viola Horvth has worked with us for eight years and I am sorry to see her go. I have
been continually impressed by her thoroughly professional attitude. She has a tremendous

She is always thoroughly prepared for her lessons and her teaching is exciting and

She can communicate very well with a broad range of students and finds much enjoyment
in her work.
She is well up-to-date with current trends in literature, linguistics as well as in English
Teaching Methodology. She has played the leading role in establishing a new system of
recording and reporting of achievement within the department. Other work Ms Horvth has
undertaken is the introduction and development of a new tutorial programme which
involves students of alI ages in extra-curricuiar work. This further emphasises the
innovative and creative role she has taken in the department.
She is a fiexible and hard-working teacher. She has a very approachable and open style
