QUESTION 1: IN WHAT WAY DOES YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT USE, DEVELOP

OR CHALLENGE FORMS AND CONVENTIONS OF REAL MEDIA PRODUCTS?

Script:

For the media product that we have created this has developed and challenged forms
and conventions of real media products. This is illustrated throughout our trailer
and can be broken down into several parts.

Conventions met

In the beginning of our teaser trailer we decided to introduce the narrative

similarly to the trailer of the post-apocalyptic film: The Road.

Film Reference: The Road (Catastrophe)

Throughout the introduction of 'The Road' we are introduced to the narrative of the
film by seeing footage of a catastrophic event breaking lose throughout the world -
this sequence of shots clearly notifies the audience the narrative and background
of the film being a post-apocalyptic film due to the extreme conditions of the 'new
world' after the catastrophe.

Followed by this sequence of catastrophic events we used a conventional way of

revealing how the protagonist discovers that he is caught between the uncertainties
of the world, as they now know it.

Film Reference: The Walking Dead Season 1 (Discovery)

This convention was drawn inspiration from The Walking Dead: Season 1 when Rick
wakes up from a coma and is in the middle of unravelling what happened to the world
in which case would be a zombie apocalypse virus outbreak. The specific shot that
I drew influence from the first episode of The Walking Dead where Rick walks
throughout the aftermath of the disordered hospital and open the door where he is
blinded by the sight of the outside.

Furthermore, we also decided to use a radio prop similarly to when Rick and Morgan
use it to contact other survivors. Throughout the brief second we see the radio to
indicate that there is hope of other survivors.

Film Reference: The Survivalist (Running)

The Survivalist mainly contributed to the idea of our film. We specifically liked
the ideology of rooting back to primitive ways of survival after the downfall of
the system and creating a barbaric environment of every man for himself,
survival of the fittest. This was demonstrated throughout our trailer where we
decided to include consecutive shots of him igniting a campfire, dipping a can into
polluted river, opening a can with a knife.

The ending of our trailer was inspired from The Survivalist where we see the main
protagonist running through the forest accompanied by a whip pan to indicate the
fast pace of the protagonist running. Throughout implementing this shot within our
teaser trailer this builds tension amongst the audience, as they would be asking
questions such as Who or what is he running from? and Will he escape? thus
leaving the trailer to end with a cliff-hanger that would draw in the audience to
watch the final film.

Film Reference: The Book of Eli (Props and costume)

For the selection of our props and costume we have decided to draw inspiration from
The Book of Eli where the props and costume of the characters featured ragged and
tattered clothing due to the extreme climate of the barren dessert. As a result
weve also decided to replicate these by using the schools DT department to create
a similar effect.

Conventions challenged

Not only did we reinforce the conventions of a post-apocalyptic film we also

decided to challenge certain conventions. These include:

Soundtrack

The soundtrack that weve used throughout the entirety of the film trailer features
an old soundtrack from the 1960s Dion The Wanderer. This challenged the
conventional soundtrack that we would expect from a post-apocalyptic film as this
soundtrack features an upbeat cheerful melody that breaks the conventional
thrilling soundtracks that would reinforce what we would normally see on screen for
a post-apocalypse film.

By juxtaposing the soundtrack to what we see on screen this would lure the audience
to a false sense of security that is then shifted when the booby trap is set off
the soundtrack is then altered to a distorted soundtrack that gives off the
impression that something bad may potentially happen.

Furthermore, despite the soundtrack challenging convention it was suitable due to

its relevant lyrics. Alongside this also comes with contrasting feelings to the
mood of the trailer.

Comments are the questions?

In order to ensure that our media products have a combination with ancillary texts
we made sure to research into our chosen genre to meet the codes and conventions of
a post-apocalyptic film. This would make sure that we would target and attract the
specific target audience of our post-apocalyptic genre. As a result this makes them
work conjointly in order to create an effective media product.
