NAME ____________________________
In this lab experiment you will be studying a scotch yoke mechanism that converts circular
motion into linear motion. One way of measuring velocity is by the use of a velocity transducer.
This laboratory apparatus consist of velocity transducer mounted to measure the linear velocity
of the scotch yoke mechanism. The goal is to calibrate the velocity transducer to measure
velocity.
1. The displacement motion of the scotch yoke mechanism (Figure 1) produces a simple
harmonic motion which is defined as:
s(t) = so sin t
Measure the total travel for the scotch yoke mechanism. From the travel measurement,
calculate the maximum displacement value, so. Note: so can be and must be measured as
of the linear system travel.

1. We have two ways of indirectly measuring the circular frequency; by measuring the period of
the waveform on the oscilloscope and by measuring the RPM with a tachometer. Knowing
what is and the maximum displacement on the scotch yoke mechanism, one can
determine the maximum linear velocity (in/sec). Calculate the maximum linear velocity if the
scotch yoke mechanism were set to: a) RPM = 250 and b) RPM = 400
V = - n d/dt
The faster the lines of flux are cut, the higher the induced voltage or the peak-peak output
voltage is proportional to linear velocity. Observe the output waveform as the speed of the
motor is varied. Note the effects of the output waveform.
3. Adjust the motor speed to 250 RPM. Measure the voltage for displacement and velocity
every 10 ms. Convert the voltage readings to units of displacement and velocity.
4. Use Excel to plot a graph for displacement and velocity vs. time. Each plot should have a
theoretical and measured series associated with it.
