The One and Only Ivan By Katherine Applegate Week 5

These are the questions and activities that we will be working through as we read the book. Each
week you will be given new ones, you are responsible for completing the reading and assigned
work. ALWAYS do the reading the first, and then answer the questions. DO NOT read for the
answers, you will miss a lot of enjoyment and meaning if that is what you do.

Read Pages 121 -128

1) Ivan has started his story PT 1: Before the Humans. In the space below please re-tell
this portion of Ivans story. You can do a comic, or, re-write it in your own words. Please
include all the important characters in Ivans life story before the humans, and the
events that he describes. While some of these events may not seem important (playing
tag) they were important enough to Ivan that he chose to share them with Ruby. They
are the things he remembers from his life with his family in the wild.

2) This is a three-part question: Ivan talks about his life with Mack and his wife, Helen. It
seemed to be a good life, a happy life. Mack and Helen treated Ivan like a baby: did they
treat him like a human baby or a baby gorilla? Do you think this is right? If you think it is
wrong, why do think it was wrong (hint: what happens to animals when we try and act in
 ways that are not their natural instinct)?

3) Ivans life with the humans changes, and how they treated him changed. There are several
key events. Please write down at least 2 things that happened in this section that you just
read, that you think are part of the reason the humans in Ivans life started to treat him
differently.
