So you want to become a citizen?

1) Explain what naturalization means.


Naturalization is the process of becoming a citizen.
2) What is the difference between a naturalized and natural born citizen?
A naturalized citizen is accepted as a citizen after their birth, while a natural born citizen is born
in the United States. To become the President, you must be a natural born citizen.
3) Examine the naturalization requirements section and answer the following questions.

What is the name of the form required to apply for naturalization?


The form is called Form N-400.

How old do you have to be in order to file an application for citizenship?


You must be 18 years old to apply.

What language do you have to have basic reading, writing, and speaking skills in?
You must have basic English skills.

What subject besides English do you have to have an understanding of?


You must have an understanding of Civics along with English.

How long does someone have to live in the United State before applying for
naturalization?
You must live in the United States for 5 years before applying for citizenship. If you are married
to a U.S. citizen, you may apply after living in the United States for 3 years.

1. List the kinds of things that a USCIS officer is looking for during the
naturalization interview
A USCIS Officer will ask questions about an applicant's Form N-400, Application for
Naturalization, and background.

2. What can happen if you lie during your interview?


If you lie, misrepresent facts or conceal information on your citizenship application, you could
face serious penalties, including criminal charges, loss of citizenship (called denaturalization)
and deportation.

3. What three tests will be given during the naturalization interview?


The English test has three components, reading, writing and speaking, and you also must take
the civics test.

4. What kind of questions are asked during the Civics test?


A USCIS officer will ask you up to 10 questions from the list of 100 questions in English. You
must answer correctly 6 of the 10 questions to pass the civics test. It asks questions about how
our government works.

5. If your application is approved what is the last step before becoming a citizen?
If your application is approved, the last step is to take the oath of allegiance to the United
States.
