Big or Essential Question: How does the voting process work?

Curriculum Standards: 5.3.4.E: Explain the voting process.

Lesson Objectives:
Students will be able to:
1. demonstrate the voting process.

Assessment: The students will act out the voting process by registering to vote,
reading information on candidates, and filling out a ballot to vote.

Resources and Materials:


Voter registration cards (1 per student)
http://www.ontheissues.org/2016/Hillary_Clinton_Education.htm (used for
all main campaigners)
Sheet with different candidates views on education (one for each student)
Trifolds as voting booths (2)
Ballots with party option and nominees (one for each student)
Dry erase boards, markers, erasers (one for each student)

Vocabulary: No new vocabulary

Anticipatory Set: Teacher will have the students register to vote.

Procedures:
1. Teacher will have students make campaign posters for their candidate.
2. Teacher will have students vote on which candidate they want to be president.
3. When students are done voting, they will give their ballot to the teacher to tally.
4. Teacher will announce the president based on class votes.

Adaptations:
Teacher will read ballots for AE.

Closure:
Teacher will ask the class the following questions and each student will write
their answers on a dry erase board.
What kind of election did we hold? General or Primary?
What did you use to cast your votes?
What is the term for the people that are running for president?
What two main political parties do we have in the United States?
Why did you vote for the candidate that you voted for?
