article and book read aloud and answering comprehension questions

Subject Matter/Content:
Prerequisites:
Students must have a basic idea that we vote for the president of the US
Key Vocabulary:
Elect- to choose by voting
President- the leader of our country
Vote- to make a choice in an election
Candidates- people who want to be picked to be president
Content/Facts:
First you learn about each candidate before you vote
You can read about each candidate and learn about how they want to help the country
On election day, you go to a school or another place where you can vote
Then you go in a voting booth where no one can see who you vote for
People vote all day then at the end of the day all the votes are counted
You can watch TV to see who won the election to be president
Introduction/Activating/Launch Strategies:
1. Tell the students that this week we are learning about Presidents Day and yesterday we learned
about what a president’s role is
2. Tell them today we are going to learn about the voting process and the steps to vote for the
president of the US
3. Ask the students to come to the rug
4. Read the book: Duck For President aloud
5. Ask the students what the duck did to get votes and ask why they think people voted for him
6. Give time for questions after talking about the book
Development/Teaching Approaches
1. Pass out the student version of the Scholastic News Articles A Duck Can’t Be President
2. Have the online version on the Smart Board
3. Go over the vocabulary words on the Smart Board
4. Read the article aloud to the class and stop after each box and ask the class who can raise their
hand and tell you what they learned about that step of the voting process
5. Give time for questions after you read the article
6. Have the students go back to their seats
7. Pass out voting registration cards
8. Tell the students we need to fill these out if we want to vote
9. Walk around and assist as needed
10. Collect the voting cards when finished
Closure/Summarizing Strategies:
1. Go over the steps of the voting process
2. Tell the students that tomorrow we are going to have our own classroom election where they
can vote for a class president for the day
Accommodations/Differentiation:
For students who are advanced have them complete the quiz on the back of the article while the
other students are working on their craft
For students who are struggling
