Steering wheel/vehicle pull

Customer complaint: - The vehicle does not hold course; constant countersteering required
- The vehicle moves right/left when the steering wheel is being held
steady

Carry out test drive with customer!

Workshop findings: - Steering wheel is offset "12 teeth" to the right/left

- If you release the steering wheel, the vehicle moves right/left
- The vehicle has begun pulling to the right/left since a tire change
- If the steering wheel is completely extended/retracted and in the
uppermost/bottommost position, it is not straight
- Toe values at the rear axle are outside the tolerances

Note: Seating means no vehicle evaluation at fewer than 200 km

Steering wheel/vehicle pull

Possible causes
External influence vehicle rammed/damaged
Check repair history
Check wheels and tyres for damage
Verify DOT number
Check toe and camber values at front axle

Cockpit design
Driver-friendly, domed cockpit suggested Steering
wheel not straight Nature of the technology

Steering wheel within permissible ex-works tolerances

Required production tolerance of 2
Carry out wheel alignment in the steering
wheel/column position required by the customer

Steering wheel/vehicle pull

Possible causes
Steering column position
The gimbals mounting of the steering column (universal joints)
means that the steering wheel is not straight in all
steering column positions
Carry out wheel alignment in the steering wheel/column
position required by the customer
Tire taper
A production-induced deviation in tire construction may result
in differing rolling circumferences at different points in the tire
tread during operation (taper effect)
Switch over the tires at the front axle
- The vehicle will stay straight No further repairs are required
- If the vehicle pulls in the opposite direction
Optimize the wheels using VAS6230

Steering wheel/vehicle pull

Possible causes
Vehicle following tilt of the road
Check the vehicle on a road camber
that is the exact opposite
If the vehicle follows that road camber, the vehicle is
performing in line with the nature of the technology

Axle alignment incorrect

Carry out wheel alignment and observe any duty of notification
Check the toe values at the front axle and adjust as necessary
Check and adjust the trail at the front axle (Q7 only)
Check, adjust and/or determine the camber at the front axle
Toe values at the rear axle have no impact on steering wheel pull or
unevenness (dog trot)
