which includes the Detroit metropolitan area. In 2014, Congressman Conyers was elected to his
26th following term, making him the first African-American to hold the difference as Dean of
Congress. Congressman Conyers, born in Detroit, MI, attended Northwestern High School. Upon
graduation, he enrolled to Wayne State University for his undergraduate and legal studies.
Congressman Conyers served in the National Guard and the United States Army Corps of
Engineers during the Korean War. Congressman Conyers is married to Monica, and they have
two sons John III and Carl Edward .Conyers boundaries included the east side of Detroit,
servings of the city's near west side, the inner suburbs of River Rouge, Harper Woods, Ecorse,
the downriver communities of Lincoln Park, and Wyandotte, as well as the upscale Grosse Pointe
suburbs. Conyers passion is, to have integrity and commitment to the community and
distinguished him as one of Detroits finest.

Congressman Conyers and his staff pride themselves on helping the people of Michigan's
13th Congressional District. In 2007, Congressman Conyers became the first African-American
to serve as Chair of the House Committee on the Judiciary. The committee serves an important
role as it has jurisdiction over any legislation that carries a responsibility for criminal or civil
penalties. Congressman Conyers served as Chairman from 2007-2011, and is currently the
Ranking Member. A few of the bills Conyers have that are in progress are

A.07/09/2015 Referred to the Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism, Homeland Security, and

Investigations.

B.06/11/15 At the end of the bill (before the short title), add the following: SEC. __. None of the
funds made available by this Act may be used to provide arms, training, or other assistance to the
Azov Battalion.

Data that I discovered was,

Scott, Conyers Statement on New Civil Rights Data from Department of Education Rep. John
Conyers, Jr. (MI-13) released the following statement on the release of the new data by OCR:

The report released today from the Department of Education is a disturbing reminder of what
too many families already know, and what was confirmed in the report from the General
Accountability Office (GAO) we unveiled last month. Our nations increasingly diverse student
population is too often hyper-segregated in K-12 public schools and, sadly, educational
opportunity is not available to all students of color on equal terms. This new data, and GAOs
study, are a call to action.
That is why we introduced H.R.5260, the Equity and Inclusion Enforcement Act. The bill would
amend Title VI of the Civil Rights Act to allow individuals to bring suits against school districts
that implement practices and policies that have disparate impact based on race, color or
nationality. We must honor our obligation to fulfil the promise of Brown v. Board of Education
and seize the opportunity presented by the Every Student Succeeds Act to take meaningful and
deliberate action supported by the Federal government to level the playing field in public K-
12 schools.
To summarize this assignment I found it very interesting that on April 8, 1968, four days
after Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. passed away, Congressman Conyers introduced the original
Martin Luther King Holiday Act of 1983. John Conyers was the first African-American to hold
the difference as Dean of Congress. He represents Michigans 13th Congressional District after
15 years; the bill would eventually pass into law, making the third Monday of January as an
official Federal holiday. Conyers has been a major advocate of more than 100 pieces of critical
legislation including the original Voting Rights Act of 1965, the Violence against Women Act of
1994, the Motor Voter Bill of 1993, the Alcohol Warning Label Act of 1988, and the Jazz
Preservation Act of 1987. Congressman Conyers was also the driving force behind the Help
America Vote Act of 2002.
