How to make successful small talk on the phone

When we hear the expression small talk, perhaps it makes us think of some kind of trivial
conversation. But the opposite is true, says psychologist Bernardo J. Carducci, head of Indiana
Universitys Shyness Research Institute. Small talk not only builds relationships, he says, it also
helps to boost confidence. Many people think small talk is an innate talent. In fact, it is an
acquired skill. There is structure, and there are rules of engagement, he explains. If we know the
basic structure, we find it less intimidating to connect with others.

The challenge on the phone is that you cant see the other person. But the good thing is that you
dont have to spend too long with them. So you dont need to say much.
