Road Design and Traffic Management

Introduction
Welcome
Welcome to Road Design and Traffic Management. This course is designed to teach you some of the
fundamental knowledge and skills that you will need in your career as a Civil Engineer. The main focus of the
course is on road design and traffic management and you will learn how to design typical rural roads and urban
road networks. The course is very "hands on" and you will learn many useful, interesting and practical skills.

This course focuses on skills such as how to interpret and use survey data, how to design roads and draft road
plans, how to plan and calculate bulk earthworks and how to design pavements and road drainage systems. It
also explores fundamentals associated with managing the transport demands of the road users by developing
knowledge on conducting site observations, identifying road hierarchies and roadway elements, the Traffic
Impact Analysis (TIA), how to propose the use of traffic control devices and Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS).

Many of the skills you will learn in this course are considered by industry to be crucial for new civil graduates to
possess. Employers want new graduates to be able to "hit the ground running" and do not want to have to
invest large amounts of resources to "get you up to speed". They want you to be able to start work on Day 1.
The skills you will learn in this course relate to infrastructure design and how to use Microstation, 12d Model
and how to apply traffic management principles.

Course Objectives
On completion of this course, students should be able to:

CO1. understand the functions of road hierarchy

CO3. understand the functions of traffic control devices, and the applications of ITS

CO4. develop simple local area traffic management schemes

CO5. Design simple rural roads including centre line alignment, grading, horizontal and verticle curves, sight
distances, drainage etc.

Course Content
Geometric road design including haulage diagrams. Introduction to 2D CAD. Introduction to automated
computer applications for road design. Hierarchy of roads. Roadway elements. Traffic control devices.
Intelligent transport systems (ITS). The principles of local area traffic management including parking
management.

Assessments
Assessment #1 - Test (Graded)
The in-class test will occur during week 9 lecture time and you will be given the full 2 hours duration to
complete. The test will be based on the content of lectures from weeks 5 to 8 inclusive.

Assessment #2 - Tutorial work (Graded)


The tutorial assessment consists of 3 tutorial tasks:
1. MicroStation tutorial (conducted in pairs),
2. Horizontal Alignment tutorial,
3. Earthworks tutorial.

Assessment #3 - Group project (Graded)


The group assignment will be an application of road design theory that you learn in lectures and use of the 12d
Model software package. This assignment will be conducted in pairs.

Assessment #4 - Group assignment (Graded)


The group assignment will be an application of traffic management principles. This assignment will be
conducted in pairs.

Supplementary Assessment
Supplementary assessment will be granted to students under any of the following conditions, only if, in the
opinion of the course coordinator, there is a reasonable expectation that the student could achieve a
supplementary pass in the course:

1. To be considered for supplementary assessment, students undertaking a full-time load of 13.5


units or more per study period will require a Grade Point Average (GPA) of 2.80 or greater for
studies undertaken in the six months immediately preceding and relevant to the academic review
period.
2. UniSA may use discretion in applying the GPA requirement to students who have undertaken less
than 13.5 units per study period in the six months immediately preceding and relevant to the
academic review period. Supplementary assessment will not be awarded to a student who has
failed greater than 50% of the course load attempted in the six months immediately preceding and
relevant to the academic review period.
3. For the purposes of 1 and 2 above, the six months immediately preceding and relevant to the
academic review period include study periods 6 and 7 from the previous academic year and study
periods 1 and 2 from the current academic year when the academic review is undertaken mid-
year. Study periods 3, 4 and 5 of the current academic year are included when the academic
review is undertaken at the end-of-year.
4. The student must have received a final grade of F1 (Fail Level 1) in the course.
5. The student may be awarded supplementary assessment in a maximum of two courses in a given
study period where a final grade of F1 is obtained, provided the student has passed at least one
course in the six months immediately preceding and relevant to the academic review period.
6. Supplementary assessment will not be awarded for a final grade of Fail Level 2 (F2), except under
the conditions described in the point below.
7. Special arrangements regarding supplementary assessment (including examination) may be made
for a student who is undertaking the final courses of their program. A student is defined to be
undertaking the final courses of their program if they have nine or less units remaining to complete
their program.

Variation to assessment methods, tasks and timelines can be provided in:

Unexpected or exceptional circumstances, for example bereavement, unexpected illness (details of


unexpected or exceptional circumstances for which variation can be considered are discussed in clauses 7.5 &
7.6 of the Assessment Policy and Procedures Manual). Variation to assessment in unexpected or exceptional
circumstances should be discussed with your course coordinator as soon as possible.
Special circumstances, for example religious observance grounds, or community services (details of special

circumstances for which variation can be considered are discussed in clause 7.8 of the Assessment Policy and
Procedures Manual). Variations to assessment in expected circumstances must be requested within the first
two weeks of the course (or equivalent for accelerated or intensive teaching).

Academic Integrity

Questionnaires will become available towards the end of the study period so that you may provide feedback on
your learning experience in the course. It is anticipated that the questionnaires will be carried out in the tutorials
during Week 11.
