Introduction
Welcome
Welcome to Road Design and Traffic Management. This course is designed to teach you some of the
fundamental knowledge and skills that you will need in your career as a Civil Engineer. The main focus of the
course is on road design and traffic management and you will learn how to design typical rural roads and urban
road networks. The course is very "hands on" and you will learn many useful, interesting and practical skills.
This course focuses on skills such as how to interpret and use survey data, how to design roads and draft road
plans, how to plan and calculate bulk earthworks and how to design pavements and road drainage systems. It
also explores fundamentals associated with managing the transport demands of the road users by developing
knowledge on conducting site observations, identifying road hierarchies and roadway elements, the Traffic
Impact Analysis (TIA), how to propose the use of traffic control devices and Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS).
Many of the skills you will learn in this course are considered by industry to be crucial for new civil graduates to
possess. Employers want new graduates to be able to "hit the ground running" and do not want to have to
invest large amounts of resources to "get you up to speed". They want you to be able to start work on Day 1.
The skills you will learn in this course relate to infrastructure design and how to use Microstation, 12d Model
and how to apply traffic management principles.

Course Objectives
On completion of this course, students should be able to:
CO3. understand the functions of traffic control devices, and the applications of ITS
CO5. Design simple rural roads including centre line alignment, grading, horizontal and verticle curves, sight
distances, drainage etc.

Course Content
Geometric road design including haulage diagrams. Introduction to 2D CAD. Introduction to automated
computer applications for road design. Hierarchy of roads. Roadway elements. Traffic control devices.
Intelligent transport systems (ITS). The principles of local area traffic management including parking
management.

Assessments
Assessment #1 - Test (Graded)
The in-class test will occur during week 9 lecture time and you will be given the full 2 hours duration to
complete. The test will be based on the content of lectures from weeks 5 to 8 inclusive.
