The document discusses probabilistic-based design methods for reinforced concrete structures. Traditional deterministic design methods do not account for uncertainties in resistance and loading parameters and assume structures are fully safe from failure. However, failure is possible due to various uncertainties. Probabilistic design quantifies uncertainties and incorporates them into the design process by defining an acceptable target probability or reliability of failure. This probabilistic approach provides a rational solution for ensuring adequate structural safety.

Probabilistic-Based Design Method: The above two methods are deterministic
based design methods. The traditional deterministic based design methods cannot able to address the uncertainties where are involved in the process. Another thing is that deterministic-based method consider free from failure ( fully safe structure). But really it is not possible. Lot of uncertainties are involved in resistance and load parameters. These uncertainties should be properly quantified and incorporated into the design process. A rational and quantitative solution to the problem of adequate safety can be obtained by quantifying the acceptable risk in terms of target probability of failure or target reliability.
