1. A narrative is a storytelling format. It must have a clear beginning, middle,


and end. Identify these three components in your story:

2. A narrative involves fully formed characters. List and describe each of the
characters in this story. Also, add what you can tell about these characters
that may not be specifically stated on the page.

3. A narrative engages the reader from the beginning. How does the author try
to engage the reader in the introduction? Does it work? Why or why not?

4. What type of order does the author use to tell the story: chronology? Reverse
chronology? In medias res? Is his choice of ordering the events of the story
effective? List one other way he could have ordered it.

5. A narrative makes the reader feel like they are there seeing the incident as it
happens or experiencing it like the character. Which of the senses does this
author use to place you there? Give an example of each one used in the
story.

6. A narrative usually needs dialogue: either between the characters, between


the character and him/herself. What was the best example of dialogue in the
story? How did it add to the story?

7. A narrative needs a reflection that shows the significance of the story, and
hint at why the author chose to expound on this particular story. What point
does the author make with this story?

8. What grammatical mistakes does he make? (if any)

9. Who is his audience for this story? Who would enjoy it?

10.What do you think is his purpose for this story? Does his tone and word
choice (diction) fit this purpose?
