The Golden Cucumber

Once upon a time, near a jungle, lived a farmer couple, a husband and a wife. Every

day they prayed for a child.

One night, while they were praying, a giant passed by their home. The giant heard them

pray and said:

Dont worry. I can help you. But you must give me the child to me on her 17th birthday.

They were so happy and agreed to the condition set by the giant. The giant gave them a

few of cucumber seeds. The farmers took the seeds and planted them.

Soon enough, the cucumber plants grew and a big golden cucumber grew in the plants.

The farmers plucked the ripened cucumber and cut it open. They were astonished to

see a beautiful child inside the cucumber. They named her Timun Mas (Golden

Cucumber). The couple were so happy. They rise Timun Mas into a beautiful girl with

loving care.

Time passed and Timun was almost 17 years old. They knew they had to keep their

promise to the giant but they also did not want to lose their beloved daughter. They

called Timun Mas and said:

My daughter, take this bag. It can save you from the giant, said the father.

What giant? What do you mean, Father? I dont understand, said Timun Mas. The

farmers narrated the story of her birth to Timun Mas.

Right then, the giant entered their house.

Run Timun Mas. Save your life! said the mother.

The giant grew angry when he heard this. Timun Mas had started running. He ran after

her. Timun Mas looked behind and saw that the giant was getting closer and closer.

She opened the bag and threw a handful of salt at him. It became a sea. The giant had

to swim to cross the sea. When she saw that the giant was nearing her again, she

opened the bag and threw some chilies in his path. The chilies grew and formed a

jungle blocking his way. The sharp thorns on the trees hurt the giant.

However he cut away the trees and continued chasing Timun Mas. Timun Mas took her

third magic stuff. It was cucumber seeds. She threw them and they turned into a

cucumber field. The giants legs were tangled in the cucumber creepers and he kept

falling down.

Still the giant managed to escape and continued running after Timun Mas. Timun

searched her bag again. She had one last magic stuff in the bag. It was a terasi ( shrimp

paste ). She threw it at him and the terasi turned into a big swamp.

The giant tried to swim across the swamp. But he was too tired by now and drowned in

the. Seeing that the giant had died, Timun Mas went back home. Timuns parents were

happy to see their daughter return and the family was finally together again.
Text Story Telling (Narrative Text) Pinocchio

Once upon a time, Gepetto, an old woodsman, living in the great Italian pine forest, was
lonely. He always dreamed about having a son.

Each day, he went cutting woods for the towns people, one day, he was making a
puppet from a tree branch. "You shall be my little boy," he said to the puppet, "and I
shall call you 'Pinocchio'." He worked for hours, carefully carving each detail. When he
reached the mouth, the puppet started making faces at Geppetto. "Stop that, you
naughty boy," Geppetto scolded, "Stop that at once !" "I won't stop !" cried
Pinocchio."You can talk !" exclaimed Geppetto.

"Of course I can, silly," said the puppet. "You've given me a mouth to talk with."
Pinocchio rose to his feet and danced on the table top. "Look what I can do !" he
squealed.
"Pinocchio, this is not the time to dance," Geppetto explained. "You must get a good
night's rest. Tomorrow you will start going to school with the real boys. You will learn
many things, including how to behave."

On his way to school the next morning, Pinocchio stopped to see a puppet show. "I can
dance and sing better than those puppets and I don't need strings," boasted Pinocchio.
He climbed onto the stage."Get off my stage," roared the Puppet Master. Then he
noticed how much the crowd liked Pinocchio. He did not say anything and let Pinocchio
stay. "Here, you've earned five copper coins," the Puppet Master told Pinocchio."Take
these coins and go straight home," said the Puppet Master. Pinocchio put the coins into
his sack.

He did not go very far before he met a lame Fox and a blind Cat. Knowing that
Pinocchio had money, they pretended to be his friends. "Come with us. We'll teach you
how to turn those copper pieces into gold," coaxed the sneaky Cat. "We want to help
you get rich. Plant your coins under this magic tree. In a few hours they'll turn to gold,"
said the Fox. "Show me where," said Pinocchio excitedly. The Cat and Fox pointed to a
patch of loose dirt. Pinocchio dug a hole and put the sack in it, marking the spot with a
stone."Splendid !" exclaimed the Cat. "Now let's go to the inn for supper."

After supper, the Fox and Cat, who weren't really lame or blind, quickly snuck away and
disguised themselves as thieves. They hid by the tree waiting for Pinocchio to come
back and dig up the money. After Pinocchio dug up the coins they pounced on him.
"Give us your money !" they ordered. But Pinocchio held the sack between his teeth and
resisted to give the sack to them. Again they demanded, "Give us your money !"

Pinocchio's Guardian Fairy, who was dressed all in blue and had blue hair, sent her dog,
Rufus, to chase the Fox and Cat away. She ordered Rufus to bring Pinocchio back to
her castle. "Please sit down," she told Pinocchio. Rufus kept one eye open to watch
what was going on. "Why didn't you go to school today?" she asked Pinocchio in a
sweet voice. "I did," answered Pinocchio. Just then, his nose shot out like a tree branch.
"What's happening to my nose?" he cried. "Every time you tell a lie, your nose will grow.
When you tell the truth, it will shrink," said the Blue Fairy. "Pinocchio, you can only
become a real boy if you learn how to be brave, honest and generous."
The Blue Fairy told Pinocchio to go home and not to stop for any reason. Pinocchio tried
to remember what the Blue Fairy told him.

On the way to home he met some boys. "Come with us," said the boys. "We know a
wonderful place filled with games, giant cakes, pretty candies, and circuses." The boys
didn't know that if you were bad, you were turned into donkeys and trained for the
circus. It was not very long before the boys began changing into donkeys. "That's what
happens to bad boys," snarled the Circus Master as he made Pinocchio jump through a
hoop.
Pinocchio could only grow a donkey's ears, feet, and tail, because he was made of
wood. The Circus Master couldn't sell him to any circus.
He threw Pinocchio into the sea. The instant Pinocchio hit the water, the donkey tail fell
off and his own ears and feet came back. He swam for a very long time. Just when he
couldn't swim any longer, he was swallowed by a great whale. "It's dark here," scared
Pinocchio said.
Pinocchio kept floating deep into the whale's stomach. "Who's there by the light?" called
Pinocchio, his voice echoing.
"Pinocchio, is that you?" asked a tired voice.
"Father, you're alive !" Pinocchio shouted with joy. He wasn't scared anymore. Pinocchio
helped Geppetto build a big raft that would hold both of them. When the raft was
finished, Pinocchio tickled the whale. "Hold tight, Father. When he sneezes, he'll blow
us out of here !" cried Pinocchio.
Home at last, Geppetto tucked Pinocchio into his bed. "Pinocchio, today you were
brave, honest and generous," Geppetto said. "You are my son and I love you."
Pinocchio remembered what the Blue Fairy told him. "Father, now that I've proven
myself, I'm waiting for something to happen," he whispered as he drifted off to sleep.
The next morning Pinocchio came running down the steps, jumping and waving his
arms. I He ran to Geppetto shouting, "Look Father, I'm a real boy !"

Once upon a time there lived a girl called Cinderella. she was happy live with her father
and mother. until her mother died dead and her father had married a widow with two
daughters. Her stepmother didnt like her one little bit. But, for the poor unhappy girl,
there was nothing at all. Her stepmother has two daughters and they were very
bossy. No rest and no comfort. She had to work hard all day. Only when evening came
was she allowed to sit for a while by the fire, near the cinders. Thats why everybody
called her Cinderella.

Cinderella used to spend long hours all alone talking to the cat. The cat always said,
Miaow, which really meant, Cheer up! You have something neither of your stepsisters
has and that is beauty. It was quite true. Cinderella, even dressed in old rags, was a
lovely girl. While her stepsisters, no matter how splendid and elegant their clothes, were
still clumsy, lumpy and ugly and always would be.

One day, beautiful new dresses arrived at the house. A ball was to be held at the palace
and the stepsisters were getting ready to go. Cinderella didnt even dare ask if she
could go too. She knew very well what the answer would be: You? Youre staying at
home to wash the dishes, scrub the floors and turn down the beds for your stepsisters.
They will come home tired and very sleepy. Cinderella sighed, Oh dear, Im so
unhappy! and the cat murmured Miaow.

Suddenly something amazing happened. As Cinderella was sitting all alone, there was a
burst of light and a fairy appeared. Dont be alarmed, Cinderella, said the fairy. I know
you would love to go to the ball. And so you shall! How can I, dressed in rags?
Cinderella replied.

The fairy smiled. With a flick of her magic wand Cinderella found herself wearing the
most beautiful dress she had ever seen. Now for your coach, said the fairy; A real
lady would never go to a ball on foot! Quick! Get me a pumpkin! Oh of course, said
Cinderella, rushing away. Then the fairy turned to the cat. You, bring me seven mice,
and, remember they must be alive!

Cinderella soon returned with the pumpkin and the cat with seven mice he had caught
in the cellar. With a flick of the magic wand the pumpkin turned into a sparkling coach
and the mice became six white horses, while the seventh mouse turned into a
coachman in a smart uniform and carrying a whip. Cinderella could hardly believe her
eyes.

You shall go to the ball Cinderella. But remember! You must leave at midnight. That is
when my spell ends. Your coach will turn back into a pumpkin and the horses will
become mice again. You will be dressed in rags and wearing clogs instead of these
glass slippers! Do you understand? Cinderella smiled and said, Yes, I understand!

Cinderella had a wonderful time at the ball until she heard the first stroke of midnight!
She remembered what the fairy had said, and without a word of goodbye she slipped
from the Princes arms and ran down the steps. As she ran she lost one of her slippers,
but not for a moment did she dream of stopping to pick it up! If the last stroke of
midnight were to sound oh what a disaster that would be! Out she fled and
vanished into the night.
The Prince, who was now madly in love with her, picked up the slipper and said to his
ministers, Go and search everywhere for the girl whose foot this slipper fits. I will never
be content until I find her! So the ministers tried the slipper on the foot of every girl in
the land until only Cinderella was left.

Suddenly the fairy appeared and waved her magic wand. In a flash, Cinderella
appeared in a splendid dress, shining with youth and beauty. Her stepmother and
stepsisters gaped at her in amazement, and the ministers said, Come with us
Cinderella! The Prince is waiting for you. So Cinderella married the Prince and lived
happily ever.

MALIN KUNuDANG
long time ago, there was a fisherman living at Batang Arau. He
several children but only one son. He gave his son the best
possible education. He wanted him to do well and become
famous. When the boy had finished school, his father found a job
for him on a large ship sailing to foreign countries. He realized
that he would not see him again for many years. But he knew that
his son was clever and hard-working and he hoped that his son
might have the chance to become a ships officer.
The years passed. The fishermans daughters married and left
home. The fisherman became old and died. His widow lived by
herself. One day, the villagers came running to the old woman to
tell her that her son had returned. I dont believe you, she said
Yes, they said, Hes the captain of a ship which has just sailed
into the harbor from Singapore. Come and see for yourself. The
old woman put on her best clothes. She cooked some food to give
her son. She remembered the food he liked best when he was a
small boy.
She hired a rowing boat to take her out to the ship which was
anchored in the harbour. She saw a tall handsome man standing
on the deck of the ship. It was her son! Even after all these years,
there was no doubt about it. Son, she called out, dont you
recognize me? Im you mother, Tears came to her eyes. Who are
you? he replied. I dont know you. Dont let her come aboard,
he instructed his sailors.
Next day, the old woman came again but her son refused to see
her. On the third day, he told his sailors to drive her away. Why
does this old woman come to my ship? he asked. I dont mind
giving her a few cents but I dont like her saying that shes my
mother, Very well, my son, the old woman said. God will
surely punish you for being so wicked. How can you refuse to
recognize your own mother? she gazed at him for a long time but
he said nothing. Suddenly, a huge black cloud covered the sun. it
became as dark as night. The wind roared with a terrible noise.
The sea became very rough and the waves beat against the side
of the ship. The ship rocked to and fro. The mast came tumbling
down with a great Cra-a-a-ash.
The ship was driven like a coconut shell across the harbor. Before
anyone could do anything about it. It turned over and sank. Then
it rained so heavily that it was impossible to see more than a few
yards. When the storm stopped, the old woman looked for the
ship again. But there was nothing except a large rock sticking out
through the water. Her son and his ship were never seen again.
