during three days of training. CAA/Hartman hosted the event at
ALTAIR Training Solutions.
The CAA and Hartman Optics CEO, Lt. Col. (IDF Ret.) Mikey Hartman, served as
chief instructor for the event. Mikey served over 20 years in the IDF, where
he developed/revamped the entire IDF Shooting Doctrine.
For this event, Mikey brought in several highly qualified instructors to assist,
including IDF experts and U.S. Special Forces. It was quickly apparent that
the CAA/Hartman seminar was not your typical marketing meet and greet.
Participants were on the range from 7 a.m. until 9 p.m., going through
multiple IDF-inspired training evolutions/drills, including night fire and runs
through ALTAIRs CQB shoot house.

CONSIDERATIONS
For close-quarter-battle (CQB) use and out
to 50 yards, a red dot sight is normally the
best option because it is quicker on target
than open sights and has a greater field of
view than a traditional riflescope. This is also
true for home defense and certain compe-
tition stages. A red dot optic has a single
aiming point that you can use with both eyes
open and offers a wide field of view. It will
have no magnification. The two types of red
dot optics are reflex and holographic.

01Understand
the Difference
Dont clean your pistol the same way you clean
your rifle. When you clean your rifle, you are
making sure the bore is devoid of all debris that
could affect the projectiles flight. When you clean
your handgun, you are ensuring that you dont let
gunk influence the operations cycle. You are not
looking to hit the wings on a gnat at 100 meters
with your pistol a slight amount of smudge
in the barrel wont make a difference. What you
are concerned about is getting a class-three
malfunction while a threat is bearing down on you.
02 Frequency
Factor
You need to clean your pistol often. How often?
That depends. Because of my job as a firearms
instructor, it is unrealistic for me to do a full
armorers breakdown every time I shoot. However, I
do a quick clean once a week and a full armorers
breakdown once a month, unless the build-up on
my gun necessitates it sooner. My recommendation
is to clean your handgunat the minimumonce a
month. If you havent shot it during the month, clean
it anyway and feel guilty for not practicing.
03 Stay
Standard
Rifle shooters make all sorts of homemade
concoctions to remove brass, lubricate and
generally make their long guns the equivalent to
a modern Excalibur. Pistols dont require that level
of obsessive compulsive disorder. Dedicated gun
cleaners that are sold at the gun or sporting goods
store are more than adequate. And heres a pro tip:
Never use WD-40.
04 Keep Your
Distance
All too often, shooters work in fairly close quarters
in the garage or the basement, but this is
potentially a recipe for disaster. A lot of us also use
snap caps to function test our recently cleaned
pistols. Snap caps and live ammo dont mix. The
