a. According to the article, what are 2 definitions of culture?


-It is an appreciation of good literature, music, art, and food or to a biologist, it is likely to be a
colony of bacteria or other microorganisms growing in a nutrient medium in a laboratory Petri dish.
And for anthropologists and other behavioral scientists, culture is the full range of learned human
behavior patterns.
b. What are the 3 layers of culture?
-The three layers are the body of cultural traditions, subculture, and cultural universals
c. What is a subculture?
- Subculture is when you have many traditions that are share with other cultures.
d. List the cultural universals.
- The Cultural Universals are communication with verbal language, using age and gender to classify
people, classifying people based on marriage, raising children, sexual division, concept of privacy, rules that
regulate sexual behavior, distinguishing good and bad behavior, body ornamentation, making jokes/ playing games,
having art, and some sort of leadership roles.
e. What is the difference between culture and society?
- While cultures are complexes of learned behavior patterns and perceptions, societies are groups of
interacting organisms

- A stereotype is an assumption of an image or idea of a particular type of person or thing.

a. What are some different categories of stereotypes?


- The different categories of stereotypes are Sex, race, age, sexual orientation, religion and physical
ability
b. What is one of the stereotypes youve heard of that is listed in the 1992 gender study?
- I have heard that women arent as powerful as men
c. Why is mass media considered significant to stereotyping?
- It is because second hand information comes from mass media and since a lot of people reply on
that information, it plays a role in determining culture. Stereotyping is a product of culture, therefore, mass
media have a strong influence in supporting and tearing down stereotypical characteristics.
d. Why are stereotypes functional?
- Stereotypes are functional because we get more information then we can handle, so we tend to trade it
in for simplicity, which can lead to inaccuracy.
e. What is the most influential factor in stereotyping? Why?
- Prejudice is the most influential factor because our perceptions are highly subjective, and many people
subscribe to derogatory descriptions of ethnic groups. Unfortunately the selectivity of a person's perception
result in people seeing what they expect to see when they come in contact with members of an ethnic group
they view with prejudice
5. Define family dynamics.
-Family dynamics is the way in which members of a family interact with each other in relation to their
individual goals and preferences.

6. According to this definition, what are your family dynamics?


- My family dynamics are that every single one of my family members are usually busy throughout the
week, so it important we know everyones schedule, we help as much as we can. We all know our
roles.
