THE PELA AND ECCLESIASTICUS

(Summary)

The Slavonic translation of the Pela contains 118 verses of Ecclesiasticus, of

which 61 are paralleled in the Preslav Glagolitic Knjaij Izbornik of ca. 930. Compari-
son of these verses shows that both books used the same translation, both varying the
wording of the original. In frequency and scope the variation is comparable to that at-
tested in a Preslav Glagolitic homiliary for Holy Week, compiled before 899, preserved
in a Suprasliensis version and a Clozianus version (defects in the latter filled by
younger Cyrillic manuscripts, e.g. cod. Moskva RGB F.304 9). A layer of variant
readings in the Pela is identified as hailing from a Glagolitic antigraph; it seems not to
be limited to Ecclesiasticus. Definitive diagnosis, however, must be postponed until all
Biblical gnomes in the Pela are examined to determine whether they, too, have been
collated with a previous translation into Slavonic.
