THE GLAGOLITIC (AZ). ON THE PROTOTYPE OF

CONSTANTINE-CYRILS SACRED LETTERS

Pavel Georgiev
(abstract)

The author offers the staurogram-chrysmon with the Greek letters alpha
and omega hanging under the horizontal arm of the cross which is known since

early Christian times to be accepted as a prototype of the Glagolitic sacred letters.

It is an expression of the formula of divine substance in the Revelation of St.
John the Divine: I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending.., the
first and the last (1:8,11).
According to him, it (as a monogram, without letters) (ill. 2, 3, 5) served
Constantine the Philosopher in his choice of a sacred grapheme of the initial
Glagolitic letter probably through its use as a sign of punctuation, invocation etc.
The same letter played in all probability the role of a final sacred symbol as well.
The letter alpha of the staurogram-chrysmon was used in modified form
for one of the last Slavonic letters iat, and took the 32nd or 33rd place in the
Glagolitic alphabet which is also symbolic from the point of view of letter
mysticism.
The Greek letter omega which often has an angular form in the ancient
Christian staurograms was copied for the Glagolitic letter (sha). It occupies
29th place in the Glagolitic alphabet and takes the lead in the series of specific
Slavonic letters at its end. Probably because of the sacred character of its initial
graphics it was also preserved in the Cyrillic alphabet.
In the Glagolitic alphabet the angular omega formed the basis of
two more Glagolitic letters and which occupied by no coincidence places
after (az) and (sha).
As a successor of omega Constantine-Cyril the Philosopher introduced
another grapheme: (ot). Its features show that it is a doubled rendering of
the ordinary O (). Thus it corresponds in principle to the description of
omega as round and double by the Gnostic Zosimus. It seems that as an
important sacred letter as early as the late classical stocheia in the Glagolitic
alphabet it probably bore the name of W (the Great On) known from
the Glagolitic alphabet. In any case it was considered to be a central letter symbol
in the anagram of the existing God. The 25th position which it received
in the new alphabet demonstrates that it was put in the first place after the
number of the letters established in the Greek alphabet. In such a way the creator
of the Glagolitic alphabet probably proved the extended letter makeup of his
creation.
Therefore, by decomposing into parts an iconic formula of the Christian
God which was established by tradition, the first apostle of Slavonic literature
laid the basis for defending the "divine" nature of his work, consistently upheld
by Hrabur the Monk and the Slavonic grammarians in the Middle Ages.
