TIMING OF CATASTROPHIC GEOPHYSICAL EVENTS ON THE

PACIFIC RING OF FIRE.

By T.E. McLaughlin, P.E.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
March 22, 2017

This article is an original report by the author, a licensed professional engineer in

Florida, who has spent 20++ years researching the timing of major, catastrophic geo-
physical events [earthquakes of magnitude 8.8M and above, and explosive volcanic
events of land-altering magnitude], to attempt to determine a correlation between the
timing of such events and periodic, repeating time in days, or planetary alignments
such as new and full moons, or solar and lunar eclipses. As explained in the following
paragraphs, a periodic cycle in days does appear to exist, but the correlation to solar
and lunar events remains under investigation.

To begin the research, a chart of events was produced which includes earthquakes,
volcanic activity, and other noteworthy geophysical events from historical records.
This chart is marked Master List, and is included in the appendix, attached hereto.

A second chart [included at the end of this text] was then produced using data from
the Master List; this second chart includes only magnitude 8.8 and above earth-
quakes, plus several recent catastrophic volcanic eruptions, all of which lie on the
Pacific Ring of Fire. A few events of lesser magnitude have been included as test
events, to demonstrate the applicability of the timing sequence, and how it applies
only to magnitude 8.8 and above earthquakes, and truly catastrophic, explosive vol-
canic eruptions. Events on this list were not ranked by number of deaths, or reports
of the value of property damage. For purposes of this report, such information is of
side interest only. For example, a volcanic eruption could take place on the Kamchat-
ka Peninsula, produce no property damage, and result in no casualties, because the
area is uninhabited, but the eruption could be catastrophic and very significant in a
geologic context.

The second chart, dated February 13, 2017, begins with the explosive, catastrophic
eruption on Krakatau Island in what is now Indonesia on August 27, 1883. This event
is well-recorded in historical documents, the most accurate being ships logs, which
described tsunami wave height, destruction, and sound events, which occurred with
the explosions. Examining other events on this chart, a loose 389 - 400+ day cycle x N
can be seen from the Krakatau event to the Chilean earthquake of 1960. However,
there is no exact cycle length which can be extracted during this period of historical
events.

page one
Moving forward in time to the December 26, 2004 event centered on Banda Aceh,
Sumatra, we see the appearance of a distinct 378 - 380 day cycle x N, which appears
to hold to the present time. Again, this cycle applies only to the Pacific Ring of Fire
and events thereon. From the Banda Aceh event to Fukushima, March 11, 2011, we
see there is a near-exact 378 day x 6 period, or 2268 days, compared to 2266 days ac-
tual time between those two events. From the Mt. Pinatubo eruption on June 15, 1991
to the Mt. Sinabung eruption on May 21, 2016, there is a loose correlation of 9107
days or 24 x 379.458 days. Between Fukushima and Mt. Sinabung, we have 1898
days, or another loose correlation to 5 x 379 days = 1895 days.

Taking the 2266 days between Banda Aceh and Fukushima, we extrapolate another
2266 days, and according to calendar calculations, this gives us a date of May 24,
2017. The second, compressed chart to which we are referring indicates a higher
than normal probability of a catastrophic event occurring within the window of 3 days
plus or minus, centered around May 24, 2017. We have noted New Zealand on the
chart because it has experienced recent, significant earthquakes, and a marine mam-
mal beaching occurred there on February 10, 2017. Russian research indicates ma-
rine mammal beachings may be predictive of a forthcoming geophysical event.

Conversely, a major event in the Seattle - Vancouver - Puget Sound area will have a
higher than normal probability of occurring around May 24, 2017, which is on the 378
day cycle. If an event does not occur in 2017, the probability will increase for a time
window of 5 days or so, plus or minus, centered on June 06, 2018, and so on. This
timing sequence can apply anywhere on the Pacific Ring of Fire, but we are looking at
both New Zealand and the Cascadia Subduction Zone.

Double earthquakes hit the Seattle - Vancouver area on February 22, 2017:
a) - West of Vancouver Island @ M4.8.
b) - Hood Canal, depth 4 Km, 55 Km SW of Downtown Seattle, M4.2.

Both quakes occurred in the Cascadia Subduction Zone, an area which includes the
Juan de Fuca Plate, the Gorda Plate, and the North American Plate. These plate inter-
sections are relatively shallow, and USGS predicts an event centered on the Puget
Sound area in their web page titled Pacific Northwest Geologic Mapping and Urban
Hazards. Other predictions refer to an M9+ event, including U.S. FEMA, which has a
publication titled Cascadia Rising 2016, which describes a simulated response for
an M9 event in the Oregon-Washington area.

page two
from U.S. FEMA Report: Cascadia Rising 2016

page three
Figure 1 from USGS web page: Pacific Northwest Geologic Mapping
and Urban Hazards, [web site listed in bibliography].

We reiterate that this report indicates only an elevated window of probability which
occurs every 378 - 379 days on the Pacific Ring of Fire. We are not predicting an
event, just illustrating elevated probability for a catastrophic event on the Pacific Ring
of Fire. We have noted New Zealand because of recent earthquake events there. We
also note the recent earthquakes in the Seattle & Vancouver Island area, which indi-
cate that the plates are active, and may be indicative of a major forthcoming geologic
event during one of the upcoming probability windows.

page four
NOTES:

For reference it should be noted that the apparent 378 - 379 day time period is a near
exact 54 week cycle, or close to one earth year plus 2 weeks. 365 days minus one
day = 364 days or 52 weeks. Taking this number [364 days] and adding 2 weeks = 378
days, which is the apparent base number for the 378 days x N repeating cycle period
which has been seen since the Banda Aceh event on December 26, 2004.
