Have you ever been in an argument with a sibling and you kept using a sarcastic tone because
you knew that was the only thing you could do? Well, this is the Brutus and Antony funeral
speech which while it showed lots of emotion, evidence, irony, trust and a ton of sarcasm Antony
seemed to be more persuasive. This play was written by William Shakespeare in 1599 about the
tragedy of Julius Caesar and this scene is about the speech that Brutus and Antony for Caesars
funeral. I wrote about the Ethos, pathos and logos of Brutus and Antonys speech
Brutus and Antony both bring up good reasons why Caesar should have or shouldnt have
been killed. Brutus believed it was a good idea to kill Caesar because he saw Caesar needed to
die for his ambitionwhich meant that Caesar was power hungry (3.2). Brutus also thought
Caesar needed to die because if the people of Rome would prefer that Caesar were living they
would die all slaves since Caesar was power hungry (3.2). Antony does not believe that Caesar
deserved death because he was not the person that Brutus described him as. Antony says that if
Caesar is such a bad man then why had He hath brought many captives home to Rome which
then Caesar filled the ransomsof their general coffers so they could stay (3.2). Antony says if
Caesar was such a bad man then why did he leave a will for the people of Rome which Brutus
will not let him read which is so amazing that you will want to Soak a napkin in his blood and
get some of his hair just so that you can pass it on to the next generation until it eventually
becomes priceless. The will says that the people of Rome are [Caesars] heirs (3.2). The will
says that the people of rome are the ones that gets 75 drachmas each when Caesar is gone.
Brutus and Antony try to express their emotion to get the audience on their side. Brutus
shows that he was close to caesar saying that his love to Caesar was no less than his because
they were probably best friends (3.2). Brutus also explains that it was not that [he] loved Caesar
less, but that [he] loved Rome more so to make sure that Rome did not become disastrous he
had to kill Caesar before he did something that Rome would regret. Antony not believing Brutus
for one second exclaims that his heart is in the coffin there with Caesar which shows that he is
sad to see Caesar go (III.II). Antony mourns for Caesars death when he insisted that the evil
that men do lives after them [while] the good is oft interred with their bones (III.II). Antony is
trying to state that the evil Caesar did should now be left in the past. Since people's skin and
body leaves after they die but their bones are the only thing that stay on the earth,so what theyre
saying is that the evil should be forgotten and the good people did stays with them in their bones
Brutus and Antony show persuasive reasons about why they should be trusted by the
audience. Antony tries to gain trust of the audience by saying that he was [Caesars] friend so
that they know that Antony knew Caesar well(III.II). One of the ways Antony tries to gain trust
is by calling the people as Friends,Romans, [and] countrymen trying to talk in a calm and nice
manner so that they dont feel as if he were the enemy of all of this(III.II). Antony tries to get the
audiences trust by telling them that he knew Caesar really well and that he knew Caesar wasnt
the kind of person who would ruin Rome. Brutus tries also to explain that he was a friend of
Caesar saying as Caesar loved me, I wept for him to show that what he did was not an easy job
to do, hes saying that it is hard to kill your best friend but he had to kill Caesar(III.II). Brutus
tried to gain the peoples trust is by exclaiming that he was Caesars best friend, but, even though
they were best friends Brutus could not wait around and see Rome go down and eventually
probably be destroyed.
