Mathematical Methods for Engineers 1

Assignment 2, Study Period 2, 2016

This assignment is worth 10% of marks for the course.

Show your working. Marks are generally allocated to the various steps through a
solution to reach an answer. Show all necessary steps so that the reader can follow your
solution procedure. Sometimes a phrase in English is useful to explain your steps.

Draw graphs by hand. Any sketches requested should be drawn by hand.

Write your own solutions. You may discuss your work with other students, but you
must write up your solutions yourself. You are not allowed to use anyone elses written
work when you are writing up your assignment.

Acknowledge help and joint work. If you receive help from another source (e.g.
students, tutors, friends, internet sources) you must make a note of it on your assignment.

Late penalties: Assignments submitted late, without an extension being granted, at-
tract a penalty of 10% of the maximum marks for each day or part thereof beyond the
due date and time. Submissions will not be accepted, without prior negotiation, more
than one week beyond the due date.

Question 1. 4+3+4+3=14 marks

Given vectors a = h2, 1, 0i , b = h3, 1, 2i and c = h1, 2, 2i

a) Find the angle between a and b .

b) Determine which (if any) of a , b and c are perpendicular to each other .

c) Calculate the projection of b onto a c .

d) Find (b a) c .

Question 2. 11+4=15 marks

Consider the function y = sin x 12 cos x + 23 on [0, ].

a) Show that
dy 18 cos2 x + 23 cos x 6
= .
dx 12 cos x + 23

An open-ended right cone is required to have a volume of m (supposing we could
3
measure that volume). Find the height and radius that minimise the cones surface area
(ignoring the circular base).

1
The volume of the cone is V (r, h) = r2 h , surface area is S(r, h) = r r2 + h2 .

a) Identify the definite integral which the expression represents.

b) Evaluate the limit by performing the integration.

x (5 + ln x)

Question 6. 8+7=15 marks

a) Find the length of the curve x2/3 + y 2/3 = 4 from x = 1 to x = 8 .

b) Find the area enclosed by the curves x = y 2 + 2 and y = x 8 .
