Management

University of Karachi
Theory and Practice

Phase - II
Organizational Structure

This is the foundation of the report, if students perform this step in the correct manner the
remaining parts of the report would be easily performed. In this part each group is required to
transform the already established management system operating in the selected organization.

In order to do so, following are some examples of questions and procedures, groups need to
carry out:

Interview the owner / employer of the organization;

Inquire about the history of the organization;
Discuss the success factors of the organization and how management evaluate them;
Understand the management system operating in the organization (for example, how
different tasks are performed);
Number of employees working in the organization;
Identify different management levels;
Draw hierarchy by designation to analyse the authority and accountability of each
managerial level;
Identify the chain of command;
Identify the flow of information and communication;
Interview employees of each managerial level on sample basis;
Inquire about any dispute occurred in the past and how it was resolved;
Is management satisfied with their current managerial system;
Do they consider to take advices from different sources to improve their system (such as
employees feedback, customers complains or third party evaluation);
How management evaluate its own managerial system; and
How often management proposes improvements in it.

Above questions and procedures would be helpful in understanding the managerial system of
the organization but students are advised not to confined their selves to these only and also
establish their own ways for extracting the information.

Once students take proper understanding of the managerial system, they are required to write
a brief article explaining that system. This article would be included in the Managerial
Structure of an Organization part of the report.

Students are advised to properly explain this part during in presentation within three and half
or max four minutes.
