EE4307: Control System Design and Simulation

Project Assignment

Please
1. Write your Name, Matriculation Number, Module Code (EE4307) on the
cover page,
2. List your answers in order,
3. Staple answering sheets together, and
4. Submit your report to Sam Ge (underneath the door of Room E4-05-28) by
23 March 2017.

Based on the lecture notes, and any additional reading materials of yours, answer
the following questions:
1. In general, almost all physical or engineering systems are nonlinear.
Explain the necessity and validity of linear system theory in practice.
2. Briefly discuss the underlying relationship between the continuous and
discrete time models of a linear time invariant system.
3. Assume that the closed-loop systems of civil airlines and fighter aircrafts
can be approximated by second order systems. If you were the engineer,
discuss the suitable choices of the damping ratio for the two different
types of systems, and explain your reasons.
4. Consider the impulse functions:
g1 (t ) 0.7 t 0.1t
g 2 (t ) 0.8 * 0.73t
Their impulse responses and step responses (scanned from the text book)
are shown in the figure below:

Figure 2.3-2 Samples are collected in second.

Explain the correctness of the figures!

5. For the internal model description of a water tank:

d a 2g 1
h( t ) h( t ) u( t )
dt A A

q(t ) a 2 g h(t )
(i) For constant u0 , find the equilibrium point: ( x0 , u0.)
(ii) Around the equilibrium point, find the corresponding linear model.

6. For the following dynamics of balancing system in the lecture,

( + ) + cos = + sin 2 +
( + 2 ) + cos = sin

(i) What is the equilibrium point?

(ii) Around the equilibrium point, find the corresponding linear model.
