Cranial Nerves Peripheral

Anatomy & Function

Welke, Ph.D.
Objectives
*Review and understand the following nerve fiber/axon modalities
and learn which cranial nerves contain those modalities:
o GSA (General Sensory Afferent)
o GSE (General Sensory Efferent)
o GVA (General Visceral Afferent)
o GVE (General Visceral Efferent)
o SVE (Special Visceral Efferent)
o SVA (Special Visceral Afferent)
o SSA (Special Sensory Afferent)
*Review the major foramina of the skull and learn which cranial
nerves course through the various formina.
*Know the structures that the branches of the cranial nerves
innervate and what fiber/axon type innervates those structures.
*Understand the clinical correlates of cranial nerve damage as well
as any clinical deficit that would arise from lesions to the peripheral
branches of those cranial nerves.
