OUTCOMES FROM ALBERTA PROGRAM OF STUDIES

General A: Students will acquire skills through a variety of developmentally appropriate movement activities; dance,
Learning games, types of gymnastics, individual activities and activities in an alternative environment; e.g., aquatics
Outcomes: and outdoor pursuits.
C: Students will interact positively with others.

Specific A86 select, combine and perform manipulative skills by using elements of space awareness, effort and
Learning relationships, with and without objects, to improve performance
Outcomes: C83 demonstrate etiquette and fair play

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Students will:
1. Describe the situations in which one would use the overhead and underhand clear
2. Demonstrate proper overhead and underhand clear technique during activities

ASSESSMENTS
Observations: - Students will work cooperatively with each other and show fair play amongst
classmates during all activities/drills.
- Students will perform a high, deep clear, aimed towards the back of the court and have
students think about spatial awareness and why we would aim a clear there

Key Questions: 1. What are the main skill cues to keep in mind when performing a clear (overhand and
underhand)?
2. Is a clear an offensive or defensive shot?

Products/Performan - The clear is hit high and aimed for the back of the court
ces: - These badminton shots give you more time to return to your base and prepare for the
next shot. The shuttle is hit with your racket face leaning slightly backwards.
- Students are listening when instruction is given
- Students are trying their best at the skill, even though they may not be that good at at it
- Students are encouraging other students and giving positive reinforcement

LEARNING RESOURCES CONSULTED MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT

Alberta Program of Studies 30+ Rackets
20-30 birdies if possible
6 Nets with poles

PROCEDURE
Prior to lesson Write the agenda on whiteboard before class, ensure equipment room is unlocked, and basketball
nets are put away.

Introduction Time

Attention Grabber We are going to jump right into one of the most popular shot in badminton

Lesson Plan Template ED 3501 (Version C)
Assessment of - Students are aware of the different court boundaries in badminton
Prior Knowledge - Students are aware of various faults that are committed in the sport and
basic rules that are associated with the game

Expectations for - Students will not talk when instruction is being given. If students are
Learning and talking, I will simply wait till everyone is silent before continuing.
Behaviour - No banging of rackets on the floor or against other ones, if students do it
will result in a 10 pushup punishment. This goes for the entire unit.
- Students do not have to be exceptional at the skill, but I ask that they try
their best, and to understand that they are being marked more on
improvement, and less on skill level.

Transition to Body Warm up:

- Set up courts and rally with a partner 10 min
- Previous Bird Catch activity
Body Time

Learning Activity Instruction/Development of the Clear: Class Discussion and

#1 Demonstration

Overhead clear (learning skill cues)- After each demonstration-students will

do it
Why would we use a shot that is not hit hard, but high and deep in the court?
- Defensive shot
- Get back into position
- Get your opponent out of position
- Give yourself time
Skill cues to remember
- Racquet arm back
- Cock/bend wrist
- Keep weight over the back foot
- Lead with elbow and shift weight to forward foot (step to target)
- Contact shuttle slightly in front of you
- Racquet face is slightly towards the ceiling
- Want to hit the birdie high and deep to the court 10 min
- Follow through

Underhand clear (learning skill cues)

The overhead shot is a defensive shot that we use when the birdie is hit at us at tall
height; when do you think we would use the underhand clear?
o When the bird is hit low at us and we want to buy time (still a defensive shot)
(Choose it instead of a overhead clear in these circumstances)
Similar skill cues to the overhead shot except it is from below:
- Racquet arm is below shoulder
- Cock/bend wrist
- Keep weight over the back foot
- Lead with elbow and shift weight to forward foot (step to target)
- Contact shuttle slightly in front of you
- Make a wide semicircle pattern with racquet
- Racquet face is open (parallel to floor)
- Drive the birdie up and deep
- Rotate body into shot and follow through
Teacher Notes: Assessments:
Assessments/ - Students understand that a clear is a defensive shot
Differentiation
- Students hit nice high clears aimed towards the back of the court (to buy

yourself time in a game situation)

Learning Activity Longest rally contest

#2 - In pairs, rally over the net using only clears
- You are playing cooperatively not competitively, so hit the ball high and
5 min
give your partner lots of time
- When the birdie hits the floor, the pair must have a seat
- It is an inter-class competition; last pair standing wins
Teacher Notes: Differentiation:
Assessments/ - Instead of doing elimination if some students are really struggling, make
Differentiation it a timed race. This way if the birdie touches the ground, the partner
group is not out of he game, but simply has to restart their count.
- This way, students are able to get more touches in, rather than always
getting out first right away and sitting on the sidelines.

Learning Activity Racquet Elimination Game (Clears)

#3 - Students will get into teams of 4
- We are going to play a game that helps us practice the overhead and
underhand clears
- Line up in a vertical line on one side of the net and face the other vertical
line of four
- Everyone begins with a racquet
- Using only overhead and underhand clear (no smash or drop shots yet),
rally back and forth
- The front person hits it over and then runs to back of the line
- Every time a birdie falls in bounds on a teams side, whoever was in front
eliminates his or her racket (place it down, do NOT just drop it)
- So once you are down to less racquets than people, you must hit the bird,
pass off the racquet to the person behind you and then run to the back of
the line
- Communication is key does the person behind you have a racquet or
15 min
not?
- You will find that you have to emphasize hitting it to the back court or
your team will not have time to return it
- Since we are working on clears, if it falls within the space between the
net and the short service line just start the point again no elimination on
either side

Teacher Notes: Assessment:

Assessments/ - Students are hitting high clears to each other and quickly moving out of
Differentiation
the way so other players on the team can continue the rally.
- Students are in a ready position when getting ready to hit the shot.
Closure Time

Consolidation of - Clears made from students are high and directed towards the back of
Learning: the court.
- Students are able to identify when to use an overhand and underhand

Transition To Next We will be continuing to build on our badminton skills, with next lesson

Lesson working on serving.
