Magnitude Versus Intensity
Magnitude and Intensity measures different characteristics of earthquakes. Magnitude measures the energy released at the
source of the earthquake. Magnitude is determine from measuring seismographs. Intensity measures the strength of shaking
produced by earthquake at a certain location. Intensity is determined from the effects on people, human structures, and the
natural environment.

The following table gives intensities that are typically observe at locations near the epicenter of earthquakes of different
magnitude. Magnitude in the Richter Scale Vs. Modified Mercalli Scale.

Magnitude Intensity Description Peak

Acceleration

1.0 ~ 3.4 I I. Not felt except by a very few under especially favorable conditions.

3.5 ~ 4.2 II ~ III II. Felt only by few persons at rest, especially upper floors of buildings.

III. Felt quite noticeably by persons indoors, especially on upper floors
of buildings. Many people dont recognize it as an earthquake.

Standing motor cars may rock slightly. Vibrations similar to the
 passing truck. Duration estimated

4.3 ~ 4.8 IV ~ V IV. Felt indoors by many, outdoors by few during the day. At night, 0.015g up to
some awakened. Dishes, windows, doors disturbed, walls make 0.02g

cracking sound. Sensation like heavy truck striking building.
 Standing motor cars rocked noticeably.

 V. Felt by nearly everyone, many awakened. Some dishes, windows 0.03g up to
broken. Unstable object overturned. Pendulum clock may stop. 0.04g

4.9 ~ 6.1 VI ~ VII VI. Felt by all, many, many frightened. Some heavy furniture move, a 0.04g up to
Few instances of fallen cement plaster. Damage slight. 0.08g

VII. Damage negligible in buildings of good design and construction. 0.08g up to
Slight to moderate in well-built ordinary structures. Considerable 0.16g

damage in poorly built or badly designed structures. Some
 chimneys broken.

6.2 ~ 6.9 VIII ~ IX VIII. Damage slightly in specially designed structures, considerable

damage in ordinary substantial buildings with partial collapse.
 0.16g up to
Damage great in poorly built structures. Fall of chimneys, factory
stacks, columns, monuments, and walls. Heavy furniture 0.32g
 overturned.

IX. Damage considerable in specially designed structures, well-

designed frame structures thrown out of plumb. Damage great in 0.32g up to
substantial buildings, with partial collapsed. Buildings shifted off 0.55g

foundations.

7.0 ~ 7.3 X X. Some well-built wooden structures destroyed, most masonry and 0.55g up to
frame structures destroyed with foundations. Rails bent. 0.80g
 And And
XI. Damage considerable in specially designed structures, well- 0.80g up to

7.4 ~ 8.1 Higher designed frame structures thrown out of plumb. Damage great in 1.0g
substantial buildings, with partial collapsed. Buildings shifted off

Higher foundations.

XII. Total damage. Lines of sight and level are destroyed. Objects More than
 thrown into the air. 1.0g
