Review Stations (Expressions Unit Test Review)
Learning goals: Previous knowledge required for this activity:
Addition and subtraction
SWBAT simplify an expression using Multiplication and division
the correct order of operations Order of operations
SWBAT define a variable and create
an expression based off a real world
scenario Materials required for this activity:
SWBAT translate a given algebraic Printed out questions for each station
expression into a verbal expression and Large poster paper to tape questions on for
vice versa each station
SWBAT add and subtract polynomials Each student needs a pencil and a piece of
using the distributive property paper to record individual answers
SWBAT correctly use the distributive
property when asked to simplify an

Activity flow:
Activity 1: Assign groups by popsicle sticks Announce reminder: Expression unit test
and explain directions (5 minutes) tomorrow Friday 10/7/16

We are going to randomly assign groups. When they

come in, I will pull 4 popsicle sticks from the cup
and that will be the first group. Those students will
move to station number 1. We will continue until all
5 stations have a group at them. Then we will start
the timer and begin. They will have 6 minutes at each
station. They must finish the questions taped onto the
poster at their station. If they finish with time to
spare, they will flip up the sheet of paper to reveal
the bonus question and try to complete that with the
remaining time.

Activity 2: Stations (45 minutes) The stations are as follows:

I. Order of Operations
7 Stations / 6 minutes per station
II. Writing Expressions

III. Translating Between Verbal & Algebraic

Expressions

IV. Adding and Subtracting Polynomials

V. The Distributive Property and Combining

Like Terms

The specific questions at each station are attached

below.
I. Order of Operations
1. Simplify: (n + 7)2
2. Explain the difference between the expressions (4n)2 and 4n2 , then evaluate both expressions
when n = 2
3. Evaluate: a) 4 + 9 * 8 3 b) 20 5 * 22

4. BONUS Would you be happy if you received the following score on a test? Why or why
not? 100 50/5 * 10

II. Writing Expressions

1. Ms. Curry owns a hair salon. One day, she gave 12 haircuts. She earned $19.95 for each and
received an average tip of $2 for each haircut. (p.30)
a. Write an expression to determine the total amount she earned that day
b. How much did Ms. Curry earn?

2. Use the table for the following questions (a,b,c):

Available Insurance Plans Monthly Charges

Coverage Medical Dental Vision

Employee $78 $20 $12

Family (additional cost) $50 $15 $7

a) Write an expression that could be used to calculate the cost of medical, dental, and vision
insurance for an employee for 6 months.
b) How much does it cost for an employee to get all three types of insurance for 6 months?
c) How much would an employee expect to pay for individual and family insurance for medical and
dental coverage per year?

3. BONUS You are switching cable companies and want to find the cheapest option. A cable company
Comcast charges a monthly fee of $55.00 and $5.00 per movie rented. A different cable company AT&T
charges a monthly fee of $35.00 and $10.00 per movie rented. Assuming you rent 3 movies each month,
which cable company is cheaper for you to sign a year-long contract with? How about a 6 month
contract? Explain your reasoning.

III. Translating Between Verbal & Algebraic Expressions

1. Write an algebraic expression for The difference of three times a number and twenty. Then
evaluate that expression when the number is 4.
2. Create an expression with at least two terms. Then make a table for that expression and substitute
in 5 different values, at least two of those values being negative.

3. BONUS Write the verbal expression for n2 + 16

IV. Adding and Subtracting Polynomials
1. a) (14a2 b + 3b + a + 6ab2 ) + ( 2ab2 + 3a b 2a2 b) b) ( 4mn + 3m) ( 2mn + 2m + 4n)
2. If the perimeter of this triangle is P = 14x + 25y , find the missing side.

3. BONUS: Given the sides of this triangle, find the perimeter.

V. The Distributive Property and Combining Like Terms

12x30y+9x
1. Simplify the expression
3
2. Simplify the expression 7(x2 4x + 2) + 2(3x2 4x + 1)
3. Simplify the expression 21 (4a + 6y 10) + 6 7a

4. BONUS Simplify the expression (x 4)2
