Last week, the Jackson school journal selected junior Brian whistler as its student
of the month Brian is the founder of the community service club and is looking for
new members. Heres our interview with him

Tell us about your club

The community service club meets after school on Wednesdays. We talk about
different things that we can do for the community.

What types of activities does the club do?

On Saturday mornings, we volunteer at the local homeless shelter. We help cook

and serve breakfast.

How did you get the idea for this club?

Well, it all started a couple of weeks before Christmas. My family was discussing
how we spend so much money on gifts, and my father suggested that we donate
our gifts to a charity. I was so excited about getting Christmas presents, and all I
could think about was a tree with nothing underneath. It was awful.

What happened?

Well, my mom suggested serving Christmas dinner at a local shelter instead. It

wasnt my idea of a fun Christmas, but it was better than not getting presents! It
wasnt easy thought. Getting all of the food ready and serving I ourselves was a lot
of work. But it was worthwhile. I felt like I was doing something good for the
community and that made me feel good.

How did you turn that experience into the community service club?

Well, I told the guys on the soccer team about it. And a few of them wanted to do it,
too. So we started going to the shelter every week, soon, other kids at school were
asking about it, so I thought it would be great to make it an official school club. We
have over 30 members!

Thats great! So, do you have a message for you readers?

Sure. Cooking and serving breakfast may not seem like a good way to spend your
Saturday mornings, but its important for us to do our part. And we have a lot of fun
doing it.

Reality TV is king

In the United States in the 1970s, television game shows were the rage. In the
1980s, news shows were popular and the 1990s saw the rise of talk shows. And
since 2000, reality TV shows have become so hot that new popular type of show.
In fact, really TV has become so hot that new shows seem to appear almost
every week.

In the United States, the reality TV craze began in the summer of 2000 after
thousands of people saw survivor, one of the first American reality shows. People
liked the idea of watching real people- not actors- do crazy things to win contest.
Reality fans watch contestants living on a desert island or racing around the world.
They watch contestants eating weird things and fighting among themselves. Fans
cheer for their favorites to win a prize for being the most talented, the strongest, or
the most beautiful.

When some fans cant watch their favorite shows, they spend hours reading and
writing blogs about them. What does all this say about reality TV fans? It says that
they cant get enough of their favorite shows! The television networks know this, so
they keep inventing new shows to keep fans watching.

In fact, one TV network is planning a reality show about cats. Ten cats will move
from animal shelters into a beautiful big house. Words that show what the cats are
thinking will appear in pop-up bubbles.
The winning cat will get a new owner and a job advertising cat food! The other cats
will get new owners and free cat food. On this reality TV show, everyone will be a
winner.

Cmo se te ocurri la idea de este club?
Bueno, todo comenz hace un par de semanas antes de Navidad. Mi familia
estaba discutiendo cmo gastamos tanto dinero en regalos, y mi padre sugiri que
donamos nuestros dones a una organizacin benfica . Estaba tan emocionado
por recibir regalos de Navidad, y lo nico que poda pensar era en un rbol sin
nada debajo . Fue horrible .
Qu ha pasado ?
Bueno, mi madre sugiri que sirve la cena de Navidad en un refugio local . No era
mi idea de una diversin de la Navidad , pero era mejor que no recibir regalos! No
era fcil pensar. Obtener toda la comida preparada y servir yo nos era mucho
trabajo . Pero vali la pena. Me sent como si estuviera haciendo algo bueno para
la comunidad y que me hizo sentir bien .
Cmo convertir esa experiencia en el club de servicio a la comunidad ?
Bueno , le dije a los chicos en el equipo de ftbol de ello. Y algunos de ellos
queran hacerlo , tambin. As que empezamos a ir a la vivienda cada semana ,
pronto, otros nios en la escuela estaban preguntando sobre ello, as que pens
que sera genial para convertirlo en un club de la escuela oficial. Contamos con
