Bangkok

Bangkok also known as the Venice of the East or the City of the Angels, is one of the most
visited cities in the world. The traditional Thai name is Krung Thep Mahanakhon Amon
Rattanakosin Mahinthara Yuthaya Mahadilok Phop Noppharat Ratchathani Burirom
Udomratchaniwet Mahasathan Amon Piman Awatan Sathit Sakkathattiya Witsanukam Prasit which
makes Bangkok the city with the largest name in the world.

Location
Bangkok is the capital and also the largest city of Thailand. Thailand officially known as the
Kingdom of Thailand, is located in the center of Indochinese Peninsula in Southeast Asia. It is the
worlds 51st largest country.

Transport to Bangkok
Some of the countries from Southeast Asia, including Thailand do not request visas.

You can get to Bangkok by plane. There are two airports in the city: Suvarnabhumi Airport
and Don Muang Airport. Both of them are placed 30 km away from the center of Bangkok. The two
of them offer currency exchange, free Wi-Fi, transport to the city, maps and shops.

Another way to reach Bangkok is by bus. There are three big bus terminals. The buses are
much cheaper than an airplane ticket but not always safer. The largest terminal is Notherm Bus
Terminal, also known as Mo Chit 2. Beside this, there are two more: Eastern Bus Terminal and
Southern Bus Terminal.
The train can be another way to arrive in Bangkok. The metropolis has four train stations.
The Hualamphong Train Station is the most known train station; it was built during the reign of
King Rama VI.

Not many people choose as a transport to Bangkok the ship, but there are some cruises that
come close to the city. The big ships anchor at Laem Chabang Port, which is situated at about 90
minutes southeast of Bangkok and the modest-sized at Khalong Toei Port which is closer to
Bangkoks city center.
Not a very good idea, but another way to get into Bangkok is by car. Its not a very good
idea because the city is very crowded and it can take a lot of time to get from a side to the other side
of the city.

Climate
Bangkok is one of the hottest cities in the world. It is warm all the time of the year, by warm
we mean that the daytime temperatures are over 30C, but they do cool down in the night getting to
20C. Bangkok has three seasons: the cool season, the hot season and the wet season.

The most pleasant time to visit is the cool season which is from November to February
when there are under 35C, this is also the driest period. Even the Emerald Buddha Statue in Wat
Phra Kaew wears a scarf during this period.

The worst time to visit the city is in the hot season, from March to April, when
temperatures are over 35C. The tourists should not be surprised if the temperature exceeds 40C.

The wet season runs from May till October. At this time of the year there are a lot of
rainfalls and by rainfalls we mean downpours, resulting a lot of floods all over the city. Its not all
bad though, the afternoon showers are a pleasant way to cool down. They can last all day but usually
not more than an hour. Extreme rainfall happens in September and October, so the best we can do is
avoid these months.

Accomodation
In Bangkok tourists have quite a lot of accommodation options. Bangkok has some of the
best hotels in the world. Each district has some hotels where the tourists can be accommodated, but
the most expensive hotels are found in districts Siam Square, Sukhumvit and Silom.1

In the district Siam Square travelers can choose hotels with cheap prices like Bangkok City Suite,
Reno Hotel, White Lodge, mid-range hotels which are represented by Bangkok City Inn and
Patunwan House and the expensive hotels as InterContinental Hotel, Novotel, Holiday Inn, Sivatel
Bangkok, Arcadia Suites.2

Sukhumvit is another district which has many hotels with cheap prices, mid-range hotels and
expensive hotels. Hotels which have cheap prices are Atlanta Hotel, Maxims Inn and hotels like
Ambassador Hotel, Royal Asia Lodge, Nana Hotel are considered mid- range hotels. If the tourists
prefer hotels which have high prices, the most recommended are JW Marriott Hotel, Sheraton
Grande Sukhumvit and Compass Skyview Hotel.3

The third district where the travellers can accommodate is Silom. Here they find three categories of
prices like the other two districts. The hotels with expensive prices are Ramada Plaza Menam
Riverside, Tawana Bangkok, Banyan Tree, Mandarin Oriental and Triple Two Hotel.4

The districts Rattanakosin and Dust also have hotels where tourists can accommodate, like Aurum,
The Siam and Praya Palazzo.56
The rooms in the mid-range hotels have air-conditioning, mini bar, tv, Wi-fi internet acces, private
bathrooms.7 The expensive hotels have rooms with sofa, chair, desk, mini refrigerator, private
bathrooms, slippers, mini bar, coffee maker. The hotels have spa, fitness, restaurants, jacuzzi, and
swimming pools.8

Local attractions
Most tourists attractions in Bangkok are found on the island of Rattanakosin. Bangkok has hundred
of temples, but the most populars are Temple of Dawn (WatArun), The Grand Palace and Buddha
Temple (Wat Pho).9

Temple of Dawn (WatArun)

Wat Pho is also a unique place because it has the largest statue of Buddha in Thailand.
Buddha statue is 46 meters long and is covered with gold.
Siam Ocean World is another important attraction which should be included in a trip. Siam Ocean
World is the largest aquarium in Southeast Asia.
Damnoen Saduak Floating Markets are the most lively and popular floating markets in
Thailand, where a traveler can see a wide range of products, one of the most picturesque sights in
the area. Lots of small boats offer through water channels vegetables, fruits and other delicacies.

Lumphini Park is one of the best places in Bangkok for relaxing because
here are tall palm trees and other tropical plantations and is far from the noisy
streets.10

Another attraction for tourists is Chao Phraya river where they can see a beautiful landscape and an
exotic combination of avant-garde and tradition.11
Bangkok is a great place to go to the movies. Cinemas have world-class standards and show the
latest Hollywood and Thai releases.
The city has many festivals as Chinese New Year Festival in January or February, the
Festival of Lights which in the western calendar this usually falls in November and the Royal
Ploughing Ceremony in May.12

The travellers should visit the National Museum where they can learn about thai history, and
the Museum of Siam.13

Local food and local drinks

Thai dishes are divided into central, northern, northeastern and southern cuisine, but in Bangkok all
the cuisines are present.14
The thai food is known for being spicy. One distinctive aspect of thai food is the use of fresh herbs
and spices. Also in nearly every dish is included food fermented fish sauce. 15
Pad Thai is one of the most popular thai dishes, it consists of rice noodles fried in fish sauce,
egg, tamarind juice, pepper, pea pods, shrimp or chicken.16

In Bangkok, travellers can eat traditional soup like Spicy Shrimp Soup which contains
shrimp, mushrooms, tomatoes, lemongrass, galangal, chilies, kaffir lime leaves, onions and
herbs.17Another dish is thai curry. There are a lot types of curry, for example Red Curry made with
meat, red curry paste , coconut milk and kaffir lime leaves, or Green Chicken Curry which has fresh
chicken, eggplants, bamboo shoots and sweet basil.18

Thai noodles are popular in Bangkok and
come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes. They
are made of rice or egg noodles. Noodles are
more frequently served at street stalls that
specialize in Thai noodle dishes.19 Also the salad
is a communal dish in Thailand.
In Bangkok, street food is the most delicious food
and the prices are cheap. If the tourist wants to try
something unusual he finds in Khao San
20
Road carts which sell insects.
Thais usually consume tea, but it is served
cold. The most popular tea is based on tamarind
seeds with orange, but is very sweet. Another
drink is coconut water, obtained from young coconuts, and its served cold. 21 Thais have three
domestic beers. Also they produce rice alcohol.22
The restaurants mid-range in Bangkok are Kaloang Home Kitchen, Lek Seafood or My Choice and
the expensive thai restaurants are Celadon, Horizon, Manohra Song etc.23

Transportation
There are a lot of ways to pass through Bangkok, to get to the center of the city from the
airport or from the periphery, because the city's public transport system is fairly efficient and
convenient, altought there is still a fair amount of room for improvement to the system's integration.

The fastest way to get from the Suvarnabhumi Airport into the city is Airport Rail Link, this
way tourists can avoid Bangkok's horrible rush hour traffic. The Airport Rail Link represents a high-
speed train service to downtown Bangkok, and the trains run at an amazing 160 km/h.

Taxis are available from both of the airports and the tourists need to follow the "public taxi"
signs that lead to the outside of the airport premises, stay in line and leave their destination at the

desk. The card ticket has two sections - one to give to the driver, often with the destination written in
Thai, and a small part for complaints. With smooth traffic, which rarely occurs, the ride takes about
30 minutes, otherwise the ride lasts about 45-60 minutes. The so-called limousine taxis can be
reserved at the limousine hire counter on the second floor of Suvarnabhumi Airport.

There are also a number of public transportation buses passing through the airports. Buses
towards the centre of Bangkok are at the airport's side of the road, so they don't cross the highway.

For travelling to Bangkoks suburbs or locations within 200 km of the city, the fastest way to
get there is represented by the public minibus (minivan) services. They are running from parking
lots situated besides the Victory Monument Square (in the center of the city) and they depart when
they are full, usually every 10-30 minutes. Minivans are usually the fastest way of transportation
from the centre of the city, because they take elevated expressways right from the Victory
Monument, therefore they are avoiding traffic jams. A significant disadvantage of minibuses is that
the seat room is limited and might be not comfortable for tall people.

Hualamphong Train Station is the most important station, and tickets for trains leaving in
the same day, or the next day can be bought on the counters and you can select your seat/bunk from
a plan of the train.

Wongwien Yai Train Station only serves the rustic Mae Klong commuter line to the
fishing village of Maha Chai. Trains run roughly hourly and the trip takes about one hour. The ride is
an experience for rail fans, with a nice view on the countryside's orchards, vegetable plantations and
coconut groves.

Built in a desperate effort to ease Bangkok's insane traffic and pollution, the Skytrain covers
most of downtown and has two lines: the light green Sukhumvit Line and the dark green Silom
Line. Both lines come together at Siam, where you can interchange between them.

The MRT (metro) opened in July 2004. For now there is only one line, the Blue Line that
connects the central Hualamphong Train Station to the northern Bang Sue Train Station. There are
interchanges to the Skytrain at Si Lom, Sukhumvit and Chatuchak Park stations.
Tourists do not use the subway as much as the Skytrain, but there are some useful stops. Subway
tickets are not interchangeable with Skytrain tickets.

People can travel through Bangkok using the Chao Phraya Express Boat, wich is basically
an aquatic bus playing up and down the river.

The Saen Saep Express Boat serves the long Saen Saep Canal, one of the remaining canals
that used to flow through Bangkok. Mostly used by locals to commute to work, the tourists also can
avoid Bangkok's notorious traffic jams.

For trips outside the set routes, tourists can hire a long-tail river taxi at any major pier.
Another method of transportation is represented by the symbol of Bangkok, the much-
loved tuk-tuks: people can recognize them by their sound and smell - these three-wheeled machines
blaze around Bangkok leaving a black cloud of smog in their wake.

The motorcycle taxis arent very used because the accidents are brutally common, and
transportation of this sort is inherently hazardous. Many tourists and Thai alike recommend avoiding
them except as a last resort. They shouldnt be driven without a helmet under no circumstances.
Tourists can recognize motorcycle taxis if the they pay attention to the drivers, who are dressed in a
fluorescent yellow orange vests.24

The price and value for money

Bangkok has a variety of hotels, for every taste, so the tourists can be satisfied and they dont
have to pay an excessive amount of money. The same thing applies to caffe - bars, shopping centers
and also when it comes to public transportation.

For example, if a person chooses to go on vacantion in Bangkok and in the Phuket Islands
for 10 days at a three star hotel, the price will be 1025 . 25 The price is right because besides the
three star hotel accommodation, it includes the transport, airport taxes and breakfast at the hotel.

Each room of the hotel is equipped with a 32-inch LCD, minibar, free broadband Internet,
room service, cable/satellite TV channels, coffee / tea maker, complimentary bottled drinking water,
daily housekeeping service, hair dryer, in-room safe and international direct-line telephone. The
services are more than enough for a person to feel safe and enjoy its free time, and the price is just
right for all the facilities that the tourists can use in Bangkok. Of course, the public transportation
taxes or the entrance fees at various locations are not included, but in Bangkok this taxes are not
high at all.26

The key - seeling points

There are a few things that make Bangkok a unique city: First of all, Bangkok its reputed to
have the largest Chinatown in the world. The vast area, known locally as Yaowarat, is full of streets
and alleys that are in turn full of shops and restaurants and countless street food vendors. 27

Bangkok has near 400 temples, each one being more unique that the other and the tourists
can learn a lot about the countrys religion, buddhism from visiting this temples.

Also, housed inside Wat Traimit in Chinatown is the largest gold Buddha statue in the world.
The statue is 9.8 ft tall and weighs around 5.5 tons with an estimated value of 250 million dollars.28

Bangkok attracts tourists because of its locals, the city is known as the friendliest town in the
world, and because of its cuisine, locals, among other exotic food eat various types of insects.

The last attraction is represented by the luxury and the opulence of the city in the night time,
Bangkok is also famous for its parties and possibility to feel free and have fun, among the calm and
the quiet islands that are in the proximity of the city.
