EVALUATION

SOCIAL ACTION

for my food banks social action project. i managed to legally and

punctually submit my final product, though there was a slight delay in the
videos re upload after the feedback as we had to reshoot some scenes as
there were audio issue with the audio having overlapping speech or
disturbed audio with the mike turning off or not being on the whole time
and the crew realising too late which i should take full blame for as it was
my responsibility to make sure all the equipment is ready and fully
functional. As we emailed the copyright holders of any archive footage we
used, we didn't and probably shouldn't have any problems relating to this
matter but i must add that none go them replied and when it comes to our
filmed footage, we asked for permission to shoot before had as we
arranged a meeting for the interview thus capturing the work place as
well. our own filming went exceptionally well apart from the minor faulty
mike set back as we had prepared really well at the pre production stage
behaving the question ready with the general knowledge ones having
answered to make sure that the answers we are being given aren't false or
made up but also having a general idea of what they do to make sure to
ask the right questions i order to get the best answers in order to get the
necessary information through them which helps us work faster making
the shooting more time efficient giving us extra time to film b roll and
extra footage just incase things go south which they did with one of the
mikes not working but as we ha a multi camera set up during the
interviews, we managed to pick up the sound with one of the cameras
which helped us avoid re shoots with the interviewees. But even then, we
had to film more interviews in order to get the best mark possible which

1
we didn't realise which put us slightly behind schedule but we managed to
finish just about on time before the deadline.
personally, i was very pleased with our final product as it honestly
portrayed the food banks and brought the issue to the spotlight truthfully
as through the social action video, we managed to break stereotypes
around food banks or anything that might stop people from donating to
food banks as not only homeless people go to the food banks and people
who have houses and jobs might be in the need of them too as they might
not have enough of an income to pay the bills and feed themselves or
they might have health/mental issues stopping them from working or they
might even be on pension and might have a delayed payment causing
them to have insufficient funds. all this was clearly understood by the
people who watched the social action video as it is clear though the
responses i gathered of a survey that i did . through this question it is
clear that the audiences cared for the cause which is imperative in order
to get people to not just watch the video but to do something about it and
with the second question adding tot he extend of the impact the video
had on them, it made it clear that we were successful in going what we
were trying to do which was make people aware of the issue as well as
make them care for the cause which is clear through answers like it made
me aware of the issue and sympathy and wanting to help which
elucidate the fact that the social action video is effective and works well to
make people not just aware but to also sympathies with the cause and the
people who need and use food banks.

2
by asking the audience if the
content is effective, we gather if the
audience are understanding the issue
and the causes of the issues which
leads them to decide if the issue is
something they want to care about
and if this wasn't efeective that would
mean that i have failed to meet the
criteria of my social action video. but
that isn't the case as the audiences
declared the content to be effective and a big reason that the vide i
effective its because the content is relatable to the target audience which
is late teenagers to woking adults as they are the ones who are more
likely to help this cause and by having a younger age demographic, we
are positively influencing people which will directly affect the way food
banks are perceived in the community thus giving it a positive image
making it more likely to people to
dd the cause and try and to bring
an end to the issue.
apart from the content, the
way the product is presented is
very important as you need to
make the video attractive,

persuasive, factual but more

importantly entertaining which means

3
adding fancy editing always helps keep the audiences attention as by
making the video eye catchy it'd make the video pleasing to the eyes
apart from being informative and in the case if my social action video, i
tried to keep it simple, short and to
the point with a background score
appropriate to the issue thus having
a slightly sad background score
makes sense which is why it was
appreciated as you can see in the
answers above.

As the video has to be good from at least a aesthetic perspective as

mentioned earlier, we tried t make it as eye pleasing as possible but
because food banks
themselves aren't that nice
looking and have a quiet
depressing ora to them, i
decided to use archive footage
for my b roll shots of
landscapes and streets to show
that there are such issues even
in first world countries and that
hunger or starvation isn't only
an issue in third world
countries . as you can see
people appreciated most of the footage that includes shots of landscapes
which is understandable as they are very aesthetic shots trying to cover
the darkness of the UK with beautiful scenery.

4
it is imperative that the audiences undertone what we are trying to
convey which is the food banks and the need for donations as well as
other facts abut the food banks in red to raise awareness about them and
with the answers on the right it is
clear that i was successful in doing so
as everyone got the issue that we are
dealing with in the social action video.
thus making it clear that my group
have been successful in making an
effective social action video on our
chosen cause - food banks.

when it comes to individual

performance in my group i feel like
everyone in my group worked well on
their own when the work was distributed mutually as well as working
together on the pre production booklet or even whilst shooting. there was
an issue raised when one of the group
member s couldst attend the filming
as they lived too far away from the
location of the shooting and had no
way to get there but managed to do
some filming in his own time.
charlotte kelly came up with the
idea of food banks and did most of
the pre production booklet which was
immaculately done and worked as
one of the camera operators as well
as interviewer on the shooting day.
where as i was anchorage of getting
the interviews set up which meant i hd contact the local food banks for a
interview which was a bit of challenge as most of them didn't reply and
the ones that did reply, we had scheduling difficulties as they were asking

5
to film too close to the deadline which at the end was the case as we
ended up filming four days before the deadline as our initial interview was
cancelled due to them being busy; they weren't very specific with the
reasons of cancelation. also. helped charlotte with the production booklet
and did the improvements on it after the first feedback. whereas Kieran,
did a bit of the pre production booklet too as well as doing an interview
on the streets plus some amazing b roll footage, even if it was done after
the first edit of the social action video but it helped us have more
interviews to put in our social action videos. as a team i felt there was a
bit of communication difficulties as i felt not everybody communicated
enough which lead to some misunderstandings with people being
confused on their tasks and me having to explain it to them various times
and at times even sit next to them and verbally take them through the
task step by step. the group worked good enough for the task to be
completed but i felt there was a lack of enthusiasm and passion in the
team which i felt nobody had in my group and honestly wouldn't
recommend this group again as i get we
have different working styles making it
hard for us to have a collaborative effort as
most of the work was done separately in
the team.
similar to my social action video, the
preventing homelessness in reading project
utilises similar techniques to my project as both of us use first hand
interviews with people who have been exposed to the issue or people who
are involved in helping people with the issue in my case it being for banks.
more specifically, we both have a single interview which is very
informative filled with facts and figures as well as being the back bone of
the social action video as it not only works as a information bed but also
becomes the emotional back drop of the video. we both have voice overs
over b roll footage of relevant objects and locations. however the only
main difference is the fact that there is a presenter int the homelessness
video.

6
in
conclusion, i
feel that my
social action
project was a
success as i
managed to meet the specifications, make
an impactful social action video which helps bring about awareness on my
chosen issue which is food banks. the use of voiceover over the b roll
footage was used effectively in my opinion as it was informative and
emotionally engaging making the audience aware of the reality of the
situation as well as pulling on their heart strings. however, i feel the
unavailability of a big food bank around us gave us a disadvantage as by
having an interview in a proper food bank would have been more
impactful in the sense of showing the real scale of the productivity
required and availability to help the people in need and as mentioned
earlier, it is fit for purpose and gets the target audience as it makes the
audiences are of the issue and simultaneously makes them sympathise
with people who might be in need of food banks. also, it does this to the
intended audience which makes it more impactful in the nigger scheme of
things as they are the ones who will be donating an helping people who
use food banks. however, originally i intended to make the video with
more interviews and a complete coverage of a big food bank but because
of the unavailability of certain food banks and the lack of funds for travel
to further away food banks that wasn't possible.
