Activity: NUIG Maths Department
Date: 31/3/17
Describe in some detail the activity undertaken. We
were brought into NUIG for a look at the maths department
of the college. This included going to different lecturers
rooms and getting a brief description of what they cover in
their lectures. Some of the lecturers gave us problems to
solve while others just took us through the interesting parts
to their work. Overall, it was a good experience as I got a
better understanding of college life.
What did you enjoy most about the activity? The part
of the activity i enjoyed most was the fact that we got to
meet many different lecturers so we got a good idea of the
different work which they do.
What did you enjoy least about the activity? The part I
least enjoyed was that some of the speeches dragged on
and got quite boring.
What did you learn as a result of the activity? I learned
what it is like to be studying maths in NUIG from both the
lecturers side and the students.
How does it link with your TY studies? It links in with ty
as it gave us an insight to college life which is not too far
away.

future as if I am to study maths in NUIG I will already have
an idea of both the building and what to expect from
lectures.
What skills did you learn or develop? I learned about
different problems and data that can be worked out through
maths.

the Saint Vincent De Paul.

Activity: Disability Awareness
Date: 22/3/17
Describe in some detail the activity undertaken. In the
morning we were all given boxes which contained different
shapes and we had to push the shapes through the holes in
the box while blindfolded to experience what it is like to be
blind. We then did an activity where one student would try to
tell us a word through sign language and we had to guess
the word like as if we were deaf. We then went into the old
gym and we had races in wheelchairs and tried to do
wheelies while in the wheelchairs. In the evening we did a
quiz to guess what disabilities famous people had. This was
difficult as many of the people showed no signs of having a
disability.
What did you enjoy most about the activity? The part I
enjoyed most was having the races while in the wheelchairs
as it was good craic and became quite competitive.
What did you enjoy least about the activity? The part I
enjoyed least was guessing what disability different
celebrities had as it was very difficult.
What did you learn as a result of the activity? I learned
that there is a huge amount of different disabilities and it is
not always possible to tell whether or not somebody has a
disability.
How does it link in with your ty studies? it links in with
ty as it showed us all the different problems people face in
everyday life which is something we would not learn in a
normal class.
How will it help you in the future? I will be more aware
of the different forms of disabilities and we also learned how
to help somebody who needs helps getting down a stairs
who is in a wheelchair.
What skills did you learn or develop? I will now be more
comfortable if I have to help somebody in a wheelchair as I
will know exactly what to do.

went to the swimming pool for pe for 6 weeks. We were

Activity: Joe Long Individual Consultation
Date: 29/3/17
Describe in some detail the activity undertaken: Joe
Long gave every ty student the option of speaking with him
for 30 minutes about subject choices and what college
courses and jobs we want to apply for in the future. We were
all given a booklet to fill out which would give him an idea of
what we expect to get out of the consultation and then he
went through what options we have with our subject and
college course choices and what to pick according to the
career we want to pursue.
What did you enjoy most about the activity? What I
enjoyed most was the fact that I now know exactly what
options I have with the subjects, college courses, and
careers I am considering.
What did you enjoy least about the activity? I would
have liked to have a little more time to go through the
different options.
What did you learn as a result of the activity? I learned
many different details about the careers I am considering
after school like college courses, points and subjects needed
and what qualifications I will get out of the college course.

Activity: Eco Unesco
Date: No set date
Describe in some detail the activity undertaken: The
activity involved cleaning up an area as part of an activity
which many schools around the country partake in. As our
project we cleaned up the area around the old mill in Tuam.
This involved painting, sweeping, planting and a general
clean up of the area and river around the mill. In order to do
the project we went to local businesses looking for
donations. All the businesses were very generous and we got
all of the stuff we required.
What did you enjoy most about the activity? The part I
enjoyed most was partaking in the clean up as it was nice to
see progress being made and see that we were making a
difference in the area.

people would use the bins provided.

that in a few hours you can make a huge difference in the
condition of your community.
How does it link with your TY studies? It links in with ty
as this is a project that we probably would not have had time
for in an exam year.
How will it help you in the future? It will help in the
future as i will know the consequences of littering and that it
is not fair for somebody else to pick up after you and you
should take pride in your community.
What skills did you learn or develop? I learned how to
correctly word a letter when asking a business for a donation
so that you do not come across as ignorant and maximise
your chance of getting a donation.

Tuam Celtic.
Describe in some detail the activity undertaken: We
were given an idea of what drills to do in our first session
during pe and we partook in the drills ourselves. The second

Activity: Credit Union
Date: September 2016 - December 2016
Describe in some detail the activity undertaken:
Firstly, we visited the credit union to get an idea of what we
would be doing. We were then all interviewed individually in
order to determine which job would suit us best. I was a
teller. This job involved taking money people were lodging
and writing a slip stating who it was lodged by and how
much was lodged. My group ran the credit union at lunch on
Tuesdays for 3 weeks and it was then given to another
group.
What did you enjoy most about the activity? The part I
enjoyed most was the trip to the credit union as it was
interesting to see the different aspects of the job.
