    Acute laryngitis can develop on top of chronic laryngitis. This occurs when a new upper respiratory infection causes additional inflammation in a larynx already weakened by chronic laryngitis. Patients with this condition may experience more severe symptoms than acute laryngitis alone, including increased hoarseness, pain, and difficulty swallowing or breathing.
