Sharing Mary
The weeks leading up to Christmas are called ‘Advent’. The Latin
word Adventus refers to coming, the birth of Jesus. It will come as a
surprise to many Christians that the story of His birth is also told in the
Qur'an. In both books Mary is visited by a divine messenger, the
angel Gabriël

In Arabic Jesus is called 'Isa, or in full: ‘the Prophet 'Isa, Peace be

upon Him’ He also carries the title ‘Christ’, the anointed one.

In the Bible Jesus is born into a loving family, and adored

byshepherds.

In the Qur’an Mary gives birth alone, in the desert, under a palm tree.

When she returns home with her baby her family criticizes her
harshly, comparing her behavior to the piety of her deceased parents.
The baby Jesus speaks up for her.

Perhaps this Christmas we could relate both Christmas stories.  We

might share Mary.
According to the Qur’an Mary was probably the only girl to be
educated in the temple. In this view she was not so much a ‘lowly
maid’, as  the best educated women of her day. No wonder her son
knew so much about the Hebrew Scriptures! European painters such
as Fra Angelico started picturing Mary with a book in her lap, as
knowledge of Islam seeped through into the Dark Middelages. Mary
was reading when the angel Gabriël surprised her.
