ABSTRACT

Freedom Of Press India

Freedom of Press is an Article of Faith with us, sanctioned by our Constitution, validated
by four decades of freedom and indispensable to our future as a Nation.
- Former PM Rajiv Gandhi

India became a democratic nation in 1947. A Nation where free and fair expression of
ideas are as important as democracy itself. The primary medium through which this
objective can be achieved is PRESS as in todays scenario the democratic extent of a
country is judged by the amount of freedom which the press of that country exhibits.
Hence, Press plays an important role in democracy and is also refereed to as the fourth
pillar of democracy and it is also rightly said by Blackstone, Liberty of press is very
essential to the nature of free state but what is important is till what extent?

WHAT IS FREEDOM OF PRESS?

Freedom means without the supervision or control of anyone.Hence FREEDOM OF

PRESS refers to the freedom which is exercised by the press with out any restrictions
From the state or the Government or any statutory authority. it makes sure that it is the rule
of people of the country as a whole and not of any group or any individual as it provides
the subjective and comprehensive study of different aspects happening around the country
and always keeps a check over the politicians as then they are under the surveillance of
the people directly, it serves as the powerful antidote to any abuse of the power exercised
by the government.

Freedom of press is a fundamental right which comes under the Article 19 which talks
about Freedom of Speech. The provisions regarding the Freedom of Press are mentioned
in Article 19 (2) of the Indian Constitution but as any other fundamental right Freedom of
Press also comes with reasonable restrictions.

In my project which talks about Freedom of press in India i would like to research on
whether the reasonable restrictions about which i have mentioned above are really
reasonable or are they just to curb the proper functioning of the press and restrict them ?
or are they too lenient that press is able to exploit its freedom ? if yes then the way it is
been exploited i am going to talk about all these aspects.
